Microsoft = Micro****

Just reading todays news and another WORM is circulating the internet, due to Microsoft's crap software, im pissed off, everyday theres a new Worm out, another Patch, another lame download, another Service Pack, Bagle-B ? lol who the hell thinks of these names, Anyone else fed up with Microsoft, I re-formated my Hdd two days ago and as soon as i established an internet connected ' Valla ' Your PC will shutdown in 60 seconds, im really conciderin getting my UNIX Manuals out and installing something really secure. Could be worst i could be a network technican running windows server 2003 lol.

/me sits pretty with the knowledge that is mac is both more reliable and not connected to the internet, and they thought he was mad

That happened to me, too! A word of warning to anyone thinking about re-formatting or re-installing Windows: ensure you have the MSBlaster removal patch somewhere. It's difficult to download it when establishing an internet connection instantly primes your PC for random automatic reboots!

It is frustrating that new Windows vulnerabilities seem to keep being discovered (and subsequently exploited) on a daily basis, but perhaps it's an inevitable consequence of Windows being such a widespread operating system.

Bashing Microsoft is so last millennium.
Windows is not that bad if properly set up.

im sure the current worm is sent via email , so if people actualyl checked emails etc before they open attachments, or ran some anti virus software (www.grisoft.de, ffs its free!) these things wouldnt be as bad.

windows 98 seems to be fine for me.

hurrah for me not downloading no goat porn.

Exactly. My XP machine at work runs for a week or 2 with no rebooting always on the internet, running all sorts of DB/development tools. You gotta know what you're doing I guess. When you get an email that says "From Microsoff, please download NOW! Must fix patch now!" you have to know not to run that program.

Of course macs/linux machines aren't the target of virus writers since there are hardly any users compared to the number of MS users.

Windows 98 is a lot more stable than XP... I guess it helps that you're not downloading goat porn

this isnt just microsofts fault, stop bashing them

I didn't mean to do any bashing...it's just that there is a higher user base for windows which makes it easy to target...I actually like windows 98 alot, it's the best os they made.

I have Windows 98 still also I barely have probs with it .....

except for the fact that I'm getting a new piece of audio equipment (the MPC 1000) that requires 2000/ME/XP to recognize the USB as a drive in my cpu, so I'm kinda scared to upgrade

Fuck it get a MAC

Get norton anti virus and a linksys firewall. You will NEVER get a virus/hacked again. Seriously, if you set it up correctly, your email and all running aplications will be scaned, and the firewall vlocks all the ports that MS leaves open to attack.

don't use Outlook Express! Many viruses exploit Outlook.

which is why most virus's are sent via email . . .

designed to get all those not so clued up ppl who send thousands of joke emails to each other at work to open the attachment and install some nasty worm on to thier systems.

once installed, some of these worms will then go out thru your firewall because they are concealed to look like a legitimate windows applications, like 'taskmon' or 'services'
a really good firewall will detect the 2nd instance of a program trying to access the internet and will either ask u to confirm its allowd or will automaticly stop it.


latest virus to be causing a problem is the W32/netskyb worm.

comes in thru ur email with random content and random message body and usually with a double extension file attachment.
similar to the mydoom virus but this one replaces an existing mydoom virus with itself, how nice

IDK if this has been said before but you don't have to get the blaster patch to stop it from infecting you. Either A.) Disable DCOM services in the administrator panel (kinda difficult to remember where this is at) or B.) Just enable the WXP firewall you n00b.

that is all.

*edit* alright to disable Distributed COM (which is what blaster infects) simply go
start-
settings-
control panel-
adminstrative tools-
component services-
expand component services-
expand computers-
go to the properties tab on the my computer you now see (right click on it)-
go to the default properties tab-
UNCHECK "Enable Distributed COM on this computer"
Be sure to hit "OK" afterwards.

Viola - that's all there is to it. Enabling the WXP firewall on your connection might be a bit simpler though.

hmm.. you're not making sense. multiple program execution capability is dependent on your ram,cpu, and harddrive. if the progs keep glitching, its not designed for XP.

this was the case with a friend, computer illiterate. kept trying to run company software on an XP when its only designed for 9x/ME. I enlightened him before he bought more needless expensive equipment.

When I say multiple programs I'm talking two, explorer and Excel. It can't be the computer cause it was brand new.

I mean on my mac I can have the internet open, itunes radio running, limewire downloading and photoshop open.
