Progression of a trance music listener

1. Somehow gets exposed to trance music, either at the club or through a friend. Likes one particular track and asks for more tracks like it.

2. Furiously searches for and then downloads trance songs, mostly cheese. Finds online community full of snobby veterans who makes fun of his newb tracks.

3. Newbie listens to the advice of the veterans and downloads better tracks. Starts to see beat patterns in trance and really enjoys the music for what it is. This stage is like a baby... pure and innocent.

4. Starts to share music with friends, and they make fun of the music because it all "sounds the same." He doesn't understand why people would be so closed minded and listen to the pop trash on MTV. Not by accident, his newer friends like trance too.

5. After some time, our trance listener becomes a veteran. He posts on forums making fun of newbies for their primitive tastes. He becomes upset when his favorite tracks become mainstream. Starts to call 90% of all music cheese.

6a. Starts listening to other genres and see's the light... posting on how trance is dead, how it's not the same, how tiesto sucks, etc. and how techno/house/progressive/tech-trance or jungle is the best kind of music in the world.

AND/OR

6b. Decides to become a DJ

7. Reaches a level of zen where he doesn't care about genres or what other people like. He listens to music for the emotions and states it puts him through.

I'd say I'm a 6a without the ignorance. Although I can't stand PvD.

Posted by Tranc3 on Feb-23-2004 21:01:

I'd say I'm at level 7, although I don't think I ever really went through level 5 or 6, that is, I never made disparaging comments about newbies that I meant, and I don't really care if stuff stays underground or not. Plus I don't think of people that listen to stuff on MTV as closed-minded, I think of people that percieve trance and/or EDM as the best musical genre ever as closed-minded. And I've never really gone through a "trance is dead, Tiesto sucks" phase.

Music is music whether or not it's EDM or folk music. There's good music and there's bad music, I listen to it all from all genres.

Hah! You pussies! I'm level 10, which laughs at the shit posts like this. Be a man and listen to whatever makes you feel good. EDM, rock, punk, metal, hip-hop, its all good if done properly and if it appeals to you.

I thought that's what level 7 was about :

ROFL

Hey Rocking Horse, good observation. Now you must wonder, why do SOME people feel the need to move on to other genres? The people that now say "Trance is dead" "Tiesto sucks" etc... Trance is the same and Tiesto hasn't changed all that much... so what causes these intense feelings of neglect towards trance at some point in their musical evolution? I've never felt it, but it seems you are now... although being *cough*veteran*cough* you still listen to loads of parmesan bro.

Posted by Diehard_clubber on Feb-23-2004 22:18:

Or the much more original stages of a clubber model!

Stage 1: Initial contact with clubbing made. Clothing will probably be some trousers, a ben sherman shirt and some shoes. Will often wear ( un funky) sunglasses too.

Stage 2: Honeymoon stage. This is wear rave gimpness begins. U get easily excited by every night and love almost every DJ. You go out a lot more now than before. You will probably be seen attempting cyber, and badly. Hair may be sprayed in a variety of colours, RAC jackets worn, etc.. Finding star gazer seems like you've discovered the holy grail. If you are going to start taking drugs, now is the time.

Stage 3: Will be split in 2. ... On one hand you have now mastered cyber on the other you abandoned the rave clothes in exchange for something more comfy. This is the caining stage and can last for ages. You go out everyweek if you can, often several times in one weekend. You put ur body thro hell, and love every minute of it. You now know most people in the clubs too.

Stage 4: The ' Got the T shirt stage'. You've now been there and done it all before. You are still going out all the time, and loving it tho will not be getting as excited as in the past. If you were ever taking drugs, it is likely that you will have eased off now and prefer a more social approach. The days of chatting sh!t to a complete stranger are gone.

Stage 5: The miserable old git stage. You're starting to get bored now.. It was always better ' back in the day'. You'll still go out, tho it will slowly stop as you begin to settle down. The yellow
