-- What to spin?¿
What to spin?¿
Well, I've just bought my 2 technics MK5, an Akyiama AP85 amplifier and a pair of tannoy reveal monitors. LOgically now I need the mixer and vinyls. About the mixer I will buy it in 2 weeks after to pay my insurance car.
And here is my doubt about vinyls. The thing is I like trance and techno in the same quantity just deppends on the moment, sometimes I like hear techno and sometimes trance. I listen to techno since I'm 16 before to know trance and I go to clubbing at techno clubs usually (no trance clubs here).
About vinyl shops in my town you can find techno, house, happy hardcore... but not many trance (only the commercial trance like ATRC, Nothing but you... you know...), so If pick to spin trance I will have to do the command online and if I choose techno I have more alternatives and find more and rare vinyls at my shop.
Also when I hear techno sets I have the feel that the Dj do more mixes, plays more with the mixer... than in the trance sets.
Other + point more for techno is that my friends like techno and they are not really into trance but well this point don't mind, cause its my decision.
Another but too expensive way is to do 2 collections: one trance and another techno but to do this is too expensive and atm I can't.
So I'm wondering if you can tell me your experiences spinning one genre or other. What genre is more "cool", easy/difficult to spin? With wich you can mix more, play more with the mixer...?
Dunno I like both genres just deppends on the moment and I want know your Djing experiences for take one decision.
Thanks,

I have tried to spin house, psytrance, techno and DnB.
Psytrance is the most difficult in terms of choosing the right track, but it's the easiest to mix. Just beatmatch and fade away with the eq. Doesn't reward you much in terms of dj'ing enjoyment, at least in my opinion. A set is pretty much a nice flow, so you can't do turntablist tricks or cuts/fades in sound. There is not much possibility of overlay.
House is very nice to mix. It's more difficult than psytrance because it requires a bigger sense of musical harmony. You have to harmonically mix so it sounds really good. Choosing the right track is easier than in psytrance, because you can vary pretty much during the set. You can use some turntablist tricks and fx, although not much. You can overlay some 3 sources of sound.
Techno is the most enjoying DJ experience i've tried. It allows you to have multiple sources of sound (3+), like 3 turntables or more, cd players, drum machines, grooveboxes, fx units, all at the same time. It requires much more concentration though. Techno also lives more of turntablist tricks than the genres listed above, and being a good turntablist is a must for a techno dj. However, in techno is very easy to choose the next track. You can forget harmonic mixing if you want, just play a tracks which builds up/breaks up the energy (as you want it).
My experience with drum and bass is very small. This is for the hardest genre to mix, it's not easy to beatmatch. It breeds and lives of turntablist tricks, this is a priority for a DnB dj. It also allows multiple layers of sound, depending on your ability. It's the only style of these 4 where a MC is a good thing
That's it! My favourite genre is house because of the melodies and general vibe, although i get much more satisfaction from a dj's viewpoint when playing techno.

I ran into the same problem when I started. I loved listening to trance and seeing trance djs...but I loved mixing and dancing to house.
so I combine the two, I will always have a split up set...some nice trance to get started and then some bangin funky house.
just get good records to play....unless youa re trying to spin at a club somewhere...then try to get records to fit their format...
My suggestion is to buy stuff that you like. In the end you'll have to listen to these records over and over and over again. and decent sounding tracks become boring to you and you'll end up either selling them @ a lower price or just letting them collect dust. But when you start find songs that have long intro's or have simple beats so you can learn to beatmatch. and when you get down to it JUST BUY RECORDS!!! because it just takes time and money to find your true calling. I started playing uplifting trance and now I'm playing breaks/trance and house. Little bit of everything. So just buy stuff that sounds good and you won't regret buying later in your life. One of the first records I brought was Way Out West - Mindcircus. I originally brought it for the Tarrentella:Redanka mix and now I totally love the Gabriel and Dresden mix of it before I didn't cuz I thought it was too long. So just buy good songs and stuff you like.
what ever genres you like, buy. simple as that.. when i go shopping , i pick a bunch of records from everywhere.. if i only had all trance records and found a dnb record that i loved, i would def not hold back from buying that record.. my collection consists of trance, hard trance, hardstyle , uk-hardhouse/nu-nrg , trancecore/freeform, breaks , dnb and techno (mostly hard) .. my point is, you will never get bored if you have something to switch over too..

Just mix what you love. If you like the record and have the $$$ to buy it, then buy it. Start spinning unique sets with your own style.
make sure u listen a few times to the tunes.........and dont go after a big night cause perception thinks all is sounding top shelf...
Just create your own style. If you like techno record, buy it. If you find a certain trance records to be awesome, buy it. Combine the records in a set in a good way so you have your own sound
Greetings,
Blighty
when i go record shopping, i usually spend a few hours in the store and listen to a bunch of records, i buy what sounds good. i have alot of trance and prog stuff, but lately have been buying harder house and deep trance kinda stuff.
when i started spinning, none of my friends knew what trance was. but i have converted a few of them, and at least shown them how cool this music is. your friends will think whatever you spin is cool.
Thanks for the replies! very usefuls for me...
man spin whatever you want, i do trance/hiphop/house/breaks and sometimes i put rap acapellas over top of breakbeats to mix shit up.. jungle/dnb can be fun too! i just steer clear from goatrance/psytrance as it gets too fast for me to mix well, plus it sounds gay unless you are mixing it with other psytrance (which im not that big a fan of anyways)
go search through whitelabel bin at your local store, always fun to find cool cheap shit there
