omg that was a new to me, doesn't surprice me a lot though

something need to be done about him...

I've been bitching all along about North Korea but it is usually never mentioned on this forum, just one of those places that the world has forgotten. Kofi Annan spoke about genocides the other day in Sweden and yet places like North Korea are exterminating its own citizens in a systematic manner, sounds like genocide to me or are the lives of North Koreans worth ignoring because of a thug with alleged nukes. Its stuff like this that makes my blood boil, where is HRW, Amnesty International and the whole gang of them or do they find North Korea a hopeless case.

Angry

Holy shit I had no idea. Damn I wish I would have seen that report.

Posted by Yoepus on Feb-03-2004 15:32:

How about if Israel goes after NK, I mean after all we did Iraq for you guys

Posted by borron on Feb-03-2004 15:39:

Yes this is horrible... But how to stop it?

Going into war with North Korea is too big of a problem. First of all, NK has a large, well trained, well maintained army (probably the only thing well maintained in that country - apart from Kim Jong-il palaces).
They certantly have a stock of chemical and biological weapons they wouldn't be afraid to use. They even MAYBE have nuclear capability, although this is highly unlikely, but if they have, they wouldn't have any problem using it.

They have an excellent defense all through their territory, with lots of military bases, missile defenses, AA capability... and they have missiles pointed at pretty much all their neighbours, and capable of hitting them all without any kind of problems.

I think a war in NK would cause war to spread to all it's neighbours and a humanitarian catastrophe comparable only to WW2. And South Korea would turn into hell on earth.

Ive seen documentarys on North Korea, and the disgusting and horrific treatment of its citizens. I wanted to almost cry when i sawy a group of kids picking crumbs off a muddy floor as their rib cages were exposed. Stories from gaurds themselves about how hellacious it was seeing rotting corpses, even of pregnant woman, exposed in the court yards of detention centers for all to see and smell.

There is so much evil in that nation that one cant imagine. People join the military so they can have food to eat. Thats why they have a large army.

I wouldn't worry too much ... I mean the UN will handle it right?

Posted by Yohan on Feb-03-2004 17:00:

Hah. That's a good sarcasm.

I think military option to take out Kim is out, simply because SK which has one of the biggest economy in the world will go if a war breaks out. (and the rest of the world's economy with it)

Posted by Izzy on Feb-03-2004 17:24:

rizen, cyrus, you guys are pathetic. cant you just focus on NK and you reactions to the report instead of saying "oh well what about israel... we should attack israel". you guys are like little kids being caught for stealing a cookie and blaming your brother because he does it too. so freaking what. if you want to blame your brother have at it somewhere else. I too can come up with a list of countries saying, well what about them... so and so is doing the same. i dont cause the focus here is on NK.

anyways sorry for my temper. what NK is doing is horrid. i hope that some country out there can unite the world to take a tougher stand agianst NK.

You know, I think attacking North Korea right now is exactly as if we were attacking Iraq in 1991.

Iraq had the worlds 4th largest army AND it was battle-hardened after 10 years of intense war with its neighbors, it HAD weapons of mass destruction, it HAD long range artillery that threatened prospering economies of the region (including Israel, Saudia, and the Gulf nations), and it was suspected of having at least a few nuclear devices and using them, and it was killing its people too.

I don't care if you guys think North Korea has a strong army, of if you think it has WMD, or if you think it has nukes, or if you think it threatens the prospering economies of Japan and North Korea, we've been through this before. There is simply no way a tyrannical oppressed technologically retrated nation's army can stand up against the forces of the 1st world.

I would love to see a combined assault by the forces of the US, Japan, Korea, maybe even Taiwan, and hopefully Chinese forces at least guarding their border.

This coalition would rival the one under the 1st Gulf War, and you know what... I'm sure the outcome would be similar.

Thinking this is impossible and that a military solution is out of the question is resigning this world to doom. Its been done once before, it can be done again - the world has to wake up.

I blame europe

look, what u say makes sense....
BUT!
all those points are actually kinda similar to the ones raised back in 1935+ in Europe\US when Hitler was in Power. Today everybody understand that the world reacted too damn late. 6,000,000 TOO LATE!!!

and rizen, i also think israel HAS to participate in this campaign if it will ever take place. The world realy has to wake up, because UN\EU are sleaping, trying to push aside all things that disturb their self-destructive dream.

You neglected how fortified the 38th parallel is and how most of Korea is hilly and mountainous, so tanks can't maneuver well.

Oh, and the fact that Seoul is within NK artillery range.

Was the road to Baghdad no less fortified?

Did Kuwait not fall in artilery range? Was Saudia Arabia not bombarded with scuds?

I had a few doubts about Iraq this time through, but I still think it will turn out to be the right thing to do. That said, I would be far more willing to go to war in North Korea.

I think NK should have been taken care of before Iraq, because they are just as bad as Iraq on human rights, and they are much more of an "imminent threat" than Iraq ever was.

I would have to disagree with whoever it was that said "the UN will handle it." The UN is racked by bureaucracy and indecisiveness, and how much credibility can an organization have when the Human Rights Commission is chaired by Libya? The policy of the US and the many countries that went into Iraq with us is one that makes the UN more and more irrelevant. Bush even said it in the SOTU "America will never seek a permission slip..."

As to the strategic problems with going into NK, specifically with regard to the nukes and the artillery pointed at Seoul. The sooner the nukes are taken out the better, in any case. The nukes and the artillery would both have to go at the same time. This isn't as hard as it sounds. With a coordinated strike of cruise missiles and as many bombers as can be found, any nuclear missile sites and most of the artillery could be gone before Kim Jong Il gets off the crapper.
