DigiCam Recommendations
I need a nice, sturdy, reliable (that won't fuck up with a little beach sand, etc.) and quality digital camera for this summer, and that takes vid clips longer than just 30 sec. Something in the range of $500 USD. Also one that runs on AA batteries instead of rechargables and thats fast/easy to set up on netcafe computers to upload pics/vids.
Can anyone recommend anything?

Panasonic DMC-F1 has 3.2 Megapixel and a Leica lens

Just $330,-
It's better in making pictures than videos though...
Epinions is a great review site btw
let's be serious, digital cameras are for taking digital pictures, not videos. video quality isn't that great usually.
www.dpreview.com
i'd recommend investing into a canon

my canon s230 is the shiznit. 3.2 megapixels, all these cool features and its like the size of a cigarette box..it goes everywhere with me
for $500 maybe an s400?
If i were you id go with Nikon. They specialize in lens technology. I just bought a Nikon Cool Pix 4300 Camera. Its amazing. 4.0 megapixel 12 scene modes. PM me and i can show you some pics ive taken with it.
Only brands you can go for are canon or nikon
But in my best suggestion the powershot canon cameras beat the nikon cameras by a lot in quality and clarity. The images are much sharper and you can change the lens
. I was about to buy a coolpix camera but then I read the reviews and asked my friend for advice since he's a pro at digital cameras. Lucky bastard got a digital rebel for 1700 with new lens and a gig card
.
I have the powershot a80 4 megapixel and its amazing. If you saw my panorama shot thread thats what it looks like. I just resized the image since the max size was huge.
But ya if you check the top 5 in that price range the powershots are the best.
Powershot S400 is a very nice, and small camera. No complaints here, except I haven't quite figured out how to do wide angle shots. You might want to also invest in a larger CompactFlash card, as 16MB isn't that much, as you'll soon find out.
i got myself a canon s400 last year. i love the cam, its compact, 4 megapixels, etc.. it came with a 32mb card, i then bought myself a 256.
i also got the chance to play around with an olympus 3 megapixel cam, the pics turned out awesome with that cam.
but, i still prefer my canon
Trancegeek: the best point and shoot camera on the market for its price is the F717 by Sony.
I've tried many cameras, even that A80
which is supposed to bbe better than the S400 and not one comes close.
The camera is a bit cumbersome if you plan on dancing with it in a club and just above the 500$USD you are planning to spend. But it makes up with image clarity with its exceptional lenses. The movie mode is excellent and can shoot for an ulmtd amount of time as long as you have space on your card!
Nothing can touch it in low light conditions in the point and shoot market.

no flash used.

flash and the shutter open for a fraction of a second

no flash, low light, shutter open for about 1 1/2 second.

no flash, shutter open for 2 seconds.

flash in a low light lounge
here's some movie clips shot with the f717.
the first one is shot in a car in the day, just to give you an idea of the quality outside of a club, its just before evening.

the second one is chris liebing @ aria, i have a regular dv camera, but I was just messing around with my f717 and I filmed... the sound is a bit harsh but thats expected with digital cameras.
http://d183252.u38.mygisol.com/MOV00827.ZIP around 42 megs
The second one is donald glaude at Dagobert and the sound is bad because of the crazy volume in there.
http://d183252.u38.mygisol.com/MOV01211.ZIP around 27 megs
all of these films haven't been processed and are in their original format. Imagine what you can do with them with a bit of editing.
i just got the sony dsc-t1.
about the size of a credit card. will put it to good use this weekend for Ferry Corsten. 5. mp ; 32 mb.
hopefully i will post pics. easy to use as well.
then agian the a80 is pretty good if you know how to use it
not saying you don't know but I like to use manual shots instead of the auto cuz auto doesn't make it all the better.
auto is good sometimes when i need a quick snap and can't be too arsed to fiddle with all the controls.
other than that, manual is the way to go, especially if you know what you're doing and have lots of options.
point & shoot is really for the "point & click" type of pc people
