You were expecting the same Ishkur that totally shit on trance in his "Guide to Electronic Music" to have something good to say about Tiesto in Concert?

Posted by chinaboy1021 on Mar-02-2004 08:33:

Rank 1 - Airwave isn't trance?

yeah, ok

Posted by Dmatrox on Mar-02-2004 08:38:

many parts of the article i do agree with.

the dvd gets boring to watch and its much better to listen to and watch the vocalists and the extra footage.

im a big fan of tiesto and i liked the dvd. I think they should have included the 8 hour set in audio format at least, instead of just giving us the 3 hours.

its his opinion.. plus he can back his opinion up with the cookie cutter explanation... can you back up your reasoning why it is trance?

If a shower curtain were draped around the decks, would people even be able to tell it was Tiesto playing? Tiesto is not a DJ. He is an attention whore who has done a really good job marketing himself as a DJ. He is a businessman selling himself as a DJ. He is a rock star under the guise of a DJ. But he is not a DJ.

hahaha dont get me wrong I still like him

and in some cases, being in the right places at the right times...

I agree with him. That DVD is terrible, for exactly the reasons ishkur lays out. And as I have said before, calling Airwave "not trance" does Trance music a huge favor. I have been a huge fan of trance for many years but that overblown anthem junk nearly drove me away at one point.

Posted by mikefasssy on Mar-02-2004 09:18:

I'd have to agree, that dvd was really, really, really gay. I ended up watching ~10 minutes (skipping through hoping something more interesting was going to come on) before deleting it.

I don't really like the idea of a concert either, I for sure wouldn't want to hear one dj, one style, one sound for a hella long time. That's the beauty of the usual ~3 hour headline sets, long enough for you to go nuts but short enough to leave you wanting more (for next time).

my 2 cents

Caleb

ya know i'm open to many opinions but when you said hella i completly rejected your argument. sorry, but that word is looked down upon so much here.

While I might complain about some of the trance classifications that Ishkur employs, this review is spot on. I've always felt Tiesto is a good producer. But he is a poor DJ who has shamelessly taken fame and run with it, much to the chagrin of some trance listeners. I, for one, find it embarrassing that the music I love has been reduced to this empty idolatry

Everyone who isn't buying the image is waiting for Tiesto to do an Oakenfold. The bloated fame can only last so long.

Posted by Cobalt on Mar-02-2004 09:41:

And seriously, to anyone who makes this chronic mistake: if you fail to understand Ishkur's "Not Trance" category, you just don't get it. Quiet yourself until you do. I'm plain sick and tired of the ignorant whining.

Someone should send the author of that article some MDMA and a ticket to see Tiesto live and then have him tell us what he thinks of Tiesto afterwards!!! :rolling:

I actually think he's a better DJ than producer. In terms of technicality he's one of the better well known DJs, but lately he has fallen somewhat compared to his older stuff

Posted by TranceGiant on Mar-02-2004 10:56:

This article is bullshit. Ishkur doesn't even have the brains to realize those 3 hours are only a summary of a 8 hour long event. And how can he judge if people really danced and enjoyed themselves if he wasnt even there

Did you know that the rolleyes smiley instantly makes your post have relevant substance?

(Yep, definitely in a cynical mood.)

I agree on that last part. His older mixes are better technically speaking, even though I like the substance of his newer mixes more.

He never particularly had a great knack at set structure, a flaw I'm willing to overlook given other strengths. But it seems that after about 2001 he started forgetting how to beatmatch too. Last I checked that was a prerequisite for the whole "Superstar DJ" thing.

a) Comparing Ishkur to a trance listener with campy, unfounded allegiance or hatred to certain artists or DJs is incorrect and indicates to me that you haven't understood any of his reasoning. Campy, unfounded allegiance or hatred to certain genres, on the other hand...

b) He does know the "facts," whatever those are.

c) Ishkur is a critic of electronic music. Critics, by definition, critique. Film critics put out negative reviews of poor movies, in addition to positive reviews of good movies, because they are critics.

As someone else might say, "get a clue."
