Sleep Paralysis

I read about it on a thread here a while back and thought it would be scary as hell to experience it....well unfortunately it happened to me on Saturday night and I can honestly say it was the scariest F******* thing I have ever gone through in my whole life.

Heres the whole story...keep in mind that I did not read anything from the link I am going to paste below until this morning. We have no internet at the new apartment yet.

My boyfriend recently moved into a new apartment and was unpacking stuff on Saturday night. I got tired around 1 a.m. and said I was going to sleep. I went in his room and got ready for bed. I had a small candle lit because I wanted a little light in the room. The AC was off because it was chilly out that night and we had the windows open. However, before I went to bed, I closed the windows in the room, because it was too cold, and I shut the door. I guess I fell asleep a few minutes later and started to have a weird dream (more like a nightmare). I dreamt that I was getting in an elevator and when I stepped inside it, there were no buttons to push, so I started to freak out and tried to get out of it. When I went to do this, it shut and the lights in the elevator started flickering (sort of like a strobe light effect). I started having a panic attack in my dream because I was scared that I was trapped in the elevator. I woke up from this dream because I felt some kind of pressure near my feet (at the foot of the bed). It honestly felt like someone had sat down on the bed and because I was still sort of out of it, I thought it was my boyfriend for a second. I opened my eyes and realized I was alone still in the room and that I couldnt move my body or talk. I was paralyzed and terrified. I felt like someone was in the room with me. I tried to yell out my boyfriends name, but I couldnt. I noticed that the candle was flickering intensely. This only happens when there is like a cross breeze or something, but there wasnt because of the AC being off and the windows shutso I thought that was weird. I think the candle had been flickering when I was having that dream too which probably had effect on my dream.

Anyway, I started to feel more pressure on my whole body, like someone was laying on me and it was becoming harder to breathe. I still couldnt move or talk. Then I heard a weird breathing noise in front of my face, but I swear to God I wasnt the one making this noise. The noise was similar to the sound of someone sucking in air with their lips puckered (like for a kiss). After I heard that noise, I was able to lift up my head, and the first thing I did was look at the clock and yell out my boyfriends name. I guess I still couldnt move my body. I yelled his name out like 3 times. My body jerked, and I could move again. I jumped out of bed and ran for the bedroom door and out in the living room, but my boyfriend wasnt there. I figured he went to the old apartment or something for a minute. I sat on the couch shaking like a leaf and almost crying. My boyfriend came back (he had gone to the gas station) and I told him what happened. After he calmed me down, we went to sleep and I dont know if I dreamt it or if it actually happened again, but I had a similar experience (not as intense) a few hours later (probably around 4 in the morning).

My boyfriend said it actually happened to him a few months ago, but he just never told me. He had the same symptoms I described and he said it scared the crap out of him too, but he was fine the next day. I am freaking out still and just writing about it now makes me feel uneasy.

Another weird thing (aside from the candle flickering for no reason) is that my dog doesnt like being in the room. He was at my moms that night, but we brought him over on Sunday morning. I always put him in the bedroom (at my bfs old place) when we leave and he is fine with it. But we left to rent a movie last night, and I put him in the room and he started whimpering and scratching at the door. And when that happened, my boyfriend informed me that earlier that day (Sunday) when I was running errands, he and his old roommate went to the old apartment to get the last of some stuff, so he put Lex (my dog) in the room and he was whimpering and scratching at the door then, too.

Has anyone gone through something similar? Please write about it.

Here is a link I found about SP, and it's eery how my symptoms are exactly like what they say and that lots of people go through this.

Smile

One of my friends actually had the same kind of experience, she woke up and was watching herself in the mirror and could only watch her mouth open but nothing would come out. Also, another of my friends mom's friend had that same experience and got diagnosed for it. The key is that once you feel a precense come down onto the bed with you, to wiggle your toes and your fingers. Just concentrate on doing that and eventually you should be able to conquer it. Hopefully this helps ya

This has happened to me before...pretty scary.

Not the same thing but on this topic of sleep, I also think it's really scary when you're having a nightmare and in the dream you wake up so you believe that you're actually awake and that everything's ok but then the nightmare starts again.

Posted by Boomer187 on Feb-09-2004 17:11:

yeah REM sleep paralyzes all your major muscles, so when you wake up quickly, like you get scared shitless in a nightmare, your muscles are still paralyzed. Waking after a nightmare can make it extremely unpleasant.

my buddies mom had this happen to her with a ghost. She woke up paralyzed and saw this old man moving his finger (like a come here motion) at my friends room. Kinda freaky. but she was just dreaming it all I think.

this did happen to me once. Since I don't believe in ghost or thigns of that nature I wasn't freaked out at all. I was napping and woke up with my eyes closed, but I felt someone sit down next to me. I thought it was my roommate but I could speak at all and when my eyes opened no one was around. I tried moving all my muscles but nothing happened.

I thought it was cool.

well i believe in "ghosts" or whatever you want to call them. i believe that our bodies have a soul which makes up our personality. and when we die, the body stays, and the soul leaves. our souls have to go SOMEwhere...i don't think they just die. but this is getting into the more religious aspect of it all, which i don't know too much about since i never studied the bible or anything. i was brought up catholic and had my communion and confirmation, but i consider myself more spiritual instead of catholic...

me and my dad have been through this several times growing up. From a doctor, it supposedly has something to do with the blood pressure level during sleeping that affects the brain somehow in the body functions and temporary paralysis. i am a bit skeptical tho, because i'm pretty sure if i could smell smoke from an in-house fire, i know i'd be able to wake up, get up and run the hell outta there.

you know what's weird is that now i'm totally fascinated (but still scared) and want to learn more about it. i almost want it to happen again so i can observe more, knowing what's going on. i asked my bf if he would play ouija board with me in the room. even though the thought of that scares me, i still wanna do it. i guess i like to test myself...

Oujia board...those things are freaky. I only used one once with my friend when I was younger, it spelled both our names and shit, and we both swore that we weren't messing with each other...after that I decided I'm not going to mess around with that stuff although I guess it can be fun.

i'm scared for you.
make sure you say "have a nice day" at the end of the game or else the ghost will think you are rude and curse the house

Posted by Slylee on Feb-09-2004 20:27:

hahah no i don't see dead people.

you know what's pissing me off so bad??? my dad and this guy i work with are pulling the whole, "you were dreaming it" bullshit. i know i was awake and i know what i felt...

Posted by djSlain on Feb-09-2004 20:34:

next time, bite your lip. if you feel the pain, then it's obvious you are concious

Posted by DJ_Ikronix on Feb-09-2004 20:35:

SP happens occasionally. As far as I know, it's simply what happens when your mind wakes up faster than the body.

I also have heard that your body kind of "holds" your mind in dream state until you can fully awake, so you may see things while you can't move.

100% of all alien abduction stories come from that, IMO.

It scared the crap out of me when it happened, once, and what's worse is that you remember it, unlike most nightmares.

Posted by Shudder on Feb-09-2004 20:39:

i think i've been through this only once before. i was young and coulndt remember what happened. all i remember is being temporarily frozen and i couldnt move anything. the problem was i didnt know if i was dreaming or not so i didnt make a big deal about it and that was forgotten quickly...

Posted by Slylee on Feb-09-2004 20:39:

good idea. i was even gonna go as far as to see if i can get the name and number of the chick who lived in the apartment before us and see if she had simliar experiences. i told my bf and he was like, "oh jesus, jamie the ghost buster"...

i always related ghost stories to like 100 year old houses next to grave yards and stuff. this is like a brand new luxury apartment complex...so i guess they are everywhere

well that gets into a whole what is reality thing. If you break it down what you experience is just brain waves. Your receptors transduct all the outside world, whether it be sound waves...light waves...odors, and channels that to the brain. That is where we experience the world.

SO it is possible to be dreaming yet it seems like reality. I am no judge on that and I would never say anyone was lying. I just always point out the possibility that it could have been imagined.

This has also kind of sparked my interest in it. Now i;'ll be looking around for some info.

Here's a Standford Site on it.

and your belief in "ghosts" or spirits just adds to the unpleasant emotino of the eperience. Since you don't understand em, it is freaky.

The apartment complex is probably located on an ancient indian burial site.
Just rent 'poltergeist'. Oh yeah when u go to bed dont leave the tv on!

Posted by THE_Chris on Feb-09-2004 21:15:

It happened to me one too. I woke up and couldnt move.

For some reason though, I remembered I'd heard about it on Discovery Channel a week before, so I just lay there until it passed.

Posted by Toufas on Feb-09-2004 21:57:

its not ghosts lol
i have the same problem...last time it happened i was scared a lot (and i had it like 20+ times in my life) coz i thought i was gonna stay like that forever

when u were trying to speak or move ur finger u couldnt breath right? i couldnt multitask just do one thing at a time....it scary coz u dont know when its gonna happen...

ugh.. i haven't slept in 36 hours..

Posted by capricorn15 on Feb-09-2004 23:09:

i had that happen, where i cant move when i wake up. i think its like when you fall asleep in the car when parked and your foot or something loses the blood so when you wake up it hurts when the blood starts pumping back in. anyways, ya, that happened to me once, i was like wtf, and then it started to hurt and hten i could move, thought it was kind of funny afterward though

Posted by Azz3D on Feb-10-2004 00:48:

When I was younger (about 8 or 9) I used to unconsciously get up in the middle of the night and just sit on the bed all night and stare at the wall... I was pretty freaked out when I realized what I was doing...

Posted by benh on Feb-10-2004 00:52:

I used to get it almost everyday for about yr ago for a few months. I still get it once in awhile. usually when im stressed out.

this has actually happened to me before several times. I never knew that this was really a medical condition or anything. its definitly a very strange and unpleasant experience. like you cant move at all but your mind is semi-awake and you can still think. everytime it happens though I know what is happening and still can't control it. I've heard things before when its going on but im starting to think that it's like half dreaming or something. i hate when it happens its so f'd up.
I've never gotten any ghosts visits like some of the other posts, but if i do I hope the ghost is a DJ and can spin for me when I in the middle of the SP!!
