review:

besides what happened at customs for dave, it was a good night overall! lots of room to dance... lafleche was good! much better than the last time i saw him:P josh got on at 5am or so, played everythign from his laptop... which was interesting to say the least... it looked like very little skill was involved in beatmatching, as the program did everything .. he just had to drag and drop the tracks... (maybe it was a bit complicated than that.. but from what i saw, josh wasnt doing much.)

he played some nice tunes. especially the tune after beautiful things.. it soudned like a new motorcycle production, except more upbeat.. it had the vocals "take me home..." and during the break down, there was this weird skip effect.. like it sounded the cd was skipping.. but i guess thats impossible with the 100% digital output

the only complaint i have is the constant volume changes by josh! he kept raising/lowering the volume of some tracks, it just sounded awfull on teh dance floor. Like he totally butchered the breakdown in "Fallen"... and when the bass did kick in, the volume was raised to high and distortion was heard in some of the speakers. but i guess he just needed somethign to do, as the beatmatching was already done for him

night rating: 7/10
josh: 8/10
lafleche: 7/10
vibe: 9/10 <-- lots of room to dance + lots of friendly ppl.
cdn customs: 0/10 .. sluts

Review.

Personally, I had an awesome time, and I think he did too !
First, it was really nice to meet Josh Gabriel himself and to actually chat with him, you don't get these occasions very often.

At the beginning, I wasn't too much into Lafleche's style, but he was getting the crowd pumped.
One of the track he played with some guitar samples was amazing. Damn I wish I could ID that one.

Josh Gabriel set was awesome, I loved his track selection. He started off proggy, then went off to play their remixes. It was really cool to hear the guy himself play his own tracks, and to be so into his music (with a little help ).
He was going crazy into the booth, pumping up the sound in the red level lol, dropping and doing some effects (some of them which I didn't particularly like), but overall, I must say I really enjoyed it.

The only thing I regretted were his special effects on the chillout mix of as the rush comes. Would've made everyone much happier if he had played the track without anything !

Overall, great night, I had loads of fun. Nice meeting everyone.
I really hope they'll come back one day, both of them, to play to a more crowded room !

I didn't stay for Maus' set but she started off well.

The crowd, the vibe, the music, and the entertainment by the Dj were all there. Great night.

Later all. John

for my first event i have to say it was awesome. i got to meet josh and listen to some awesome music. ronger hooked me up as usual and i also got to meet some of the TA crew who were equally cool, offering a spot on guest list after just meeting me. shame the bouncers aren't as cool.

i had an awesome time, and loved every minute of his set, except maybe that little breakdown thing during as the rush comes bwhahaha

Lafleched did play a track called, Chick for free - 2002, sick classic rock tune, sick remix

Posted by malek on Feb-09-2004 04:24:

Josh, next time, if you read this, less alcohol, more mixing

Posted by ZinG on Feb-09-2004 04:35:

i think despite and regardless the fact of too much drinking
Josh played a brilliant set, and even if he was mixing on a Mac, it was more about showcasing his production, more than 50% of the stuff he played were either his production or remixes.
Respect to Josh
And hope we see both next time

i had a great night... nice to see u all usually peeps and others
Lafleche was nice, Josh.... what can i say, nice beats, i hate the fact that hes not mixing, it sucks....and DAMN he kept lowering the sound completly nowhere it fucked the groove....i dont know why but i didnt want to dance that much, it was always stopping too fast
the mix were poor, especially if we know that its beatmatched automatically....
anyway i like how Mus ended the night, i stayed till the end and i had a fantastic night with friends and thats what its all about..... but TECHNO is better

Posted by Ortemy on Feb-09-2004 06:37:

I am surprised to hear that Josh actually mixed off his macintosh lap top... Was not he just using final scratch ?

Posted by alec on Feb-09-2004 12:06:

no it was just a program to mix and beatmatch for him, I want that program, it soo easy to use apparently

Posted by j@y on Feb-09-2004 12:34:

i didnt like the fact that he was using a computer
yes it was one hell of a nice comp.......but i prefer good old plates

and if he didnt had to beatmatch at all
why is mix were not perfect :S

factor of skillz involved .....nearly zero...just had to turn the volume knob clockwise, sometime play with high, mid, bass knobs, somme little effects for as the rush comes :s
overall he mixed some great tracks but didnt offer a good djing performance
and wtf is he dooing with the sound level:|
the tune was just about to get to a high peak.....and the guy dropped the sound ...:S

automated djing programs sucks

our resident dj's mixed better witout shitty program

Posted by mastercongo on Feb-09-2004 14:32:

he was using a powerbook with mac osx. the program was Ableton Live
he still had to do some kind of mixing since he had 2 channels and to change one to the other he has to use the mixer.

Highlights, TA meetup had a decent turnout, but the venue was a little noisy and cramped. Was nice to meet Josh Gabriel and chat a little, seems pretty down to earth.

Music was banging all night long, tracklisting was sick, his mixing was fine, however his fiddling with the nobs on the mixer was destroying the songs about half way through the set, he was drunk and he just destroyed some of the songs, on a cd it may sound ok, but to dance to, it sucks because you can't keep a rythim going when the music dies.

The sound was quiet that night, for the first time in all my trips to Aria I finally heard the lights coming down, even during breakdowns of other djs they were still too loud for me to hear the mechanics in the lights rising and lowering.

I'd go see them again, but it sucks that Dave didn't make it, he's more my style

It's too bad Dresden got stopped at the border. I think Gabriel may have needed some babysitting. For the most part an enjoyable set, but probably some of the worst mixing I have ever heard. He managed to bring the entire dance floor to a halt on more then one occassion.

It was also a perfect sized crowd. There was enough room to dance and walk around without bumping into sweaty people. Very nice.

Enjoy!

Well his mixing and effects were disapointing, but the music itself was good. And the people on the dancefloor were great, loved the vibe.

he also played : Oliver Lieb - Metropolis (Metro Us remix)
