Audioscrobbler Overview
http://www.audioscrobbler.com/about.php
Audioscrobbler is a computer system that builds up a detailed profile of your musical taste. After installing an Audioscrobbler Plugin, your computer sends the name of every song you play to the Audioscrobbler Server.

With this information, the Audioscrobbler server builds you a 'Musical Profile'. Statistics from your Musical Profile are shown on your Audioscrobbler User Page, available for everyone to view.

How is my privacy protected?
Privacy was a major factor when designing the Audioscrobbler system.

We do not publish contact details, so no-one can link your username to your email address
We do not store IP addresses in our database, they are only held in RAM whilst your plugin is active
Plugins do not send the filename or filetype, so we cannot tell whether your music is from an original CD or an MP3 file (we don't want to know)
Our protocol and plugins are open source, and spyware free.

Wait a minute... Isn't this Spyware?
No. The plugins do only what you'd expect; send your listening data to the Audioscrobbler server. They don't harvest any other information from your computer or secretly install rubbish like Gator or Bonzi Buddy. If you're really worried you can grab the latest source code from our Sourceforge project page and compile a plugin yourself

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Steps to follow for the n00bs

1. Register a username
2. Download your audio player's plugin here
3. Install, enable, and setup your username/password for you plugin.
4. Join a group or just check your profile for your track listings!
5. Play music!

Sounds pretty cool, I use Audiomatch right now but I see you can create groups on here...we should start a trancEaddict group for everybody to join.

Posted by sly on Mar-08-2004 00:20:

Yeah, I created a TRANCE group but a TA one would be cool.

Actually, spyware is a program that you DON"T WANT, but this you definitely do want!

Why would I like to know your playlists?

Posted by sly on Mar-08-2004 00:25:

Trance = me. So approve me! Maybe you should put the group as OPEN instead?

There's more than just playlists. There are group forums and such...reminds me alot like the groups that Audiogalaxy used to have.

I may set it to member approval, but I don't want it set to open cause then anybody can join and spam in the forums & such.

I think it allows people to see what songs are being listen to which in turn, enables one to see if the songs they are listening to are any good. Scrobber does rank tunes that are listen to the most. So maybe in a given week, you can see what tunes are being played the most. And in the long run, maybe even see what tunes were played the most throughout the year (Tune of the year guesstimater).

Took the words right out of my mouth.

This would have been great before the RIAA. I'm not interested in giving them an opportunity to spy on me.

Posted by Nell on Mar-08-2004 12:13:

havign mp3's arent illegal, especially if you own the original recording anyway. blah blah blah.

Posted by sly on Mar-08-2004 14:53:

THe RIAA are after filesharing. Scrobber obviously is NOT filesharing so it is perfectly legal. It a system that tracks your listening habits and really just text information (and if anything, the RIAA would want to use this system for marketing research not shut it down). I think people should be more vigilant about their rights because the RIAA are a bunch of SHHHIAT! with their scare tactics.

Posted by TeKnoHe@d2025 on Mar-08-2004 17:56:

MP3s can be legally obtained these days, there's no way of telling how an MP3 was obtained simply by looking at this site. As stated before, the RIAA is after filesharing not whatever is being played on your Winamp/WMP players.

Oh yeah, it'll be very convincing with all those rip group tags..

My ID3s are all properly tagged and organized. Rip groups don't usually insert their names in the ID3 tag on the artist & title. Usually just in the filename, which the plugin does not read from.

At least try to learn something about what you're going to try and flame.
