Avalon NYC

Ok, i have been there about 5 times. It is an average club. The sound is ok, the lighting is not special. The people that go there 99.9% are just looking for some ass. I dont know what people see that is soo special about it. Every one asks why these big djs like to spin at arc and roxy, instead of avalon and crobar. Ive never been to crobar. But avalon has a shitty croud, it wouldnt be my top choice for djs to spin there. What are your opinions...

I think you might be too young to remember Limelight
That is what makes it special to many ppl.

It certainly seems to be unique as a venue, being in a former church

Posted by sandstorm03 on Feb-26-2004 20:53:

OK, i will give you that, i was to youg to go to limelight/twilo... And if you want to see what they are now, that is cool. But thats not a good reason to have big djs at spirit/avalon

i only been to avalon once so far when ferry was there in nov and back then it took me forever to get in, you had to come with girls or buy bottles and all that bullshit and about 70% of the crowd was a "look at me" kinda crowd very trendy and would look at u and what you were wearin when you walked by very uncomfortable i feel.
people told me the crowd has changed its a more musically inclined crowd so i hope it is
but i agree id rather go to arc or roxy where made events is doing the party and not have to worry about a guestlist, table service or bring girls to get in
i dont go to clubs to be social and check out the scene lol sorry thats not me i go for music to dance and chill with some trance addicts

imo i dont think the # girls going with you anymore matters to them... so that shouldnt be a problem.

Ive only been to Avalon once for Sasha on NYE and I had a blast. Sasha threw down what people will say "one of his sickest sets ever." This saturday will be my second time @ Avalon. I like clubs that have dress codes cause that usually keeps the scum away. Don't get me wrong, im all about the music and a good time but a bummy ass t-shirt, crappy jeans, and tennis shoes imo is not the appropriate 'club gear' if you wanna put it that way. I didn't have a problem with the crowd @ Avalon even though about three people came up to me and asked me who was spinning lol. They were all nice and polite. You guys should come to Pittsburgh and hit up some of the Hip Hop clubs where you look at somebody wrong and the next thing you know, your in a fight against 15 frat brother.

Where the DJ's play probably has more to do with the relationship between them (and/or their mgmt) and the promoters and/or ppl who work for the clubs.
I read something about Sasha doing NYE there because of his ties with the mgmt at Avalon Boston (who bought the place that is now Avalon NYC).
And some DJ's like spinning at certain places.
Then again, it might be all about the money.

I haven't heard of a DJ turning down a gig because of the venue, at least around here

also, it's a favorite club for at least 1 DJ
http://www.groovanauts.com/board/ar...p?article_id=80
(and he has spun at Roxy and has been at Arc)

Ferry deff has much love for Glow and DC.
Four of the six clubs Ferry likes to play at the most, are in the Unites States....thats just sick!!!

different ppl go to clubs for different reasons
I think Avalon targets a wide audience, giving something for everyone there
I'm sure some ppl like having the hip-hop room as an option, for example

Posted by sandstorm03 on Feb-26-2004 21:57:

avalon doesnt have much of a dress code

Those were the fucking days !

Limelight would of topped Twilo if it had a better crowd and didnt close at 5 am I used to hate that so much.

Posted by trancEyes22 on Feb-26-2004 22:23:

i LOVED avalon. i thought it felt so....historic being there since it was the old limelight. and i have never even been to limelight, but the feeling you get in there makes it special, ya know? i went there once on new years eve with sasha and it was one of the best nights ever. i thought everyone was gonna be pretentious and not know anything about the music, but the people were SO friendly and went buck wild to every song sasha dropped. i can't wait to go back there again!!!

Worm Popper Re: Avalon NYC

Haven't been to Avalon NYC yet, but been to Limelight a few times and it didn't impress me, probably because I pictured it a lot bigger for some reason when I first went. Anyways, I wouldn't mind checking out what Avalon's done to the place, but I haven't been intrested to go there yet. But people should just be happy that good DJ's are coming through at all, and not complain where there getting booked, just be happy that you get to see so much talent.

IMO, Avalon in Boston is the same way...

Posted by RS22b on Feb-26-2004 23:02:

yeah i definitly dont enjoy the crowd that is there on a normal basis. ppl getting on the floor and just standing there or ppl pushing you, the one who is dancing, so they can get to the otherside of the floor

But when there is a big dj there such as ferry you dont really get that.

Posted by sandstorm03 on Feb-26-2004 23:18:

yea boston's crowd sucks a lot, i like avalon boston more though

Posted by VanFleet on Feb-27-2004 00:42:

sandstorm03, I agree with you about Avalon. Its not a great venue. Its medium size, but when they have a big named DJ. You can barely move in there on the main floor.

Posted by RaVeRSurGe_NYTA on Feb-27-2004 00:54:

i've been been there many times.... CROWD SUX!!! (most of the time.... once in a while there will be some cool people.... and those nights that many TAs showup its the best .... club is a very very nice club... I HATE DRESS CODE!!! so as a result i dislike avalon... which limits me to really liking only about arc, roxy, exit, raves, and vic's loft ^_^ Thank god for vics loft

Posted by Aya Brea on Feb-27-2004 01:02:

I like Avalon. I know it's kind of small but it's still a really nice club. I went there for Hybrid and the crowd was good except for the group of psychos in front of me who were definitely on like five different kinds of drugs. They kept bumping into me/stepping on me. But still, I don't think its a shit club and the people who work the lines/tickets/coat check are really nice as well, atleast when I went. That kind of thing is important to me.

And yes lee, we know you like Avalon boston better.

that's not a bad thing
besides, the music is great anyway on account of the djs...the only thing i don't particularly like is the fact that it gets too crowded at times where it becomes hard to dance and move through the crowd

...but i guess that's natural in virtually every nyc club when a famous dj comes to spin there

There's nothing wrong with a t-shirt, jeans, and sneakers. This isn't a corporate office brotha.
