I've always wanted to post this:

give some examples of artists that fall under the following genres so that I can finally get an idea of what they are

of course not many have a clue

i write on all three types of releases (ambient, downtempo and chillout)

Ambient - Pete Namlook, Maitreya (councilofnine.co.uk)...get their latest cd...that's ambient

Downtempo - More things off Compost out of Germany, Pork Recordings (try Pork 095....review up on the usual site)

Chillout - Zen Connection 1 and 2 (oneworldmusic.com.au)...reviews up shortly on both...

all are different but most artists will tell you that they don't seem to give a damn what genre the music is....as long as they are happy...pm me if you want more suggestions.

House has many forms

House was originally disco which was taken from kraftwerks and others. You had Larry Levan (RIP 1991) and Frankie Knuckles in New York in the mid 70's pushing disco, which later became house with a ton of others. They moved to chicago, you had frankie and ron hardy (RIP 1991), may and co. took the hardy experience and applied it to their techno (which was not techno at that time).

Frankie Knuckles is still house
Masters at work is mostly house
Lottie is house

list goes on and on.

Ambient is usually beatless and much more abstract. Listen to a few songs I mentioned earlier.

dj dan used to play trance...i liked that style more

now he plays house more....still a good dj

chillout, downtempo and ambient are usually grouped under chillout but they are all seperate and all different.

ambient is usually adding wind samples, makes you feel like you are in another place then sitting at home listening

chillout is a popular word these days

downtempo is usually different

you have to listen to understand and I'm learning that..since I review all 3 genres for ivibes...i see the difference.
