Canadian Trance Scene
I have a couple questions... First off, is there a major dance music festival held in Canada? Second, is there a Canadian version of groovetickets.com or some kind of website that announces the best events in Canada? Thanks to anyone kind enough to let me know. I want to check out the scene in Canada and I don't know where to start looking, Vancouver would be closer for me to visit but I'm willing to travel to East Coast if there's something as alluring as Ultra.
Canada is so geographically vast that there's not really much of a point for such a thing. The scenes in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver are definitely the best in the country, and each have their own massive events now and then.
the event closest to Ultra is WEMF which happens each summer in the Toronto area.
and the closest youve got to groovetickets is here. Not to sound conceited, but TA knows more about events than any other source ive found.
in order of scenes in Canada, I dont think a entire trance scene is living. Tho electronic music as a whole is.
I would rate it as follows
1.Toronto
2.Montreal
3.Vancouver/Calgary
Quebec city gets the odd show, as does Ottawa. Edmonton gets one in a blue moon.
I havent heard of one in Victoria in a long time. And that about sums up Canadian cities. (Halifax might have a scene, but I hear nothing from that far east)
yeah, i'd agree with what j_spott said. most online sites don't have a lot of information, or when they do, its so hard to include everything, especially since most of the big sites are run and hosted on foreign soil.
Most of the major canadian events are posted in these forums, though some are left out as other groups have their own events, but most of those aren't typically that huge (aside from the NYE event that I think Twisted/F&K hosted with GTR, Pulser, etc..).
I try and post whatever i find from every source people direct me too on my site (www.bpm143.com) but often I am just plain lazy or plain dont have the time to keep updating it. I was trying to get some php going so people could add events on their own to a calender but the webspace i host it on doesn't support php (plus my uni. would rape me if i started going nuts).
Canada's trance scene is growing, but i dont want it too huge, the second the big corporations think they can pull in a huge profit they'll commercialize the hell out of everything and make it as uncool as possible in an effort to make $$$ by overplaying everything til our ears bleed.
*edit*
I updated the bpm143 site today to post a bunch of events in the vancouver area, if i missed any or any of the info is wrong or missing, let me know. thanks.
Thanks for the info guys. Is there a site for the WEMF? I think I might check that out this summer.
www.wemf.com i think
WEMF is by far the biggest and best party in Canada. It's also the biggest rave in North America. Unfortunately, I've got some bad news for you. I don't think WEMF is going to happen again. Last year was apparently the last year they were throwing the party. After the past 4 years or so, they've been getting less and less people, venue problems, governement issues. Don't get me wrong, it's not that they bring a lack of talent or anything. but keep your ears peeled, you never know when they might want to kick things back into action. WEMF usually happens in the end of July or so.
