Why does Sydney suck so much for trance!
its getting frustrating these days how Sydney is becoming worse and worse.... gigs are closing down everywhere and the lack of venues isnt helping.
is it the lack of adequeate promotion? is it the inexpierience of promoters? is it the punters?...
this continues into radio.. with all major radio stations reluctant to play anything dance related, you tell them our tracks are huge and they tell you to go jump.. then months later they end up hammer tracks by 4strings, plummet lmc vs u2 and soon to be oceanlab...... and when u say "i told you about this track 2 months ago" they go "yeah whatever"
meh
sydney sucks
im gonna move to melbourne, seems you guys have some wicked nights; Altitude, 5am, Viper ettcc? yeah?
it'd say it's a combination of factors.
certainly the lack of punters at the clubs/events is a major reason for the sad scene we have here. also the quality of events -- but without the people, there isn't enough to justify the massive production costs (which in turn draw more people). round and round we go...
just look at the numbers at two tribes over the past few years for example. the fact that they had to make it 15+ (instead of 18+ a few years ago) is an indication of the state of affairs...
sydney does not appreciate trance.
screw all them r'n'b, hip-hop, top 40 and whatever else joints around here. the people at those things suck. really disappointing coz i find i enjoy myself heaps more at trance nights.
I'm actually thinking of throwing a trance night in sydney. It'll be a one off and then we'll see from there. I'm struggling with venues though, I was thinking maybe Space? I haven't been there but apparently its been fixed up from Tall Paul etc. Any suggestions for venues apart from icebox? And if someone wants to give me a hand putting on the night, i'll take any help!!
I dont know what your budget is, but Space will set you back an arm and a leg to hire thats for sure !!

Sydney sucks cause trance is small here in comparison to other genres.
The interest is very low yet some people still go ahead and try make a venue for it.
then i think this comes back to where alot of BIG clubs are doing other genres, like Gatecrasher (or Ministry Of Sound?) doing more commerical and now doing hip hop just to keep the cash flow up to keep the club open.
meh, its better than nothing
Try going to some of the gay parties, like Arc, they play heaps of trance!
So looks like Space is out....any other suggestions? And no gay clubs!
welcome to perth!
cOz yOu'rE AlL GuRnErZ???

am with Josh on this one. Keep your toes, eyes and fingers crossed everyone, there is light at the end of the tunnel.
Also I will be putting on an event-style gig soon for trancetribe. Nothing small here. Full scale event at Bohem with some great Djs, maybe even an international.
Don't want gigs to close down, then there needs to be MORE numbers going to the gigs, ie Halcyon. So go tell all y our RnB lovers all about trance and get them to join the light side of the force
Scottie
I have been to Sydney a couple of times and both times I tried to find somewhere to go and listen to some trance and low and behold all there was was crappy r&b and pubs. The first time I ended up in some pub where they were playing hard house and the dj was crap he couldn't mix. The second time I ended up at the Chinese laundry which wasn't too bad. I am heading to Sydney again at the end of april and I would really like to check out a good trance night. Don't give up on running a trance night I know from what we have here in perth that even though there isn't many trance nights being run that people still love trance and given the chance they would go.
lol.
Mangler and Joshva are right. The gay scene really does have gr8 trance parties.
The 2 main trance parties are Ruby and Toybox.
Ruby - www.rubydance.com.au
Toybox - www.toyboxparty.com.au
These are the best parties I have been. The overall production is incredible. Music, sound quality, lighting and lasers.
Also you will find at this Mardi Gras party trance being played in the RHI for part of the night, as well as there being 2 up and coming DJ's playing trance in an outside area.
And then, dare I say it, there will be a Trance recovery during the day at the Midnight Shift. Mardi Gras Recovery - Trance
Perhaps trance would work better as a side-room event. Rather than make trance the focus of the night, why not get trance as a second room at an event like Sweetchilli or something like that. Obviously certain combinations wouldn't work, but I think some certainly would....
Mr O'shea I see you are making a bit of a name for yourself up in Sydney...whynot start your own nite?
Trance parties used to be mainly mixed events in Melb, and i'm sure in Sydney too. Wth the emergence of Magnitude, ARQ, etc. at about the same time we were getting bombarded with big events like Gatecrasher, etc. It seems the newer "rave" generation didnt blend in with the gay/mixed scene. Hence, some people think trance died, when it didnt. Magnitude, ARQ, Ruby, & Rawhide (formerly XTC) are now more gay than mixed, but are still among the biggest dance parties in Australia, playing trance!
They have brought out artists such as Aurora, Space Bro's, Matt Darey.... & have Hemstock & Jennings, & Matt Darey & Marcella Woods coming out in the next few months. These events draw 1200 - 2000 people regularly (Magnitude sold out the entire Metro twice last year). The Melbourne events continually get Sydney dj's like Neil Crawford, Luke Leal, Sample Gee, and Matt Steer from Brisbane, along with our own Jason Prior & Zac Curran. All playing trance.
Trance is still very popular amongst the general public also, just walk down Chapel St (Melb) & you can hear it being played in all the shops, or in any gym. My gym is one of the biggest in Melbourne & they play trance 95% of the time. The big dance parties like Gods Kitchen, etc all have trance as the main acts.
For some reason this popularity doesnt convert to clubs anymore. why? is it too many drugs in the scene?? have clubs lost their glamour? are people just over going to clubs? somehow we need to harness this popularity into numbers at our events
The purist trance events seem to be lacking numbers, but i reckon a few more numbers could really help push the balance & have our events as being very successful. Stick at it & the likes of A Night At The Icebox, Atlantis, Halcyon, etc will succeed.
Like it or not, the DJ's have to be marketed like stars when it comes to trance.
Look forward to what ever suprises Josh & Scotty have instore
I'm studying marketing at the moment, so by the end of the year i will be an expert and make all your events be a success

hmm true... but whilst i dont idolise Armin over anyone else, he's worked for 10 years to become an overnight sensation & he does do a hell of a lot for the trance scene with ASOT, record & distribution labels, productions, etc. I dont know how he fits everything in??
... Muli, we look forward to your thesis!
