Posted by Boomer187 on Feb-08-2004 03:58:

what are you gonna be using it for?

thats the most important question when buying a machine.

Posted by Turbonium on Feb-08-2004 04:16:

You could use an extra optical drive, and your video specs suck (if you have no AGP port available that really sucks no offense - but if you don't play games who cares I guess). Other than that it's good.

EDIT: I just realized you have an AGP card. I hope you investigated whether that board has an AGP slot. Assuming it does, then good. Though I think your card sucks overall, I woulda gotten a 9600Pro or something. But it ain't bad.

Re: is this a good comp setup?

OK it's obvious you've never "built" a computer before... So I'll give you my suggestions...

AMD athlon3200 xp processor -- Get a 2500+ "barton" and oc it to 3200+ It is almost guaranteed

512mb memory -- What type? DDR400?

120Gb seagate SATA HD -- go with western digital

integrated 3D graphics -- EVIL!!!!

nVidia GeForce 5600 256Mb AGP video card -- its either one or the other buddy -- also, this card is a bad choice -- sucks (get ati radeon 9700pro or above)

dvd - cd combo -- I would not bother with a combo,, get them separate
16-10-48 cd-rw -- Dude why not go for the best (52x32x52 is only $35)
17" sony flat panel monitor

www.newegg.com is your friend

Yea he didn't really specify did he. btw go with 9600Pro or up, not necessarily 9700 and up... This is a non-biased opinion btw. 9600Pro can hold it's own, and is DX9.0.

get a dual 2.0 Ghz G5 with 23 inch cinema display.

ehh i just had to hold up the mac end of things

I beleive the "Integrated 3d graphics" means hes getting an NForce mobo of some kind, meaning it has a geforce 2 onboard, which isn't too spectacular (but acceptable as a backup).

I very very very strongly reccomend the Asus A7N8X Deluxe mobo. Its fan-fucking-tastic.

Make sure you get DDR Ram, not SD-Ram which is circa 2000 and sucks balls. If you want some serious speed I reccomend Corsair XMS ram.

If you don't get an Nforce mobo that has its own onboard network, for the love of god get a name brand network card. Nothing will hose your computer faster than a cheap network card, which causes 95% of all IRQ bluescreens. I reccomend Linksys or IBM. Of course, if you get the a7n8x deluxe mobo like I reccomend, you'll have onboard network anyways.

Also I don't reccomend an LCD monitor if you want to do any decent gaming. Unless your going to pay $1000 or more for one, they simply cannot come close to the refresh rates and resolutions that a $150 CRT can do.

two importnat questions:

Whats your budget?

What do you plan to use it for: Gaming, office work, music, video editing, messing with photos, just general surfing internet etc

Posted by djharper on Feb-08-2004 21:44:

i really dont know how too put together a computer (dah!). its just a computer for messin around recording music downloading media playing games. i dont wanna buy a store built one, i think their shit. im gonna spend 1400 - 1500 without extras. monitor, printer, etc.what would be a good setup? for that price

Posted by Tranceporter99 on Feb-08-2004 21:59:

Damn thats a good budget for building your own computer. I say go all out and get the best of everything. Seeing as i dont know much about building a comptuer i cant be much help but, If you do want to save some money is in the cd-rom, case, monitor area. But that does not apply to you. Sorry i couldnt be alot of help

Never do that with computers. Unless you have LOADS of cash and know EXACTLY what you're doing (example: a P4EE is the "best" according to Intel, but in reality, it is not - you'd end up blowing a lot of money when you could spend less on an A64).

Posted by jon on Feb-08-2004 23:08:

in terms of geting the best, i would get a "mid range" cpu, some quality ram, quality motherboard and quality video card:

typical system id go for is a :

pentium 4 2.4C or amd athlon xp2500+ barton core, a matched pair of high performance ram for dual chanal, such as corsair (what i use), ocz, etc and a radian 9800 pro.

both those cpu's are good overclockers if you wish to try overclocking, even if you deciede not to, they are more than good enough to run all the programs a home user would need to run

harddrive choice, dvd, cd etc are pretty much up to what your indivdiual needs are

Posted by moncster on Feb-09-2004 00:26:

Whenever I get a new comp/upgrade I tend to try and build last year's high end system. It's a lot cheaper and still very fast.

Posted by mndeg on Feb-09-2004 00:30:

athlon xp 2500
512 megs of pc3200 ram value ram is ok if you dont plan on overclocking
radeon 9600
WD 80 gig SE or more
SB audigy2 OEM
cd/rw of choice, liteon is good and cheap tdk and plextor is good too
400w power supply, antec

Posted by Dj Dovla on Feb-09-2004 00:55:

I just purchased a new system about 3 week ago

asus a7n8x e deluxe mobo
athlon xp 2500 batron
512 ram
120 gig HD
ATI radeon 9600 pro agp videocard
LG cdrw/dvd combo
adn all that other crap that comes with it

and I am more than happy with it ... really really good , and not too expensive either

Thats not what i said, I said the Best not the most expensive, for instance i know that AMD makes better chip sets than Intel does, and ATi is better than Nvidia[at least in my opinion], and he does have LOADs of cash, 1500 for a system period is alot, and home built, well thats as much as you can proabbly do with[including case mods and best case and all that]

cheers

Yea but in 90%+ of cases, the best is the most expensive.

Posted by djharper on Feb-09-2004 01:38:

i mean i dont wanna spend that much on a comp but i would because it would last a while. but if i could get away with spending less that would be wicked. also i add all the programs i wanted sound forge 7.0, acid pro4.0, friuty loops etc. but i found a way to get them for free so my limit is more like 600-800

Posted by TuanAnh213 on Feb-09-2004 01:45:

9600 pro = great value
