| Al-Jazeera, a satellite news agency based in Qatar, is an unusually independent voice in the Arab world. It has been called “the Arab CNN.? It planned to launch an English version of its site by the end of March. But the network's Web site suffered denial-of-service attacks and hacking since it showed pictures of dead and captive U.S. soldiers in Iraq. Now, both the English and the Arabic versions of the site are down. But, they could come back at any time. |

yes there was mirrors, but the links weren't spread, if you knew a friend who got the address to one of them, you were lucky and kept it to yourself...
anyways, from seeing many reportages on al-jazeera (made by British, French and Canadian TV), I can tell you that the guys working over there are incredible and have journalism to the heart. They have nothing to do with Govt. controlled medias or private (and influenced) medias.
Al Jazeera is not only an Arabic phenomenon, their news cast are translated in many languages daily and broadcast around the world. (for example, a Japanese tv station rebroadcast 4h of Al Jazeera tv everyday). Translation is not done by Al Jazeera, but by host channels.
