Guvernment Rumours

Hey folks:

In the past 2 days I have heard two separate rumours about the Guvernment complex and I am wondering if there is any truth to them.

The first is that Charlie is selling 20% of the complex and is looking for a buyer.

The second (and more troubling) is that he is selling the entire complex to someone who does not intend to keep it as a music venue (condos??).

Anyone know if either of these are true???

this city needs to get moving

I agree, but do you think by removing the cities biggest player that the scene will actually breath a new life?

Quite a few people were saying similar things on NYE (closing or closing and re-opening) and the chatter has actually influenced me to go there soon just in case.

Maybe that's the intention.

I'm surprised you're sticking up for the Guv considering it scooped you on PVD.

BTW, good NYE, I love that venue.

I believe that.
But I've also never been a fan of the Guv, so if it closed I wouldn't be disappointed to hear the same talent in other venues.

I doubt it's true (but 20% is nothing). I've always looked at it as a complete cash cow for Charles K and I doubt he would sell it now with the guvernment cd's on sale and stuff. If Charles K did sell it, I'm sure a new buyer would snap it up quickly and probably keep the guvernment/koolhaus complex as is. Until something like that happens, it is just rumors and I have no time for rumors because they normally start with one person making up shit to another and it catches the wind and keeps going.

this just keeps coming up....

once again i doubt its true

I've been hearing this rumour from a number of people for about a month now. I doubt there is any truth to it.

Hey Tara...

Missed ya at the Guv on NYE. Hope you and Matt had fun. When we hanging out?

Know anything about the Guv? Been hearing stuff from people who are usually more right than wrong.

XO
Chris

why would this club ever close? You can't tell me that the owner(s) aren't making an enormous profit.

I think it will... by removing the top player itll give another player(s) a chance to take its place... do things a little diff maybe...

I am not a big fan of the guv, in fact I dislike it very much, so it closing wouldn't bother me... However I would feel horrible if my fav club closed

Guv on a reg night? Meh.
Guv on a special event? AWESOME. (for the most part)
I go where the party is...

Still...the Guvernment is Toronto's biggest club...I mean in popularity, size and international recognition. It would be a major blow if it closed...where else could we cram thousands of people to see Tiesto, PvD, etc, etc? The Docks is ok. I've never been to Viva or System, but aren't they kinda small compared to the Guv?

I, for one, hope it stays open for a long time...they get the best guest Dj's for my tastes.

Posted by DigDeep on Jan-07-2004 05:41:

The only reason one complains of the Guv is the crowd.....its that simple. The regular Saturday night clientele can be scary at times, and they ram the place to the tits every major party. I think if the Guv controlled the capacity, hiked up the price on Spin Saturdays to $20 they'd still profit considerably and they'd have a happy crowd who couldnt find one thing wrong with the place. I could be wrong. But like Chris said above.....if you dont like The Guv, dont bitch about it, and even better.....dont go.

I like the Guv...A LOT. I just wish they would fix up the soundsystem in the mainroom...but other than that...I love it. I always have a good time when I'm there. I'd hate it if it closed down.

Posted by Tordan on Jan-07-2004 07:29:

I luv the guv, even on regular nights. When you're there with friends the regular night crowd isn't as scary. If guv does get turned into condos (doubt it) I'll be sad but I still got Boa, Systems and Viva. But if Mark Oliver decides he's had it with Toronto, takes off and I can't even catch him at Viva I'll be truly pissed!!

Posted by phoenixBEBE on Jan-07-2004 13:26:

seriously...the amt of ppl that go into this venue each nite...i would think that the owners are making a KILLING on the profits...and i luv the Guverment so i realli hope that even if the rumors are tru that the new owners will continue to keep it open.

it IS internationally known...im from eNyce ;-D

We will see something new happen. The guvernment has been grabbing DJs all the time. After it closes, maybe independent promoters will emerge, different clubs will enter the game - goodbye to the status quo!

What you're forgetting is that about half of the people that attend guvernment special events are its regular saturday crowd, people that just like hype and big events, and those reached by the more extensive advertising of the party (you don't see the promotion of regular spin saturdays much), etc.. so, as we've seen in the case of Picotto at System, it's not hard at all to move to other venues.
