the blue one is mine!!!!

Posted by Misty Kitty on Jan-07-2004 12:49:

although they look really nice, i'd rather get a less well known brand that works just as well and saves me the dollar.

Posted by sykadelik on Jan-07-2004 13:10:

They don't look that much smaller, plus for an extra 50 u can get like 3X the storage. I'd rather have me an Archos video AV340

Posted by dj_mdma on Jan-07-2004 13:18:

i wouldnt mind the archos thingy either, but doesn't it cost something like 600 quid?!

mini ipod all the way!!!!

gah i wish i hadn't bvought my Sony MP3 discman for 120 quid now!!!

Posted by Cru54d3r on Jan-07-2004 15:06:

Much nicer then the ipod .. no reports of dead irreplacable batteries .. 60GB HDD .. 4GB on a mini-ipod is hardly sufficient in my case

Posted by dstrukt on Jan-07-2004 15:11:

Personally i dont think that looks half as good as the I-pod, each to their own etc.

Im more than happy to give Apple my dosh these days, My Ti-book has done me proud and also jonothan Ives is the fucking daddy.

*Jonathon Ives = Designer of the I-pod

Posted by Rick D on Jan-07-2004 18:43:

rather spend it on the hundy, 200 quid could buy me a couple nice go faster toys

Posted by sykadelik on Jan-07-2004 19:59:

I wouldn't convert any of the US mini iPod prices to english and think thats wot there gonna sell for here if i was u. Apparently us uk'ers are gettin' rectally raided when it comes to the price of Apple products compared to the yanks:

Posted by magnasoma on Jan-07-2004 20:21:

The creative stable of products are ghastly, they're slow as fk unless you're fortunate enuff to be USB2'd up, as i don't think they have firewire ports and the interfaces suck baby rhinocerous's.

The Archos AV340 is actually pretty nice as a portable dvd, we had one in the office for a month or so and the playback quality is really good, but i wouldn't want to use it as a replacement for my iPod, its like a brick. It is smaller than that fucking obscene creative thing with blue battery covers on the ends tho.

The guy sat next to me on the train the other day was listening to his AV340 but i could tell he wanted to swap me tho, and the interface on that thing is utter cowdung, three little ghy0r buttons, it takes an age to do anything, and the ipod is still the only portable u can navigate and control with one hand, if that's important to you.

Its so cool infact that i can navigate and turn the vol up and down when its in my pocket and my hand isn't, coz the controls are heat sensitive like a laptop pad, altho people look at me funny sometimes coz it looks like i'm stroking my front area...

anyone have any reference links to information on these apple batteries dying?

Posted by magnasoma on Jan-07-2004 20:49:

there was a video about it. it was quite funny. but its not entirely true anyhow.

This:

http://www.ipodsdirtysecret.com/

It is very true, the magazine I work for did an article on the downfalls of the iPod and there were lots of people who foned in complaining about the batteries and their lack of warranty amongst other things. A few people I work with have had problems with them as well and have all reverted to the NetMD with its superior battery life.

Posted by magnasoma on Jan-07-2004 21:30:

aye but its not true you can't take em apart, wired or someone did an article on how to take them apart and put in replacement batteries from some third party reseller.

as long as it works for longer than my first crappy solid state mp3 player, with very hard to achieve (at the time) OEM 64Mb mmc cards cost me not far off double wot my iPod cost, i'll be happy.

theyre two batteries. the top one does the old models, and the second one does the new models. they are replaceable, as apple have a scheme which costs u $99 for them to replace ur battery, or u can do it urself at the cost of the battery, im sure this would void the warrenty tho. the apple battery isnt shit, its just the technology it uses, heres some bumf for people who wana read it:

Q: Is the iPod's battery user-replaceable?

A1: Yes and no. The iPod's case is not designed to be opened, so, in that respect, it's not what would generally be referred to as "user-replaceable". But, the case can be opened, and there are several third parties that offer replacement batteries for the iPod, such as iPodBattery.com (instructions, with pictures: original, non-"dockable" iPod, new, slim "dockable" iPod) and PDASmart, for as low as $49. Some will even do the replacement for you if you send it in.

Q: I heard that the iPod's battery only lasts 18 months, and then you have to buy a new iPod! Is that true?

A1: NO! The vast, vast majority of even the earliest iPods, now over two years old, continue to function just fine. Some iPods, however, have had issues with batteries. Lithium ion batteries are only good for 300 to 500 charge/discharge cycles (more). For this reason, certain customers' usage patterns may cause the batteries to degrade, or fail, sooner than others.

A2: If the battery does fail, and the iPod is no longer under its original one year warranty or $59 AppleCare Protection Plan for iPod, or any of numerous third party service plans, you don't have to buy a new iPod. You may replace the battery yourself for as little as $49, or have Apple perform the replacement for $99.

Q: Will the iPod's battery degrade over time?

A: Yes. Over time, the battery will not hold the same amount of charge as when it was new. This is natural, and is true of all lithium ion batteries. This slow degradation will not affect, or be noticed by, most users. However, based on usage, environmental factors, and many other variables, some heavy users may notice a greater degradation than others. It is important to understand that this is the exact same degradation that would occur with any lithium ion battery used in any laptop, cell phone, portable music player, etc., and is not unique to the iPod.

Q: Why didn't Apple use better batteries?

A: Apple uses the best lithium ion battery technology available from leading battery manufacturers. This is the best, most cost effective battery technology available given the requirements of the device. The lithium ion batteries that Apple uses are no different than the lithium ion batteries used by any other manufacturer, on products from portable music players, to laptops, to wireless phones. The battery should last most normal users the life of the product (several years).

Q: Is there any way to use an external battery pack, or standard AA batteries?

A: Yes. Belkin makes an external battery pack for the "dockable" iPod that takes 4 standard AA batteries.
