Z95 playing TRANCE???

i guess it has a really commercial appeal... but... its 2:15 and i just heard z95 (i dont listen, it was my bro's radio, honest) play Delerium - Innocente...
it wasnt the original version, but it was like a radio edit very similar to the lost witness remix. almost identical, but missing a couple elements. in certain parts its exactly the same, i thot it was originally the lost witness mix..
enuff ramble

but dont yall think thats kinda weird... i mean dont tell me innocente is gonna become the "sandstorm" for vancouver of 2001

not probable... but possible?

(should i be thankful that its being played on the radio?)

2:15 am or pm? ah shit in either case...thats probably gonna be one of the trance tunes that those stupid z fags will ride on all year long.

Satan (eek!)

...about two weeks ago, as far as my memory tells me, I've heard Delerium - Silence (Airscape mix) at about 10 pm on Z 95.3 I got my eye-balls falling out...I love this song and I certainly didn't expect this kinda radio station to play it, anyway I really wish it wasn't the last time they played but I feel happy for them cuzz they played it for the 1st time...and yes back to the topic I saw the video Delerium - Silence (it's deep dish's mix btw) on much chan 35.
Peace.

Posted by jesten on Aug-06-2001 21:23:

Don't even get me started on Z95

Posted by patticus on Aug-06-2001 21:33:

it was in the am... that's funny prodigy, but silence is very "last year" right.. if they're playing the lost witness mix of innocente.. damn that's like current stuff?!?

who knows what they're doing to their playlist.. maybe taking a clue from bbc radio 1? i wish

Posted by Morphalo on Aug-06-2001 22:55:

Evil1 arghhh...

If you ask me I would tear down that damn station (Z95)
they have no right to play good trance tunes...
they should stick with their top 40 crap
cause I highly doubt that they are going to open their eyes any time soon and see the world around them and maybe get some ideas (like you said from Radio 1 )
when that happens I can retire as a happy man
but until then we have to work on setting up our own little TA station
for all present and future trance lovers
lets show to the Van what they are missing

sometimes when i tune in to Z on fri's or sat's, not sure which day it is exactly, theyve got their house party thing, and they do play those odd trance mix's now and then, but i cant tell right now cause i havent listened to the lame-ass station in ages
or sometimes, you know the background music theyve got when theyre talking? anyways, sometimes they play old trance tunes, which is kinda cool i guess

I heard many many times Azzido da bass - Doom's night (Timo Mass mix) in the background, Madonna - for a gurl (above & beyond mix) even Dumonde - On da move.

Posted by .montecarlo. on Aug-07-2001 03:25:

REALLY well i guess i havent listened to z in a long ass time(probly 5 years), i guess some trance is better than no trance. hehe. i dont tune into z for fear of hearing something like ricky martin or britney spears, so i'll probly stick to cds and mp3s

prodigy: is the story "about a yooooong girl"..hehe, cool track

yes they do this always when talking about their "club nites" if i remember correctly.. i havent actualyl listened to it in at least a year... but when i heard the innocente (lange radio? mix) on my bro's radio (the comp is beside his room)
i was stunned, i stopped and went and looked and listened.
hehe

Posted by dasun on Aug-09-2001 08:58:

I hate it when Z runs a good song on like that...they play it again and again and again and again till nobody likes it nemore. Damn them! and i just got the Delerium - Innocente vinyl...i guess in a few months that record will be overdone and will be a waste of money for me.

I wanna give em a call and tell em 2 stick to their "POP" music, and let 96.1 do all the underground!

Posted by raver4life on Aug-17-2001 18:08:

yea unfortunately soon as a good song hits that station, just like any other top40 station in the world, they overplay it to death then the song no matter how good it is becomes boring even though it (was) a great song. Too bad Z95 has to ruin in on club nites with those tracks from what i've listened to it.

Posted by hypronix on Sep-25-2001 20:48:

I think that sometimes they slip trance, but they must make it like an accident.. cuz Z95 doesn' play good music! (that's a fact)
I heart the two songs from Delerium too, but at some pretty fuked up hours in the night... so that's about it.

Posted by apri_peel on Sep-26-2001 19:00:

you know how they have those lil thingies that go 'Z, 95.3 blah blah blah', you know, they advertise themselves, telling you what you're tuned to?? anywho, theyve got one of them things and i could SWEAR i heard tiesto's urban train in one of them, but its there for a split second, i know its urban train cause i been listening to that song a bit too much lately

a lil off-topic: can U actually overlisten to a trance song?

cuz I listened to Flaming June at least 100 times (I am bein' as realistic as possible) and I wouldn't mind puttin' it back on right now!

Z95 is the bane of my existance. I've done some DJ'ing at Kits Pub in Vancouver and it fucking drives me crazy when people request the shit that's played on Z. I'm way too big of a snob to really hold that job down now I think.

That and annoying cougars coming up to request Cindi Lauper, or my personal favourite, when they say "Play something I can dance to!" in the middle of playing Urban Train (actually happened). MUST.. CONTROL.. ANGER.

Anyways, the other day I was listening to Barthezz - On the Move on my 1200s, and right afterwards I put Z on (I have no idea why), to hear it playing. I was like "OMG WTF!!!", but of course it was one of their 6 second advertisements and they quickly got back to shitty top 40.

Here's to my fellow trance snobs!

I know what U R sayin'!
I've sometimes DJed to my friends parties back in Romania (though I have never used a mixer or anything... just changin' songs on the computer/music thingy. nothin' big!), and they come to me and say "Hey, could U please put om something that we can actually dance to?" and they were reffering to some stupid gipsy shit that was en vogue then... fukin' great!

but then again not so many are enlightened.

hehe man i hate that shite
also "it takes too long to get to the good part"

that's why you listen to radio edits, you radio-loving MASSES

Z95 has been trying to play dance music for quite a while. It has something to do with their licensing which forbid them to play certain type of music. (Rhythem and blue to something... I don't remember.) The point is that Freeway Frank (Now a radio DJ in Toronto) who had been trying to push the dance music here in Vancouver, but their music director was somewhat reluctant. So now you can only hear few of the dance music tunes once in a while.
As for the Z club thing at the Rage. It also has something to do with the Canadian broadcasting regulation. They have to play certain percentage of Canadian content within their program. That's why their Saturday night live thing was kinda lame.
As for Delerium, they are from Vancouver. So that justifies as Canadian content. That could explain why you heard Delerium in the early morning.
As for DJing. I had the opportunity to play at Big Bam Boo on Thursday nights before. I know what DJ Sean had to say about playing "Something we can dance to" thing... "Can you play Leon Lai? Utada Hikaru? Ayumi Hamasaki? 'Butterfly' from DDR????" Argh!!!!!!!!!

sorry if i offended anyone's musical tastes if you actually like these tracks, but i just can't hold my laughter.....

thats CanCon you're talking about, the percentage was increased earlier this year, but i still dont get something, if Z has to comply with certain regulations that forbid them from playing "dance" music, how come do XFM and Fox have those shows on saturday nights that place electronic music? all three are pretty much top 40 stations, they just specialize in different music styles that have absolutely nothing to do with "dance" music, in fact Z porlly relates better to trance/house/techno than the 2 other
erm, my point is, its not so much up to laws and regulations, as to music directors and owners of stations that are being closed-minded

nope, it just isn't commercial. and they would start losing their listeners. do you think there are more trancers or hip-hoppers in Van?

btw, what frequency do those two stations emit on?

Posted by apri_peel on Oct-03-2001 04:56:

right, thats exactly what i meant. directors/owners are profit driven, pretty much the only reason they've got these stations running. its the same thing with european stations, they might be spinning trance, but trance IS a big thing there
Z is at 95.3
Fox - 99.3
XFM - 104.9

Posted by Bundesbahn on Oct-03-2001 05:49:

To Turbo GS-R:
Chinese music has been a big part of it on Thursday nights at the Bam Boo. Butterfly from DDR is completely my fault. I was the one that first introduced the DDR music in nightclubs.

Apri_Peel:

Yeah. CanCon. I believe it's now 50%?
As for the licensing. It was a big thing among the industry few years back. Remember when they were petitioning for the new Urban radio station last year? That was also the same time that CFOX was making a license change from Rock to something else. That's why there were words flying around about "The Beat" might not pass the licensing hearing. . XFM has the licensing content of being different than Z. So they can basically playing (somehow) whatever they want. 96.1 is ethnic content, that's why they have that Planet Aaj thing. A side note. CFOX used to have the have 15% of market share. Their market share before the the lisencing change was about 6.something%. a bit less then their very first broadcasting share which was about 7% 35years ago. Of course they had to do something to win back the audience.
As for what those licensing contents are? You guys can check out the CRTC site. I am too lazy to do so.
Do you guys remember when Z used to play Euro back in the early 90's? Culture Beat, KLF, C&C, and the rest? That's when they had different ownership and license. That's why what they played before 1995 were different than what they play now.
As for the commercial viable tunes. Z has learned a valuable lesson after "return of the Mack." It took them a year to put that song to #1. It also changed Z's music direction.

If you guys are confused by what I have to say, it's because I am in a different time zone right now. I will write a more detailed version of it if you guys are interested.

Posted by apri_peel on Oct-03-2001 07:25:

bundesbahn, you ever taken communications or something? cause you sound a lot like what i was sposed to learn in one of my classes. that was a good summary of one of my books lol

the sad sad sad thing about Z, is that it still has a huge audience, despite all the crap pop they play, and may i add the music they play is also pretty retarded, way behind everybody else, even local rock stations
maybe one day, when trance will become mainstream (like sandstorm did) we will be able to listen to some ferry, or oakey or even pvd on Z <---------- scary thought
