progressive , love it? hate it?
Hello again people, I was wondering what is your opinion about progressive trance? I started to like it way back in october last year when Nicholas Bennison, D:Fuse and some others cama to spin live to my hometown. I thought it was like a new trend or something but I was Mistaken, but whwnever some progrssive tracks or livesets have been posted I see that the rankings are low, Why don't many people like it? or if you like it why do you like it?
Thanx!
I don't like it.
I've been listening to epic/uplifting/hard for quite some time, and NEVER felt the urge to switch to boring progressive.
PvD is the only progressive i have ever really liked, i usually play it when my girlfriend is over because its slow and she cant handle hard house yet.
Love it
Love it! Infact, its what I spin...amazing stuff.
same here eugene. always been an uplifting fan, never liked progressive. doesnt provide as much energy for me. dont like progressive. in fact pvd's progressive doesnt appeal to me. its too chill out.
All trance is great, even progressive....
I like Bedrock, Way Out West and Sander Kleinenberg.
i agree with eugene and trance control. progressive just doesn't hit the spot for me. i'm just a sucker for uplifting/epic trance.
I love it. I like the ambient its puts me in, kinda chilled, and it tranceports me way more than uplifting, that doesnt means i dont like uplifting, i love it too.
por cierto Daffer, donde vivies? D.F.?

What's wrong with Digweed's sound? He's starting to sound even more evil these days
Old Sasha stuff rules. I think epic/uplifting is great but sometimes the intro/peak/breakdown routine gets a bit tired and stops meaning anything. That's when I like to plug in some prog and go on a little journey.
What I don't like is when people say that epic/uplifting is "not deep enough." It's VERY deep. When, after a break in the beat, the sounds of synth emerge and swirl all around you, preparing you for a journey of fantastic colors, and the energy blazes all through your body -- from head down to toes, that's a deep psychological experience!
I agree it can be tiring if there's too much of it, but... it's equally, if not more, deep than the tribal and minimalist sounds that you call "deep progressive." Just my opinion.
Love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think its Soft techno with a tune. I love it....
it puts me more into a trance than trance hehe
well i like Max Graham (Transport 4)and DJ Tiesto's (Revolution) progressive records that they play. But i bought Bedrock mixed by Jimmy Van M and I thought the cd fucking sucked ass!!!

I usually end all my sets (no matter what they are) with a progressive tune... its a great wind-down genre, and great chillin' music.
i wouldn't vote it as the best floorfiller, but definitely got something going on here

The new genre of "Progressive" is a combination of Progressive House and deeper slower Progressive Trance. Epic/Uplifting Trance is STILL considered Progressive Trance, it's just the opposite end of the spectrum. At least that's the impression I've have.
Hmmm.... Everyone seems to forget about Progressive HOUSE, they THINK it's trance (slow boring trance), but really it's usually Progressive HOUSE. At least that's what most of what Digweed spins is considered, for instance.

well..do I like progressive? depends on what I want to do. HH, epic and Nu NRG I can dance to...Prog, I cant, but when im chilling, prog is EXACTLY what I want to listen to!!
Aight .. to me, progressive can fit good on the beggining of a set, but played after 2-3 hours .. will totally get people on to sleep, then getting onto the 12 AM , epic/upliftinc and hard trance is what its all about .
I dont know, it may be me, or my local area, buuut, lately, I been hearing those 99 uplifting trance tracks been played once again, after the 1-2 year retirement of the tracks, now Im hearing them again ... I dont know if its just me, or its really happening. I've also read that trance is still big, bigger then HH in the UK, no matter what everyone says, and Sasha Playing Xpander on the Summer Sound System this yr.. was 1 of the tunes that caused Chaos .. so .. I dont know. Uplifting and Epic trance will always be my favorite, andhopefully better stuff from it will come out, there's also some good Progressive Uplifting trance .. Planisphere - Monnshine Part B is perfect example . So .. like I said, fits good on just the begginings , but no more then 2 hrs, cause then it will drop.
i am not exactly clear yet on the different genres, so can someone give me a few examples of what would be considered prog.? i know there have been some, but there is a lot of disagreementso...
I made a pretty long definition of progressive music a while back, dunno if anyone wants to dig it out, but I can't be arsed to try defining it again......
Um, personally I love the stuff. It covers such a large range of music, but it's all based on the same principle of minimilisation and a rebellion away from the less subtle genres of uplifting trance and hard house, which have, so far as I'm concerned, got very old, very fast. Progressive is what trance is evolving to (slowly), which may not be a reality that some of you like, but the only way that trance is going to survive is to keep on evolving. Most people are already weary of that uplifting, high-energy trance that dominated the clubs of 98/99, because the scene became too polluted by commercialism and unoriginality, and grew stale. Progressive is the natural step away from these genres which have already had their time in the spot-light, and towards a more subtle, underground sound of "intelligent" prog music.
For those of you who find it boring? Well, I guess there's not much I can do to change your mind if that's how you feel, but try going to a club and listening to a decent dj play it. It is absolutely perfect to dance to: dominant beat and it never lets up. You can just keep on dancing away in a "trance" because it just keeps on building, where as with contemporary trance it's usually a very stop-start affair because of the build-ups.
Anyway, just my opinion. Each to their own I guess.
Okay, I dug up my definition of progressive myself:
First post:
Well I think that the term progressive refers more to the nature of the genre, rather than the actual musical aspects of it. That is, the music has progressed beyond trance and house, it is the future of music, the direction in which music is heading, it is more progressive in the everyday sense of the word than all the other genres of music.
Besides that, I could argue that the music does sound as though it's progressing somewhere anyway. Listen to a beat from a true progressive track: it always sounds like it's going somewhere, it sounds relentless. Same with the music in general actually - it just keeps on going and going, building and building, even if it doesn't peak or trough like in most other genres of music it's still got a definate direction (even though some would argue that it's flat and constant, I think that even though it is subtle, the track is always building and has definate "progression").
And that's what makes progressive so captivating to me. The fact that it just keeps on coming (way-hey) and doesn't let down. I've said it before and I'll say it again, but you have to learn how to detect all this because it's a very subtle form of music, but, at the same time, that's what makes it so satisfying to listen to.
Anyway, I've gone way off track as usual. Hope I've answered your question?
Second Post:
Oh yeah, one more thing.
If "progressive" simply meant that the music "progressed" and had a logical sequence from beginning to end, then you could throw just about any song ever written into this category.
Thus, even though I am unaware of where the term came from, I can only assume that progressive originated not from describing what the music was doing (i.e. progressing from beginning to end with logical succession) but describing the direction that this specific genre of music was taking culturally (i.e. it was progressing beyond all other genres of electronic music).
Feel free to tell me if you think I'm talking cod-shit, but this is just what I understand progressive music to be.
i hated progressive before i heard pvd live..it changed the way i look at music for sure...ever since i heard pvd live..i love listenin to progressive..although i prefer uplifting and hard tracks..
Here we go again. I'll repeat my thing on it from a few months ago:
Alright,
Having been into Prog House for an eternity, here's the score:
'Progressive' started with 'Progressive House'. Prog House started in the early / mid-90s as:
1. Being a 'progression' from the vocal / deep house that existed before then, with less vocals, often none at all
2. Being high energy, uplifting (like all house music was at the time).
3. Having some similarities to prog rock, from the early 80s (also, moving, uplifting, and progressing to a point)
They both meant the same thing to people then and Sasha + Digweed, Paul Oakenfold, and BT played similar sets, believe it or not.
Examples (Played by Oakie, Sasha, Digweed and BT):
Billy Ray Martin - Put Your Lovin Arms (1994) [Vocals]
BT - Loving You More (1995) [Vocals + Uplifting Synths]
Sasha and Maria - Be As One (1995) [Vocals + Uplifting Synths]
Grace - Not Over Yet (1995) [Vocals + Uplifting Synths]
Libra Presents Taylor - Anomaly (Calling Your Name) (1995) [Vocals + Uplifing Synths]
Faithless - Salva Mea (1995) [Vocals + Uplifting Synths]
BT - Flaming June (1997) [Uplifting Synths]
Armin Van Buuren - Blue Fear (1997) [Deep Synths]
This lead to it splitting in two around 1996-97, when I really got into it. On one side was Epic Trance, on another side was Progressive House.
Binary Finary - 1998 (1997) [Epic Trance]
Paul Van Dyk - For An Angel (1997)[Epic Trance]
Deep Dish - The Future Of The Future (1998)[Progressive House]
Push - Universal Nation (1999) [Epic Trance]
Breeder - Twilo Thunder (1999) [Progressive House]
Since that, Epic Trance has become less epic, smarter and more uplifting [Tiesto's the decendent of all that], and Prog House has gotten increasiningly less uplifting and more and more minimal (or subtle, as some people would say)
Prog Trance is based on the same minimalism, just applied to trance.
Bottom line: everyone keeps on going back to the original definition of 'progressive', when its evolved to a whole new sound. That's why it's confusing.
Hope this helps.
