Why is there so many shootings in Toronto?

2004 has started off a bad. I dont see why
people have to emulate the united states in
terms of guns and violence. However bad it
may be in toronto, people dont seem to realize
that even people living in poverty here, are
better off than people living in poverty in
the states. For instance buffalo's ghetto
is probably ten times worse than torontos.
So the question is why are people so dumb
in that they need guns.

because there are alot of people who deserve to get shot?

Media attention + A few untimely incidents = public hysteria

That doesn't make me feel better that two people got shot up while waiting at a traffic light in rush hour.

It's unfortunate, but considering the crime rate has been steadily declining since 1990 (minus 1999-2000), all this media attention and public attention is really unnecessary

And how often do people get shot at a traffic light during rush hour? Obviously this isn't a normal occurence, but it did happen. Thats life though. Anything can happen at anytime. Worrying about it isn't gonna make it any better.

it's all about the scarborough massives !!!

Posted by Time2Burn on Mar-07-2004 01:05:

I'm not exactly trying to make you feel better.. just stating facts. These things (shootings) happen all the time and its only when the media makes a big deal of when people take notice. Not necessarily a bad thing but there should be more public outcry about guns in general. Bottom line they should be banned.

But comments like "why are the so many shootings in TO?" bother me cause it is buying into hysteria. Go south of the border see how many gunshops there are... Canada isn't even close. Thank god.

Crime, or violent crime?
Gun crime?
Homicides?

Violent crime and homicides. Gun crimes have been on the rise, yes, but it's not such a boom that we should be barricading our doors and going outside only when it's absolutely necessary.

I didn't suggest that we should do that.
However, gun crimes on the rise at all is something to worry about. Media = public attention = pressure on politicians. Can you say that's a bad thing?

I'm not saying you said so yourself, but often while on the subway I overhear people saying things like "whats this world coming to" "nowadays i'm afraid to let my son/daughter to go outside at night because of all the crimes".

Sure, it's ok to worry, but many people are under the impression that Toronto is turning into Brooklyn or something, when it's simply not true. Toronto, and Canada, are one of the safest places in the world, and have been for some time.

As for pressure on politicians; well you're right. Pressure is always good. But I'd rather see some pressure on them related to issues that need attention, not something thats on a steady decline.

Do something about the damn highway traffic problems, for example. Or about the freakin pot-holes on the 401 and every single street in the city. Or take care of the insurance companies.

^^ You're kidding, right?
Potholes deserve more attention that violent crime?

Yes, Toronto is one of the safer cities in the world, but that's a relative measurement...if every other city is getting progressively (hah, I said progressive ) more violent, that doesn't say squat about how safe our streets are.

I agree, sometimes these things consume the media for days. But I don't see how that's such a horrible thing. Think of all the other crap news they cover....what good is going to come of covering that news instead of violent crime?

I think you're taking that way out of context. I'm not saying that a ruined car because of a pothole is more tragic than another dead body, but why should we continue complaining about the crime rate if it's already going down? If anything, focus more on the unsolved crimes.

Potholes were just an example

you may say its not bad, but when you cant open a daily without somebody being murdered overnight, then something is wrong.

Posted by Vivid Boy on Mar-07-2004 03:32:

please theres nothing wrong...and crimes are not on the rise..maybe tto you ppl cause u have been sheltered from them but when i was a kid ill tell u i saw alot more fucked up things then i do now... infinity is right...the media is just focusing on it...go to the states..thats fuckin ghetto..

Posted by Cyrus King on Mar-07-2004 08:40:

im with skipper on this one.

By comparing our city to the world isnt going to help improve the local problem at hand.

Although crime is declining... GUN VIOLENCE has increased..and that worries me.

I think that bringing more attention about this issue will highlight the need for stricter gun laws.

Media hype is sometimes beneficial!

I completely agree with you on this....why do you think theres so much news about it?? because it's happening so much more now....before, it wasnt happening so often, so when it did, there wasnt that much of a fuss over it BECAUSE it wasnt that often. Now, its just getting out of hand...apparently at Malvern, 4 students have died last semester alone from violent crime...if thats "NOT BAD" then theres something wrong with you

Well, it's not that it is actually happening so much more now, but rather, it's the media awareness of these incidents is skyrocketing. It's even worse in the US. If you watch the style of a local New York station, compared with CityTV, you'll notice that there's always violent crime occuring. That is what they focus on. There is always crime occuring. How it's being filtered is changing.

This is no excuse

for murder. Just for perspective, TO's crime statistics would be the envy of any major american city.

Dancing Dude

there aren't as many shootings here as there is in DC///

Dallas

the shooting apart.

there's at least 1 subway suicide a month.. this is a statistic back from 1990 and it happens a lot more in toronto. most of the time if there's a subway delay, someone took their life.
