Posting unfinished tunes...

Right, this is an issue that's been bugging me for some time.

Why does the amount of people posting unfinished tracks keep increasing all the time? As this is a place to promote your stuff I can't really understand how an unfinished, unmastered and sometimes even completely unfocused track would promote anyone.

Posting clips of finished tracks is one thing since sometimes one has no choice (for contractual reasons etc.) but I myself have better things to do than waste time downloading stuff only to find out it's a 30-sec clip that lacks the bassline and the lead because "I'm still working on it".

If you want pointers put the clip in the Production Studio, not here.

I'd agree with you for tracks that are obviously not nearly complete enough to be bothered posting, but in the case where a track is more or less finished but say lacking a few bits and pieces, I think it's alright to post it in order to get advice from people as to how you might want to go about finishing the track. But yeah I guess if it's just "hey listen to these few sounds I threw together that I plan on building a track around" then I suppose it's wasting peoples' time.

I guess you're right when you say it should be posted in the Production Studio forum instead though, but in my experience people usually don't bother reviewing stuff in that forum.

I don't really see the problem.
Most of the time people will say in their post that it is only a clip. So if you can't be bothered listening to clips then don't download it
Although I do sorta see your point tho.
What really bugs me tho is when people post all or a sizable chunk of their productions and say 'here are my productions, please comment' (yeah like I'm gonna download all 20+ tunes )

Posted by Floorfiller on Feb-03-2004 21:50:

you got a good point there mystery....hence i never post any tracks in here...i don't want to waste people's time hehehe...

Posted by Icone on Feb-04-2004 13:39:

Yeah, I see your point there mate. I myself post unfinished tracks only very very rarely. Unless a certain label would want me to edit a track before release, that way every track I post here is 'unfinished', even the clips.

When someone posts up a clip of a track that's not done however, and keeps updarting and updating, posting and posting, I kinda lose interest. I don't like it when I already would have version 30 of the same track, only with different clap, bass or any other minor thing every time over.

Then again the question remains whether the 'Production Studio' forum can be bothered with all those unfinished tracks?

yeah.. hate that... mostly end up with me closing the thread and don't listen to any of them...

unless the thread get's some posts about a track that is good.. then i might download just that track among the 100 other's.. hehe

but i don't like unfinished track's either... but a clip of a track is fine.. especially since not everyone can post the full track becaus of possibility of getting it signed

The worst thing is when a sample is posted, then maybe an 'unfinshed' version in a different thread, then the actual track in a different thread again.

By doing this, people are taking up thread space which should be showing someone else completed track. Hardly fair from what I can see...

Posted by dj dimwit on Feb-04-2004 14:08:

Why not make a special 'Snippet thread' for this? (If it doesnt exist already). On other forums this works really well, everyone should post his/her snippet in that thread.

Posted by DJ-Kreing^^ on Feb-04-2004 16:18:

I dont see any problem as long as you can tell by the title of the thread that what your about to download is only a clip.

Posted by Haak on Feb-04-2004 16:48:

hey, i'd be posting threads like twice a year here if i was only gonna post finished tunes hehe

Wouldn't that be twice as much as you do now?

I completely agree that this forum has become somewhat messy lately. Ideally it should be a place where amateur producers promote their finished, or at the very least near-finished tracks for the purpose of generating interest and feedback. It isn't such a big deal if an artist can only share a limited quality/length clip of a completed production, but he or she ought to be considerate and give the listener something to listen to. Otherwise, what's the point?

Back on track...regarding clips of unfinished material, if posting these in the Production Studio is not a satisfactory alternative to clogging up this forum, there should definitely be a stickied 'Snippets Thread' as previously suggested.

While I'm ranting, I'll bring up something that bugs me from time to time: thread titles. More specifically, ones along the lines of 'I'm great', 'check this out' and 'a new track' - if you want to promote yourself, put your alias and track name in the subject.

the reason i and i guess a lot of others post unfinished clips is because i have got so far with a remix or tune and have run out of ideas to finish it. and so i post in order to get some ideas to help me complete the track. is this not a good idea in ur view nik or wot?

Well I'm not the god here so I'm just airing my personal preference but IMO those kind of things would be better off in the Production Studio since that's what it's all about and there's usually someone willing to help there.

Wink

Another reason why I don't post my tunes here. I don't wanna waste people's time with previews, that aren't done. Good point again Mystery. Your on a roll.

P.S. Loved that thread in Music Discussion. Too bad it got closed. Two words. Mission Accomplished.

I agree and disagree, sometimes i think it's fine when people post unfinished samples when they truly need help on improvement, cause most of us aren't at the point of professionalism yet or to a point where we can make a decision on what should be done on the track. Sometimes we need help so we seek advice on what should be done.

i would be never posting at all

i see your point nik, but who tells the difference between a clip from finished track and an unfinished track. for instance my clips are often bits from the intro and the break, just because i dont have anything more yet..tho i do consider those parts (nearly) finished. and i always say it's just a clip

but i find those kick+melody clips with a thread title like: this is the best melody ever rather annoying too.

It would be nice to have a subtopic in the DJing / Production / Promotion section for unfinished tracks, much like other producing forums have. Sometimes it's nice to just throw out a melody or percussion line to see how people feel about it, especially if its kind of out there and you'd like some feedback before you work on a track that would ultimately be a stinker. Besides, I think many like to hear a tune progress, just so they can see how others do it, and maybe use it to help them in their production process.

Posted by Zwonimir on Feb-05-2004 20:47:

I think this thread si useful... and a subforum for unfinished tracks could be a good idea...

...so I post my unfinished new track cause I don't see ways to progress it
