young djs: how did you do it?

how did you stumble across the cash to snab your first decks?

im currently 16, i love the art, but dont have my own setup, and been trying to put pieces of money together since im 14. my parents have always had a no allowance policy, and no lunch money, and no money to go out, and nada. basically, i get 3 meals a day and my bed, if i want something extra, thats my problem. in a way, it had really taught me the value of money, not like most kids my age that just throw it away. i dont really have transportation, and i live in a suburb of sorts, so i cant really get a job. true, there were ZERO vinyl shops or music related shops that had ANYTHING to do with electronica what so ever till just last friday (first record store opened, woohoo!) so it was a bit harder before, now it wont be so much.

the store doesnt carry gear, but the owner is very cool and said he could hook me up with a pair of used techs for $170 US, i was free to test them out before paying, so thats quite a deal. still, i'd need a mixer, but thats another ballgame.

so, tell me about your experiences to get cash, odd jobs you did, that time you sold crack to buy yourself an Allen&Heath, etc etc :P

well, i broke a deal with my parents. i bought my gear in september, and my birthday is in october. So the deal was no birthday or christmas presents, and i have to pay half of the total money paid back to them. when i bought the gear i owed them 900 USD, now i owe them about 500 USD.

Posted by Inertia on Mar-01-2004 01:57:

nice... but please, be explicit, describe it all, what you told them, what gear it is, whether is was worth the hard work/conning/stealing, etc :P

dunno why, i enjoy reading this type of stuff... hehe

I sold off a lot of stuff. My bass guitar, for one thing. And I still haven't bought the second turntable.

Posted by NinetyNinety on Mar-01-2004 02:31:

I saved and saved, and sold my drum kit, my bass, and other stuff. I bought a TT and a mixer, and I use my lap top as the other TT..

your best bet is to kill your parents and end all your troubles + claim the insurance money!

sold a 68 fender strat on ebay for 4k

Posted by `pr0digy on Mar-01-2004 03:14:

I bought two used Tech m3d's off ebay, total was over $600. Parents payed for one deck (christmas present), and I owe them for the other. Bought my mixer for $200 used on ebay, paid for it myself. Got some records for my b-day (just came in too ).

Posted by raaven on Mar-01-2004 03:34:

i started when i was 17

i got a job, worked hard and saved my money

my first set up was lower end stuff and then i upgraded to tech's some 5 months or so later and sold off the other equip.

Find a job and work it to death. Its all about the sacrifices you want to make, I'm 17 and have a $1000 record collection and a $800 turntable setup. Its all about how badly you want it.

Posted by Boomer187 on Mar-01-2004 04:01:

actually I got a kick ass job making $15/hour. so living at home the money piled up...

I bought the decks/mixer/phones/ and a oile o 10 records with a few checks....

but then school started and I am broke...so I don't have so many records.

Posted by Zombie0729 on Mar-01-2004 05:29:

i had a paper route when i was 9 for 5 years and i saved 5,000$...

dude get a job, you are living at home, you have to cash in on that asap!

I paid for all of it with money from working, and thats how I afford records too.

well my first "setup" was actually an old Grundig record player, no pitch just a player, and for the other deck I used an old record player from the top of a midi stereo system, and for my mixer......a minidisc player, don't ask how, but hey I was like 12 at the time, so that setup was free, for my next setup I bought an N64 and within a couple months I swapped it with a friend of a friend for his old beaten Soundlab decks, and only god knows mixer (I THINK it was Kam), so that was in a way free, but I was happy with it.....until I used Techs, then the sadness of how crap my setup was set in....forever.
Oh I'm cured now, I got Techs.

You forgot to mention the part about your Gemini XL-500's, and your PIMPIN sandwich holder(Gemini PMX-60 mixer)....

Then again my setup right now consists of Gemini Products... but they are much better decks and 1000000000000X better mixer.. LMAO

Oh yea.. I cut a deal with my parents to get decks and whatnot... and seeing how it is 1am I don't feel like diving into the actually deal.. plus, my financial standing isn't really any of your business...

Cheers.

PS: I have had a few bevvies..

i sold my body for sex.

I got my first set from my sisters friend, an old pair of soundlab dlp 1600's or something and an old 2 channel mixer.

My parents live in the middle east so when i was on holiday i brought a suitcase of smokes back and sold them for a massive profit which i then spent on a set of technics sl1200 mk2's. I saved up the rest for my DJM 600.

i know how that feels about school and not being able to buy vinyl!!!!

i'm lucky i have a lot as it is (been playing for well over 4 years now) but over the last few months especially my buying habits have been minimized. this happened the same time last year. lol

lol, cig smuggling... I personally was thinking of buying a book and selling that, if you cut that up you can make like $7,000.

well basically, I had one of those plugs so you can plug 2 minijacks into one socket, and so I did that and turned on the record on the minidisc, and left it on pause, and well thats pretty much it, no EQs, no Faders, No Nothing, kids these days, they got everything, not like back in my day .
But thats basically it, I was new into this scene, none of my friends were into it, I didn't know where to look for info, I had to just make do with whatever I made up in my mind, and this was awesome for the time, plus I didn't know what a mixer really was then, oh the joys of bein a kid.

EDIT: and like what DJLazy said, yea before I got my Techs, when we moved here, like a year later, my parents bought me 2x Gemini XL500s and a Gemini PMX60 Mixer, I wanted better at the time, but hey, they were tryin there best, bless there little hearts, they just didn't know about Techs, so umm I guess that makes them free aswell, so the first 3 setups I had were free, not to shabby.
