Blackhole Recordings closes mp3 website

The page http://tptp.cjb.net/ where we could download (the first?) vinyl rip of Urban Train has recieved an email, threatening with legal actions if mp3 is not removed, from Blackhole Recordings. I was just corious, isn't Blackhole Tiesto's own label? The the following occured to me:

From the interview with DJ Tiesto, http://www.trance.nu/

"Question: What do you think of the about audioformat MP3?

I really like it, because specially in The States and also here in Sweden it's been good for my name because my CDs are hard to get here.

Question: What do you think when people download your songs illegaly. Is it bad because you loose royaltymoney.

Well, I'm not in there for the money. I'm really glad, actually honored, that people download my music. That's a compliment I think."

so it all made me quite confused... any ideas?

I remember reading an interview very much like that one...might be the same one...like a while ago, a year or so. So I dont know much about his comments regarding the recent Blackhole issues.

same here...I've got a few cd's by tsunami records and serious records and js by not downloadin them fitstly I would've had no idea about'em and in fact would've never bought anything they release.

Posted by reveal on Aug-01-2001 21:57:

if it wasn't for mp3, i would have never ever heard about Tiesto & company... and i would definately never have bought any blackhole records, which i have now

Posted by shr00mz on Aug-01-2001 22:15:

I dont think any of this is tiesto's fault..just the record label execs trying to further line their pockets. Their greed will only hurt future sells since not many people blindly buy things they have never heard before

Posted by ejumbo on Aug-01-2001 22:21:

you have to remember that Black Hole is a small company. it's not a Universal or a BMG. They are cool with people spreading livesets, and that's all you need to get turned on to a dj. it's not about greed. these guys need this money to keep the company running and growing.

we had a thread like this a few weeks ago.
and someone said that the reason blackhole has started acting like assholes is because it was actually bought from tiesto recently.

i don't remember the name of the guy. i also don't know if it was true or not. but this very well could explain things.

i don't think tiesto, who gets paid very well for live sets, would personally care about mp3s being up.

trance.nu has an interview with DJ Tiesto clearly expressing that he has no problem with distribution of his music (in mp3 format) circulating the net. It looks like Tiesto no longer has control over his own music and his label doesn't give a sh=t about what he has to say, as long as he is filling their back pockets with $$$$$$$$$4

Food for thought

DJ Tiesto was a few weeks ago the owner of BHR.( he may still be the owner)
however it is possible he has sold the control of the company.

If he had sold BHR outright i dont belive he would also have sold the copyrights of his material with the company
as BHR still own copyrights to Tiesto material i would guess that he still has a share of the company, but not a controling share.
Now that the money men have control the policy on MP3 has been brought in.

if this is the case then Tiesto himself would be blameless and not a hypocrite for going against what he said about liking MP3.

this of course needs further research but as others and i have said in the other BHR threads
with out MP3 a lot of ppl would not have bought BHR vinyls and CD's.

Exclamation

Thats's wot i mean, BHR, can kiss my arse, theve made a fortune of me, and without MP3, they would be bankrupt, the same goes for Tsunami which i love, but how else are u gonna ditribute the godsend that is TRANCE, tell people its good. Bollocks. There scared of the bootlegers who are burning Vinyl from MP3's which is harming their profits. Try then buy, that's my motto!!!

well, isn't it obvious? it's the talent-pimpin' label that doesn't want mp3s.

bah black hole is being selfish..i get wat u mean by them being a smal company and all and i understand that the peeps who leech and dont buy shit from them is the reason why there being like that..but what about peeps like me who dj and shit...i liuke to here the whole song a few times then buy it. if only i lived near a goddamn record store i wouldnt have a problem lol

also if it wasnt for mp3s i wouldnt be a tranceaddict cuz i never heard of trance into the internet and mp3s...so i think mp3s are good for the business it attracted lots of people like me to get into dj'in and buying there records.

well just my 2 cents

Posted by TeKnoHe@d2025 on Aug-02-2001 03:17:

Their latest target was http://trancelover.x1.nl/ They ordered 'Urban Train' to be removed from the site...good thing most of us have it

Posted by dazzed on Aug-02-2001 06:33:

yah man i must say.

before napster and mp3's. i bought the occasional cd. making sure i sampled it from a friend and liked the music.

after napster.
i dropped 2 grand on tables and a mixer, and bought close to 150 records now. mp3's allow me to figure out the music i like. and order it!!! friggin idiots. they should put low quality mp3's on their sites. low enuff that if someone ripped it and tried to play it they would sound bad. but put the mp3 up so that everyone can hear the song and decide if they liek it. even the online sites that have mp3's availabe to sample for 2min. i've heard songs that have a good climax and decient beginning. but the rest sucks, so whos to judge a 10min track in 2 min

Question

Why don't we send'em an e-mail explainin all this and see how they react about the fact that mp3's are actually the way to advertise music
Any ideas?

Strange

I think you'll find this is the first noticeable step by electronic record companies putting a foot down on mp3 sharing...

Right now, it spreads the word of the music, definitely making these guys MORE money than they be making without the help of the tune being out and available to people all over the world.

Unfortunately for record comps, it's getting cheaper and cheaper to get vinyl pressed. Hell, if I have a clean rip on a CD, I can get an acetate for like 25-30 bucks. I can get killer tunes in my sets, without waiting for them to come out. However, if I choose to get a commercially available song pressed, I will always purchase it at a later date. Gotta respect the artists.

As more and more technology becomes available to more people though, the quality of music will be raised, and alot of these new artists will have their music available for free. So, companies like Black hole will have to get with the program, or suffer the consequences.

Posted by reveal on Aug-02-2001 13:47:

hmm, i don't think ppl pressing their own vinyls is a big problem... actually i have never heard of it, i might be wrong though...

Posted by torontotrance on Aug-02-2001 13:58:

Talking

I guess it is Black Hole Records right to control their products. Whether you like mp3's or not, It is there legal right to control websites from using their products. Tiesto likes mp3's but he either sold control of the company b)too bloody busy with deejaying to care or c)both. I know we don't like it but that is life. Anyways most of us have it anyways.

Posted by dazzed on Aug-02-2001 17:25:

yah black hole is a good name for the record label.

cuz records are black. have a small hole in the middle. and suck in ur time and money. but seriously....

yah i think with all the new cd-dj stuff, and the ease of burning a cd. they are probably very worried about people making their own cds. i doubt they are worried about people pressing their own vinyll.

i bet companies hate cds and cd dj stuff. cuz i mean who would go spend like 25-30bucks to press a record when u can buy it for 10bucks. but in the meantime you can buy a 100$ cd burner, a 30cent cd, and steal from the company.

I found this in an interview

Q: You are so diplomatic, are you sure you are not Swiss (laughs)? Let's see how you answer this one: how do you feel about Napster?

Napster is great so long as they put out tracks on there that have been officially released. I don't really mind people downloading my music; I also see it as a compliment. And if you are a real music lover, you want to have the original CD anyway 'cause then you feel more connected to the artist.

Taken from http://www.askmen.com/toys/intervie..._interview.html

So once Urban Train is officially released Blackhole won't mind.
