Ortofon Nightclub vs. DJ?

ok i am getting a set of Ortofon carts to repace my shitty ass Stanton 500-II. I am debating between the concord DJs, and the concord nightclubs. its gonna be spherical syli either way. any recomendations?

one more thing, this is a thread about Ortofons, i know alot of people in here would have sex with their whitelabels if they could, but i dont want to hear about it. im not hating, i have spun with both Ortofons and Whitelabels and just prefer the Ortofons.

Thanks everybody.

Phil

I would go with the Concorde Nightclub... I have issues with Ortofon though... After awhile, connectivity with the 1200's is lost... I suggest using the headshell version better...

I believe they have re-engineered them to fix this issue. They 4 little metal tips that connect in the tone arm used to be straight. This caused connectivity problems over time if the carts where taken on and off a lot. Now they use a rounded metal nubs instead.

On a related note, if you are having connectivity issues avoid the temptaion to lick the metal plugs. This is only a temporary solution that will only speed the corrosion process. Try cleaning them with alcohol or something (not beer but rubbing alcohol).

On to the recommendation. I have a friend who had nightclubs and really loved them. He has since gotten Whitelables and now misses his nightclubs so I think you are doing the right thing. I have another friend who uses the DJ S and loves them. On the huge Ortofon thread awhile ago on futureproducers an Ortofon engineer was saying that the differences between them are really small and it is more a matter of personal preference rather then better specs. Therefore I would try them both out if you can.

I currently use the silver ones and am going to get the DJ S because I hear they are great (and they are cheaper than the nightclubs).

A dj i work with extensively swears by the Dj S and i swear by the nightclub S. Both are awesome.

The main difference is the stylus tip is smaller on the Nightclub.
Personally i find the luminous stylus a bit better (especially at clubs with broken cue lights on the turntables)
Replacement nightclub stylus are slightly more expensive, but not a vast amount.

I also think the nightclubs look better.
oh yes and ive seen pvd using nightclubs in the past (well im sure someone will buy them purely on that basis.)

www.ortofon.com for the specs of the stylus.

You wont go wrong with either

I'm also considering Ortofons, does anyone know any online sites that have good prices on them? Aside from ebay. . .

I have the nightclub S's CC, and I think that they are great sounding stylii.

I am acutally curious to see opinions from people that have used the elektro's.

I am an OM freak, so that's what I have.

I have the DJ-S mounted on Tech M3D headshells.

I guess it really depends on your budget. Me, I just happen to like the DJ-S.

only the needle is different, and yeah you can put a nightclub needle on a pro dj s shell. cheaper too.

Whats the cheapest price i could find for a pair of DJ S's

Posted by wiregen on Mar-02-2004 07:17:

i have both DJ s and nightclub series, truthfully i see no difference but i use the nightclub at the club i dj at and i use DJs at the studio at home

Posted by MERiDiAN5i2 on Mar-03-2004 16:59:

your decision should be made based on

a) which one is cheaper
b) does blue or yellow look cooler?

because otherwise, your experience will be the same, mostly.

One DJ i know did a blind test comparing the Ortofons with the Whitelabels. He determined that the ortofons were better sounding that the whitelabels. Anyone else have a valid opinion on this?

ALso, is it fact that Ortofon fixed the connection problem with the tonearm?

Posted by Dj Thy on Mar-03-2004 18:30:

The difference between Ortofons and Shures is mostly a personal taste.

The Ortofons have a "rounder" bass, and a light rolloff in the high frequencies, while the Whitelabels have more tight mids, and go pretty strong in the hi freqs. Some people prefer that slightly "warmer" sound (including me) and thus prefer the Orto's. Other people might have a slight preference for that "harsher" sound, so they will opt for the Whitelabels.
In this league of quality, there really is no one better than the other.

Yes, Ortofon changed the connections. The old style used flat connectors, which tend to push back the internal tonearm connectors, but only if you removed the cartridge a lot (so for most people this doesn't really pose a problem, even then, most people that had probs was because the tonearm nut was loose, so it was more of a TT problem). The classic trick was to put one of those rubber rings (like you find on the standard Technics headshells) on the connector inset.
The new style has the round connectors (again, like on the standard headshells), and they are a bit shorter.

Obviously, this only apply to Concordes, as the OM's use an apart headshell.

My Nightclub Es arrived yesterday and they are simply fantastic! The sound quality is superb, producing a punchy warm bass. They seem to require a little more weight than my Stantons did, but then again, they are only new and Ill be able to relax the weight and anti-skate when theyve broken in. Considering that elliptical styli are supposed to have a harder time staying in the groove, they stick to the record like glue! Heres how they are setup at the moment.

Weight: 3
Anti-Skate: 3
Height: 0

A sound purchase!
