Canadian visiting Australia for work / pleasure!

Hey everyone I'm headed over to your neck of the woods for about 6months-1 year for work / travel. I'm currently in New Zealand traveling around and seeing the sights. I got a working holiday visa which will let me get a job while travelling around. A couple friends of mine and I are planning on seeing some of the east coast(frasier island, whit sundays, byron bay, sydney), alice springs and maybe the perth region on the west coast.

Any suggestions of places to go and see while we're in the area?

Also, once we're done our tour around i'll be staying on to work in the country probably for 6-8months doing what I don't know. I guess i'll be looking for a place to stay in 5weeks or so either in Sydney or Melbourne and then starting to hunt for a job. Any suggestions for where to look for work / a place to stay? Maybe a cheap apartment or shared house with other people etc.

Of course, since we're all TA's here I need to know where to get my trance fix! What's it like for the trance scene in australia?

Anyways, i'll be posting here as often as I can to get to know some ppl on this board. Looking forward to hearing from some AU TA's.

Some great places are

Telopea St, Punchbowl <--Fantastic nightlife!

Bankstown Station <-- probably the best place to get Breakfast and Afternoon Tea.

Gosling Park, Greenacre <-- reknowned for the friendliness of the people and a splendid nightlife.

Greenacre Heights Park, Greenacre <- like Gosling Park but with a nice view of Buildings.

hahahahahahahahahahaha as bad as the area is, I grew up around it and got along pretty well with the locals. I now live about a block from telopea street, however more near Wiley Park, which ain't that bad.

to the traveller, anywhere in and around the city is great. I extremely enjoy the Northern beaches (Manly, Dee Why etc) people are great, really friendly and the surroundings are nothing short of breath taking. Enjoy your stay

Trance in Sydney, for uplifting and melodic is almost dead. Brands to keep an eye out for is Liberty, Halcyon, Josh and Friends, and Antlantis. For the harder styles, Gas and Sublime every Friday night are the places to go.

Musically, all the good clubs are in the city. To get the city, train or buses are fine. Taxis are pretty pricey.

Place worth seeing in Sydney, obviously the city down around Circular Quay and The Rocks is pretty amazing (down by the water and the old part of the city, the bridge and opera house are there also).

Bondi = Touristy beach, if you want some real beaches, I'll let waXology tell you, as I go to my local beach, about 30 mins drive from the city.

Going out for drinks in the city, it's a pub on every corner. A nice general location, where you'll get more of the local "classy" people is Cockle Bay. Areas just out the city that are pretty cool is/are Surry Hills, Paddington, Glebe, Balmain.

Work, www.seek.com.au MIGHT be able to help you out. I was talking to a backpaker this morning, who told me that people came to the hostel he was staying at offering people work. I'm not too sure on hostels, other then the YHA ones.

How soon are you coming over? I've got a little project to type up something a little less rushed, and more formal then this, with all the info you're going to want/need in Sydney [if you're a few weeks off, I'll make sure I finish it].

Cheers,

Thanks for all the good info, much apreciated for sure. I arrived in Sydney on the 28th of Feb and i've been staying at a hostel in Kings Cross. Nothing like walking down the street and being solisited by guys wanting you to come in and check out their stripclub or hookers asking you to take them home with you. I love the city

I'm actually only in Sydney for a couple days before my friends and I do a little traveling around the country, I should be back to make sydney my perminant residence for the next year in a month or so. I'm registered with IEP(international exchange program) and they help you find work etc. I'll be looking for a job in IT when I get back and a place to stay probably mid april. Hopefully there'll be some good trance events around that time cuz i'm starved for some since leaving home a month ago.

Most of the record shops are on Oxford Street .. to get there from the Cross, walk back up William St to the city, then turn left onto College St (just before Hyde Park), and follow that to Oxford Street.

If you've lead a slightly sheltered life, be prepared for an eye-opening on Oxford Street, especially this weekend hehe

Posted by rahvin on Mar-05-2004 01:12:

Well, just left Sydney and came to Byron Bay. God damn this place is ALL backpackers. I actually want to get back to Sydney ASAP hehe. When my funds start running out in about 3 weeks or so i'll be back.

Thanks for the info on the record shops, i'll definatly check them out when I get back. What's it like for DJ's in Sydney anyways? I've played out several times in Toronto and it'd kick ass to drop a set in Sydney. Do you guys have TA events or do you just go out and hit a club together?

Oxford St is where the gay parade is going to be right? Toronto has a huge gay community to, so I don't think i'd be that shocked.

A word on hot backpackers, THERE'S TONS! My god, seems like every place I stay at all I can think of is sex Not just europeans but lots of brits, americans and canadians to! The place i'm staying at in Byron bay is filled with gorgeous women, but then there's all the surfer bums walking around hitting on all them
