What do you guys do between mixes?
we all know that the most important part of DJ'ing is the actual mix from song to song. but seeing as good DJ's can beat match in 30 to 90 seconds and the actual mix also lasts between 30-90 seconds, what then do you do after, in the time between those, while a song plays? fiddle around with the eq? drink a beer? talk to friends? dance? what do you do and what do the big DJ's do?
Like you said, fiddle with the eq's, have a drink, ferret around in your record box deciding on the next song.
I once saw Ferry Corsten play live, and he just kind of stood there, one hand either side of the mixer, with a big smile on his face and nodding his head. He did this while waiting for every single mix. Pompous twat!
Usually I am thinking about the next song after the upcoming mix so I'll be looking through my bin...or I'll dance a bit..have a smoke...a drink or whatever....
I make sure the tracks match up perfectly then i set it in the correct possition then wait..........waiting usually consists of me keepin the beat by dancin/bobbin my head. Tryin to keep focused on the mix. Sometimes if its going great and im really feelin it I'll just let go and BOOGIE LOL
Fiddle with EQ, Dance, bob to beat, drink, and what I think is very important..crowd interaction. Now I dont mean mic work..cuz that can be very annoying...but u know what I mean
I think a DJ who is into it is soo much more interesting to see that somebody who stands there and plays music. fuckin I paid $40 to see u spin..now enjoy yourself god dammit
I do all of the things you said... fiddle with the EQ, dance a little, talk to a friend, talk to girls, have a drink...
When i get going into a mix,i just cant stop pounding my fists and bobing my head, jumpin up and down etc.I just generaly lose the plot

i usually dance my ass off between mixes and drink my water and play with eq hehe but im mostly jumping around dancing and shit
spend the next 5-8 minutes attempting to beatmatch the next record, lol

Trance.....Energy
between tracks, i match the beats, fiddle with the EQ, talk to tall the ladies who requests tracks that u know u will never play cause ATC, Anne Lee, Sarina Paris and Fragma aren't....... Trance....and if it ain't on vinyl.... i am not playin it.
....and then of course u always have to light up that cig.
get a nice young lady from the crowd to kneel down infront of you and....
no, really, what everyone else has said really, have a drink, bounce to the music, and of course, interacting with the crowd, that is so important imo.

When Everything Sounds A+ OK...Beat,EQ, and everything else
I just look at the ladies in the crowed...picking one
...but I'v got a girl, so all of it is about to change

I cant believe this, none of you DJ's out there sample other records just to fuck with the crowd. Or begin mixing in a record you dont actually play just to fool them? Thats my favorite way to kill time between mixes.Anyone??
Kev
i like to sample the next record a bit, if ive beatmatched quickly
at this rave one time a while ago, this dj was going off and he kept sampling in Azzido da bass - Doom's night
he never actually dropped it down and played it, just kept teasing us with it... and finally, at the end of his set, we're screaming encore! and what does he do? drops down doom's night...
everyone in the place went insane!

that gives me an idea.......im gonna try something like that hmm...hehe
Quite often, I would use a particular song as a sort of "theme" and sort of tease with that song for a while before actually dropping it all the way in. Usually, I would spend my time between mixes figuring out what I was gonna play next, beltin' down a cocktail, talking with people/ friends, listen to any demos that people might have brought in, I only adjust the EQ if it is really necessary...which it usually isn't. For the most part, just figuring out what I was gonna play next
was enough because I don't play a pre determined set. It's all spur of the moment...which keeps one pretty busy.

When mixing what you do depends on the environment. If I'm in a club I'll get some crowd interaction going, i.e. dance and bring them up to the builds and vreaks etc. Usually it'll take the first 30 seconds or so after I've done one mix to pick my next tune. Allow another minute or more to CUE and beatmatch it and then you're into the breakdown of the current tune. If they're beatmatched and playing well together I'll drop in a few beats from the incoming tune, and more often than not they'll be time synced too so mini-breaks in the next tune coincide with ones in the build-up of the current one. Never ever would I stand there doing nothing, ppl would soon see that I wasn't that into what I was doing and thus loose interest themselves, but that's just my HO!

Depends on what I'm playing...
Epic Trance = me bouncing around having a hard time keeping headphones on my head cause I'm dancing so hard.
Progressive = me trying to keep my eyes opened because of how stunning the music can be, so captivating.
hmm...I am usally thinking how I am going to get the cute little blonde girl to come home with me
But I am even thinking of that when I am mixing
i love to put some samples of the next tune (voices or beats).
i search the next tune to mix, because i never determine my set previously.
i dont drink.
i dont smoke.
i just look the crowd to determinate my next movement.
