Have my turntables a year now. I have been practising alot. And in a few weeks I normally should do my first set. And, I'm nervous

2 weeks. I had my gear two weeks, and then I was asked to spin a 300 man or so gig. Obviously I crapped my pants. Lucky for me the dj before me was utter garbage (just an example, cd starts skipping, instead of switching over to something else, he just presses stop, and starts the tune again...). Didn't do a too bad job...

Posted by Tiger777 on Jan-22-2004 21:10:

rofl, funny

I hope the dj before me will suck too...

fuuuk 2 weeks wow... did u know how to beatmatch n all that?

Posted by T:REBEL on Jan-22-2004 21:53:

When I went vinyl, it took me close to six months before performing live due to the fact that I was on a budget which killed me, 'cuz of my limited record collection.

Yeah, took me almost a whole record to manage it though. So it was pretty much intro/outro mixing.

Played my first live illeagal warehouse gig in London in winter 1987, infront of 1000 people. Had only been playing dance music for 1 month but I had started DJing in 86 so had a lot of turntablist skills to fall back on.
But the brown trousers were deffinately in the house if you know what I mean.

Thankfully in them days nobody new anything about beatmatching anyways. The vibe was awesome though. And E's were good back then (so I'm told cough cough...)

Cheers
Nem

hey, how do you guys go about getting gigs? i mean, i've only been spining for like 3 weeks but i've already recorded some sets. just wondering what path i should take later on down the line

I got my tables three days ago and I did my first liveset for like 10 of my friends last night and I did pretty well!

It's funny... I was DJ'ing with PSS DJ on my PC for a year and
the skills that I gained from it really, really helped me out
with beatmatching vinyl. I feel like in a month I will be
able to handle a club gig skill-wise... pressure-wise though
I don't know

God damnit - I was still running around in dipers at that time of being.

---

My firs live performance took place about six months after the purchase of my 2x Pioneer CDJ-500S' (October '02)

Got a pair of 1210's this week - we'll see how long it will take before I feel enough comfortable to do my firs live TT-performance

after i got my tables my 1st live performance was 6 months later. i didn't know anything about spinning when i bought my setup, i basically spent alot of time in my room practicing. i was nervous as hell but i did fine, and i still get nervous at the beginning of my sets i don't think that will ever go away.

Posted by Ghostface on Jan-28-2004 00:17:

about 7 months for my first paid club gig. About 5 months for my first set in public.

i got my turntables back in august, and spun my first party on new years eve. it wasnt payed or anyting, i just brought my decks out and spun for like 10 friends. it was fun. still nerve racking, but hopefully i will spin alot of small partys before my first "real" gig.

well I got my tables at the beginning of last school year and I didn't try getting a gig until school was over last summer. So I had been half ass practicing for about 8 months. Then I played for a few friends, like 50 er so. then I played at a few bars n stuff. nothing too massive.

Its just whenever you feel you have some music that people want to hear you should go out and get a gig.

now that I moved I cannot rely on my old dj buddies to work me in a gig. So what I did was try to find promoters at clubs and talk to as many djs as possible. I found a night that showcases pretty much every dj in the area, I hung out, dropped a few demos and I got to play.

thats how you can work from the bottom.....get to know the promoters.

My buddy and I got our hands on a pair or turntables during mid summer and we have been mixing fairly consistently. Got lucky enough to get a fairly good gig coming up at the end of February. Needless to say, Im scared shitless. Im hoping to be able to spin for a small party or something before the big one comes up. Seeing that some of you have gotten gigs in about the same amount of time or less makes me feel a lot better. Anyways, untill then Im going to be practicing like crazy.

1 year after I got my dex I played @ a NYE party by Sydney's only Melodic Trance party/group. Not a bad start.

Shat my pants, screwed a few, but nailed more

Time between the start and my first bar gig was probably a year. After that, i played some times in smaller bars and finally had the chance, after 1,5 years of practicing, to play for a crowd of 600 people.

2-3 hours. My mate invited a load of our friends back to my place without telling me to listen. It was my best gig ever!!!! *ahem*
