About $3498 in Aussie terms

it's the basic one they sell them with, the main reason im looking at this one is cos the company has a buy now pay in 6 months thing and then u can pay monthly, pay more, but for people on tiny budgets like myself, would come in quite handy. You can upgrade to 17" but remember how far behind the UK is in things, like so many exchanges that can't even get ADSL Net yet

Ram Wise i'd be tempted to ask for 2gigs, but I'm not sure how flexible they are, definitely the kinda system I wanna be looking at tho, atm im running an AMD Athlon 1000mhz and 384mb ram (added 256 a while back) but the system is 3 years old and some now, so it's served me well, only one hdd died on me too, just seems time to look for something to last a long time again into the future (damn my 14" monitor from my old 486 surely has to go

Defo worthy of drooling.

f'n hell

Posted by whiskers on Feb-26-2004 03:08:

jesus, what the farking hell do you want 2 gigs of ram for???

Processor - AMD Athlon 64 FX-51 Processor ($746.00US)

gets good ratings, beats intel 3.2ghz...

Memory - 1024MB DDR RAM (2x 512MB)

depending on what you want to do, that's about enough. compared to the rest of your configuration, it's a bit skimpy. what brand is it?

Hard Disk - 400GB 7200 RPM ATA-100 Drive (2x200GB)

that's probably WAY more than enough even for a massive leecher.

Graphics - 256MB ATi Radeon 9800 XT Graphics ($461.00 US)

hmmmm.... are you planning on getting 200FPS in video games?

Monitor - 15" TFT Flat Panel Monitor

a 15" monitor is pretty small

Sound - 6 Channel Sound Onboard

be careful with this. what motherboard is it? most of the time onboard stuff can be pretty sketchy... unless you have ASUS A7N8X deluxe, like i do, which has a 5.1 dolby digital encoder or what the fuck ever onboard.

chip + hard drives + graphics card + memory + monitor = 1,199.56 GBP

add the software + keyboard / speakers + motherboard and i suppose that adds up to 1,500

i'd say it's a bit too much, unless you're a hardcore gamer / overclocker.

where did you find it?

Posted by DJ Lac on Feb-26-2004 03:19:

might as well get a 46 hdtv with a dvi output and hook your system up to with a 700 watt surround sound system. Only if I can find a nice long dvi cable I would lol.. my comp is far from the tv. would have used that to extend my gaming

Posted by DigiNut on Feb-26-2004 03:37:

It's not bad, but for that price I don't think it's anything special. Especially since they don't list brands for stuff like the memory or hard drives, it could be cheap shit.

Also keep in mind that the Athlon FX is a ripoff - it's designed for "cinematic computing" and costs literally $500 more than a faster regular Athlon 64.

Here are the *ordinary* individual prices of those parts, in CDN:

Athlon 64 FX 5.1: $1000
or: Athlon 64 3400+: $560

Asus SK8N Mobo for FX: $285
or: Asus K8V Deluxe for 64: $188

4x DVD writer: obsolete now but my friend just got one for $80

Radeon 9800XT: $600 (but why... get the pro 128 for $360)

Samsung 512MB DDR400 RAM x2: $234
WD 7200rpm 200 GB HD x2: $400
16x DVD-ROM: $40
Modem: $20
15" flat panel: $380
LAN, Firewire, Ports: On motherboard
Floppy: $10
Keyboard, Mouse, Speakers: $100 max
Case: $50
Cables, fans, miscellaneous stuff: $30
Software: Free

Total: $3229 for top-of-the-line, $2452 if you bust it down to the 3200+ and the 128 MB video card. Which, in your UK pounds at the current exchange rate should come out to 1288 or 978.

So dude, at best you're breaking even (assuming 16% VAT) and at worst you're getting totally ripped. Those new parts like the AMD FX and Radeon XT aren't worth the money yet, but even if you wanted them, you still aren't saving money on this "deal".

And these are just using ordinary retail part prices, not wholesale or OEM, which the company offering this deal is surely getting them at.

Ripoff...

Big thanks to Drew & Digi for input

To be honest, this is exactly what I need to know, cos I am going to need value for money, but also parts that work, I'm going to continue looking around but stores like thats from (tiny) rarely gives brands as far as I know for things. if I find any similar configs, will post them later today for you all to run over ta

it was the 'highest spec' on the site.. might goto build one myself (some sites let us do that) and see how much I can spend getting a similar one with diff parts & brands
