Hello! MP3 sharing *without* AudioGalaxy/Napster

I d/l my trance MP3's from sites like this, that offer direct downloads. I don't have AudioGalaxy/Napster/... and don't want to install them because of spyware, and I don't like sites that force you to go through a whole lot of trouble to get the .MP3, like splitting and joining files and unzipping, renaming, banner-clicking, etc.

So I'm wondering: does anyone here have FTP's or MyPlay lockers where they share trance music? If so, could you let me d/l some of the stuff you have? Thanks.

Posted by slider on Aug-05-2001 15:38:

i to stayed away from Audio galaxy cause of the spyware stuff but i found that WinMx is a pretty decent program. I didnt read about it having any spyware so hopefully its safe. Its very similar to napster in layout.

a good search engine for Ftp's is www.oth.net Problem with it though is that u find sooo many great FTp sites with SOOO much stuff which there is no way i can ever get Access to because i dont have a cable and dont have my own superfast FTp server etc. But u do stumble onto Ftp sites with a decent range of stuff!

Hope i havent told u stuff u already know!!

Red face

slider, thanks for the reply, but unfortunately most of the links at oth.net are dead! In fact I haven't been able to find a single one that works.

And are you so sure that WinMX has no spyware? I believe every program like that transmits stuff...

its possible to disable the spyware in ag...

Posted by KaBouTeR_ToeT on Aug-05-2001 16:30:

there is a program to uninstall those spyware things http://download.cnet.com/downloads/...lst-7-1.6372708

The only problem with taking out AG's spyware (webhancer) is that AG will not work or in some cases lock your computer up when you start. I tried to take out webhancer and it crashed my computer.

I'm not sure what we can do, I can't go through life with out getting new tunes every week. So for now I'm stuck with "the man" knowing what porn site I visit. *I really do like the aniamls, never even looked at the girls*

no - uninstalling webhancer disables the satellite as well

here is a suggestion on how to disable the spyware:
install a good firewall like Zonealarm (it's free and
very good) and then disallow webhancer or timesink (or
whatever soyware u have on your pc) access to the net
when the firewall asks for permission - and no more
problems with the spyware cos it cannot access the net

dload the firewall here: www.zonelabs.com

Yeah DC not to bad, we need a dedicaded server though. That means you have to be connected at all times and have a fast ISP. Kinda hard to get once in a while. Who knows, that would be cool to have our own hub.

eugene if I could offer you anything just ask. I mainly have live sets, I stopped collecting singles because I now have about 100 CDs full of singles. awww!

You could always wait until shawdozone and djmixes come back in the fall. They were the best source of tune for me. I understand you fear of the man, but maybe you could use a strong firewall and block out some spywares. Good luck m8

Hey QuickStep, thanks a lot. By the way you're in Philly? I live in Baltimore MD

At the moment I'm looking for Angelic - Can't Keep Me Silent and any new melodic anthems. As for shadowzone and djmixes, first of all, there's no guarantee that someone won't crush their balls for good (these sites come and go -- and lots of them are vaporware), and secondly, they use some convoluted scheme to make sure nobody leeches their stuff - and as a result, getting the actual MP3's is a PAIN in the ass! You have to d/l some special deciphering program, or triple-unzip, or search for some passwords aarggh!!

By the way, I once downloaded such a program off some site, and it crashed my WHOLE system (with Windows 98). I had to re-format my computer. So from now on I'm avoiding these banner-filled sites with lots of popup windows, scrolling status bars (so that you can't see where the links point to), frames and all those fancy graphics.

just how fast would it have to be? i could set up my extra computer as a server on a 10mbit internet connection, but i don't know if that's fast enough. in a few month i will have access to a 100mbit connection

swedish student network rocks =)

Thanks Wicked Red, I'll definitely check it out!
One note, though: what if there's brand-new spyware that it doesn't recognize? It can't catch ALL of it...

In AG you have the option of installing that spyware or not !!!!! just click NO !

Really? I've uninstalled webhancer from my computer a couple weeks ago and I have no problems at all.

that cannot happen because each and every
program that wants access to the net has to pass the
firewall - and zonealarm gives u the choice to allow
or disallow access

so NO - there is no such thing as a new program that
can bypass the firewall and YES - it can catch all of it

As Wicked red said, a decent firewall like Zonealarm will ask u to set permissions for which applications accesses the internet.
any new program will activate the firewall and the wall will then ask u if u wish it to access the net
so using this will, As Red, said stop all naughty software accessing the internet as well as providing protection from Trojans and hackers.

Zonealarm puts your PC into Stealth mode making its IP invisable to snoopers
posting on a site like this will send your IP addy to the server cache cos thats how it takes your post.

just a note on Spyware.
just recently a new law has been passed making it ilegal for spyware to use "silent setup"
this is where a application would auto install a spyware application without your knowledge.
All software with spyware in now has to give u the option of wether u want to install the spyware.

AG has updated and now will offer u the choice of installing or not installing the spyware.

*Note* of course if u use old exe files to install software it will still have the silent setup in it.

Unhappy

Without sounding too naive can I ask how serious this spyware thing is?
I mean I've been using audiogalaxy for ages and didn't even know about any of this till now.

You're a perfect example of why these programs are so harmful, they hide this spyware and a lot of people are left in the dark.

Basically they install some files which, while you're on the web, transmit information to various companies about your computer configuration and maybe even personal/sensitive information. If you're not paranoid about this it may be nothing serious. On the other hand I don't want anybody to know what's stored on my computer and what my user settings are.

Spyware sends out information about you and the type of sites u visit to a central server.
it started off as a means for advertisers to work out where their targets surf the most so that they could then place their adverts and banners on those relavant sites.

But it has got a little more menaceing than that.
cos spyware can detect what sites u vist and what u download other ppl can also use it to detect say that u surf porn and what type of porn u look at
if u download MP3's and also return the site IP addys to this server.

at the end of the day Spyware is nasty shit and u dont want it on your system.

visit www.lavasoft.de for a application called
Ad-Aware
that will clean your system of spyware

Angry

Damn it!!!
And you know this kinda shit is not gonna stop there!

I'm quite aware of what's happening to people's privacy specially with hidden camera's and that kinda stuff which we all know is bound to get worse. This is just an example of what I didn't know.
Anyways
Thanks for the help pplz

okay. for u guys who thinks u cant remove the spyware.
heres a piece of good news..
i m using Audiogalaxy n i managed to disable the webhancer..

i've forgotten how i did it ..
but heres the basic steps i did to remove most unwanted software..

* DO IT AT YOUR OWN RISK !~!~!!~ *
-------------------------------------

uninstall webhancer from your computer , using control panel/install or unstall programs option
(hope you know what i am talking about)

go to run.. and run regedit
under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\webHancer
delete the entire folder.

under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

look for those folders like run, run- , runonce, runservices (anything that starts with the word "run")
check the contents inside each folder.
if u encounter a line that has "c:\program files\webhancer" or anything very close to it and contains the word webhancer, just delete it
(do not delete anything else course u might crash yr system)

after that double check your work by running msconfig in "run.." option(in the same column as your start button).
ok, under startup , check for anything webhancer related, uncheck the box n reboot.
and viola !~ done. spyware disabled.

if there is nothing related, its fine, it means u have done the first part correctly.
