You feeling like you're minority?

Being addicted to trance while being Asian history major in an university where Asians take math, comp sci or engineering, sci fi geek and infanteer.

Hard to fit in with that sort of list attached to you.
Not that I mind, however, doesn't it get annoying sometimes that you're the only one in your group with super different interests?

Posted by TeKnoHe@d2025 on Jan-08-2004 08:42:

I'm white so no. But if you were to base the minority groups on what genre of music the people listen to in my area then I'd feel like a minority. Very few people I have met around here enjoy trance and EDM in general as much as I do.

You don't nesecarily have to hang out with asians though, do you?

I choose freinds on personality rather than race. I'm caucasion, and over 50% of my freinds are asian. Come to think of it, i've never really noticed that until now...

Posted by Yohan on Jan-08-2004 17:59:

LOL

I'm just saying I'm nothing typical. I don't fit into a 'stereotype.'

An Asian arts student in university where Asians go to for engineering, math and computer science.
A sci fi geek who is an infanteer (I mean, what kind of geek does that stuff?) so I'm not quite a geek.
An infanteer who likes trance. (they're all about rock and roll and maybe a little rap)

So my diversity in friends are quite large, for the same reason I never mix a group of them together since their tastes clash a lot.

*shrug*
What a strange world.

i'm chinese, i'm a history major with a minor in asian american studies. oh and i plan on becoming a teacher. hows that for a typical asian.

Posted by Floorfiller on Jan-08-2004 18:39:

i can see where you are coming from, not that i experience any kind of racial problems...well...perhaps im'm white and i like trance music...know i know on the big picture...especially europe...trance is probably just as full of white listeners, but in the us...i would have to say that the vast majority of people that like the genre are asian.

but i can definitely see what you are saying because at least in my expereince...asians are the clickiest group...i mean i have asian friends and stuff, but i don't think that you'll find any other ethnic group so focused on creating a mini cultural community within the large...

and before anyone thinks i'm a racist or something...my girlfriend is half asian

Posted by UWM on Jan-08-2004 18:43:

I might be stupid for not knowing, but what is an infanteer?

i dunno about asians being the clickiest group, i'd actually say blacks are the most clickiest group. At least in my uni, but that could be due to the small number of them in the general population at my school. The neighborhood that i came from was all asians and mexicans, but because of hostile relations between the two groups there wasn't much mixing going on.

btw i think by infanteer i think he's referring to be part of the infantry in the army?

Canadian term for infantryman. (or woman)

hispanics don't usually go to college
so i have to hang around with a diverse crowd.

my high school was pretty much latino.
out of all the kids that graduated with me
i only see very few in college. i guess most of the them
went to a community college or something.

Posted by niteshayde on Jan-09-2004 01:25:

i'm chinese...and most chinese kids listen to hiphop/rnb...but i really dun give a shit. i'd rather be a minority than be like them.

HAHA classic racist statement, i recommend not using the "im not racist my (whatever) is (whatever) phrase"

i'm chinese, but either way here in australia hardly anybody likes trance...so it really makes no difference, i just find other interests to associate with people

you do know that 78% of florida is white folks right? thats higher than the avg of 75% for other states.

Posted by AnonymousRacer on Jan-09-2004 04:35:

I'm asian... listen to trance and other forms of edm. Most of my friends are white, my best bud is white, and I mostly talk to white girls(although I'm open to any girl as long as they are attractive, for some reason, I find talking to black girls the easiest), and the close asian friends I do have are pretty 'white washed'. Most of the asians I know are into electronic music, although some of them only know the really bad ones by really bad DJs like Mystic or Epic or whatever their names are.

Maybe the reason for all this is due to the small asian population exists in my city.

I am studying in a computer related field and drive a semi fixed up import(91 MR2 turbo)so I do fit in with some of the stereotypes. I can't picture myself ever owning an American car... only European or Japanese cars for me!

As for 'clickiest' group, I do agree blacks seem to fall into that category. I rarely see blacks associate with other races unless they are in a situation in which they have no choice. At work, at school, at the malls, they are always in their own little world.

I don't know why but I think asians are the most 'open' minority out there when it comes to friendships with people of all colors.

what a disgrace

well how do i feel like a minority?

think this: a 6'1 17 year old chinese kid, supports president bush, loves trance, cant play tennis or swim well but great at basketball and doesnt wear abercrombie.

what? i'm not racist...what i said might have followed a few stereotypes that i've experienced to have some validity...just as i can say...in my experience...white people like rock/rap...the only reason i threw that in is because on the internet if you don't...the next thread people start accusing you of being a racist...

Posted by b i n k u n on Jan-09-2004 06:34:

i'm asian, and i actually know my trance (unlike the many cracked out asian invasion at the nyc superclubs)...

i study music technology @ nyu, which has exactly 2 other asians in the whole program.

all my buddies that i grew up with are into chinese pop and hiphop...

i dun drink...that probably puts me in the minority in any situation.

that's about it i think.

Aye, we need a national campaign to rectify the situation.

I just tell people I'm a "Native American Jew."

You can't define me or put me into a box because I won't fit.

Oh, and in North America, there are perhaps no other people who have known worse oppression and hardship than those who were here before everyone else. For that reason, I'll be checking the "Native American" box on the next census.

Ok, So there are a few old jerry's running around the coast. I should have said South Florida. Then we would see a change in your numbers.
