Question Beatmatching without pitch control?!

My friend and I are having a little dispute over beatmatching. He thinks that you don't need to use the pitch control at all to beatmatch and I think that's crazy. I mean, sure you won't need it if 2 songs are exactly the same pitch, but he never uses it to beatmatch. I thought that was the point of the pitch control. I haven't listened to him much but from what I did hear it sounds ok, so whats the deal?

beatmatching means that the beats are matched... therefore you need pitch control to match up the beats...
all your friend is doing is cutting or fading, whatever term you want to use... when done properly, it can sound like beatmatching to a degree, but essentially, it's just a longer fade

anyone else want to add to this, or correct me?

naww..but ill back u on it

well, I know that Jeff Mills often doesn't use the pitch control, but does it manually instead (by pushing and slowing the record down). BUT, this is only possible if (a) the records you use are all only 2 bpm off (like between 134 and 136) and (b) you are a Techno DJ god who has done this all his life.

Shame / Disagreement

The argument is redundant, if he's not using pitch control, he's not beat matching, he's sneaking in the bass line, or mixing during the calm before the storm. Novice style* You have to keep the beat even if they bass lines aren't matched up otherwise the rhythm is all fucked up.

Even if you are a techno god and your using the plate to slow down or speed up the pitch, you are still using pitch control. This dj friend of yours sounds like a real winner, tell him to keep up work and he'll be spinning backstreet boys in no time. =)))

I don't mean to be bitter I just hate morons who tell everyone "ya I spin man, yo I am the best, pitch control is for pussies", and they no shit. People like that should stick to playing video games (no offense to the gamers out there lol). Wow I am bitter today haha must be the fact that I have another 8 hours of work to go. ciao ciao

Jonathan

well, but he wouldn't need a pitch control like there is on the technics...dj cheesy was talking about "THE pitch control", not about changing the pitch in other ways. I was trying to say that beatmatching IS possible without using that pitch slide...

It's possible, I believe that Jeff Mills could, he da man.

Basically, your friend is a moron.

Jester

sure you can do it ........... for beatless AMBIENT
just joking of course...
but serioulsy i cant see anyone holding a mix for over 30vsecs without beatmatching

Posted by itsamemario on Aug-03-2001 18:53:

it IS possible to beat match without touching the pitch control....
if two songs are in different bpm, they WILL ALWAYS have at least 6-9 kicks (almost) at the same time (in a row that is)... i have tried it, and it works... it wont be beatiful, and you have 2 be quik on the x fader (or whatever u use, its up 2 u), or else it gets fucked up....

Posted by Fyx on Aug-03-2001 20:06:

Beat some sense into the guy Cheesy. If anybody tries to convince you to not use the pitch fader they ARE crazy!

Perhaps there is just some miscommunication going on here and he really is using the pitch fader. Maybe he's thinking of manipulating record by hand to phase it AND using pitch fader to match speeds vs. exclusive use of the pitch fader for phase and speed(which is kind of tricky)??

Smiley DJ

It can be done......but i dont think its very wise.......besides when you let go of the vinyl and it speeds up or slows down a lot.......its gonna sound terrible

Guys, I think there is a serious mis-communication goin' on here.
you cannot make two tunes with different bpms run at the same speed without ajusting the pitch control. period.
You might get lucky in maybe one out of 10 or 20 mixes that you do, because what you allready have the pitch set to just happens to match (coincidence). If you don't use the pitch control you are not going to be able to mix for more than about ten seconds before beats start galloping. You may be able to scratch in tunes (quickly from one to another) or mix on breakdowns or ambient parts without bothering to beat match and you will get away with it, but anyone who says "i can mix (and not just for 10 secs) without using the pitch slider" is just full of shit.
There is however, a way of mixing where you only touch the pitch slider once. While mixing listen to the tempo of the tune playing and then listen to the tune you are cuing up for the mix. If you get good enough at estimting the speed you can get to the point where you set the slider before the mix. Then just bring in the tune when you need and if you are this good, then you won't need to touch it during the mix. This does need a very good ear, good knowledge of the tunes and a lot of practise.
This can be done on the fly too: While one is playing, drop in the tune you want to mix while holding the pitch slider, and again if your good enough, before the records have a chance to go "out", slide the fader in a smooth and controlled manor to the correct speed.

First of all, my friend isn't a moron, he knows more than me, he's been doing this stuff for more than a year and I'm just starting. Anyway, I'll try to beat (no pun intended) some sense into him.

I thought of an analogy when I was sitting at a red light today...most cars have different rates at which thier turn-signals flash, just like most songs have different BPMs. If you're watching a bunch of cars with their turn signals on you'll notice that they don't flash at the same rate, but once in awhile they will flash at the same time, but not for very long. It's the same thing with songs and their beats.

Posted by Johnny Eckhardt on Aug-04-2001 04:47:

DJ RANN's right. If you want to beatmatch two songs of different BPMs, you're gonna have to use the pitch control.
Why you're friend seems to sound ok might be because a great deal of trance seems to be either a solid 137 or a solid 140 BPMs. More than likely he's just just mixin stuff that happens to be the same BPM. Also, how are his mixes? Are they quick or does he do a lot of long overrides? Something tells me that they are probably pretty quick.

Well, essentially what you need to do, is get a nice British girl to have sex with you while you're working on the decks and magically the two choons will match up perfectly, like an orgasm. <>

Halo, my signature doesnt work anymore, HELP!

Posted by DJ Cheesy on Aug-04-2001 07:48:

Haha, I'll give everyone a hint who the "moron" is, his name starts with a "p" ends with an "a" and has "ositiv" in the middle.
