Lightbulb From vinyl to digital

I'm a diehard vinyl fanatic, but...
Since we're in the days of Final Scratch and other similar technologies, is there a chance that Record Labels will make available uncompressed, "pay-per-download" tracks available for download on their sites?

I mean, if I switch from vinyl to Final Scratch, I'd want there to be an option out there to purchase high quality, uncompressed digital files that I could "lug" around in a laptop!

Do you guys see this happening anytime soon???

It's happening already, a whole bunch of sites have offered their entire vinyl back catelogues for mp3 downloads and more are on the way. The quality, I know they are good (192 Min) just not sure what you mean by great but most companies have samples of their works on their sites and have their back catelogues available somewhere. More of them are jumping on board because of iTunes and the success that Distinctive has had with their option to buy mp3's and a number of other record labels. That's the future I believe...

Right on.

I know that some labels put up mp3's. I was talking more along the lines of .aiff or .wav or something -- files around 70-80 MB. I think it's great the labels are following suit with sites such as iTunes.

If the market wants the big files for sale then you will see it. More labels are jumping into the compressed mp3's ring and you will see more and more and more in the following months. I think it's great because while I rather have the vinyl release of something, some stuff is so friggin rare that only the real collectors have them and giving the oppt to buy it on mp3 and hear it is great. I still rather have the vinyl but vinyl wears out and mp3 does not.

Good points.

My rationale is that having the uncompressed files would make it more suitable for clubs and such. I would stick with vinyl for its quality, but if labels offered excellent quality files, then I'd probably buy those, just for the reason you gave... the audio file wouldn't wear out like the vinyl would.

Yoshitoshi is offering their whole sweet prog catalouge for d/l...but they are all mp3's @ 160kbps
which is fucking rediculous...no professional DJ in their right mind would try to play such a low quality mp3 at a club.

I was thinking some similar to this, If I wanted to buy music online, they should be it as high quality as possible. There are lossless codecs out there that reduce the file size considerable (80mb down to 40%) while retaining the quality. Essentially it compresses the data rather then destroying (like most lossy formats such as mp3, AAC, Ogg, etc.). The only problem is for the hardware/softare to suppport the lossless codecs.

Thumbs up

I think it is definitly time for this !! We wouldn't have to pay for shipping on vinyls ! yeha. We would get the trax instantly, instead of waiting for them in the snail mail. Using vinyls seems out-dated.

Label's would save tons, too.

No vinyl

No pressing

No labor, really

No shipping

Saves time!

The customer pays for the shipping.. But youre right though..

I would only buy a mp3 if its at 320 kb/s encoded or a wav file.. Most people will think why should I pay for something when I can exact the same with sometimes even better soundquality..

The only reason is because its legal but 99% of all people dont give a shit about this..

An interesting question would be what if the police 'visits' you and you tell them I actually paid for my mp3s.. How can you differentiate a legal mp3 between a illegal mp3?!

I guess thats impossible

Posted by Izra on Feb-04-2004 17:59:

That is so true T_2199 !! How can the "MP3 police" tell if a file is purchased or illegally downloaded?? hmmm now you've got me thinking......

Going back to the digital vs vinyl topic, final scratch is the way to go. That way DJ's would have all of thier vinyls with them, all on a laptop. They wouldn't have to lug around all that plastic !

Was this thread really necessary? We just had essentially the same kind of thread started yesterday (again): http://www.tranceaddict.com/forums/...threadid=158535

i think that at some point labels will disapear and artists will just put the tracks for download at sites like that. but that'll only happen when people get rid of physical formats, and that's gonna be in a loooooooooooooooong time
