Question calm mixing advice

ok, i have been spinning for around 8 month (trance), i have learned so quick , i can beat match and get the brakes ( timing ) correct all the time, but recently we launched a party and i was so tense whilst mixing , i wasnt fucking up the mixes, in fact i was at best but i could not relax and enjoy untill around 6 mixes, it was so strange and has never really happend before, there was around 60 in the party and i was so nervous and tense , is this norm because i hope next party i dont get this feeling again, its not to good..... any good advice on anyone with past experience like this

Hrm...

A few shots of vodka usually work for me.

Posted by j_spot on Aug-13-2001 15:45:

Smoking ..umm..something

well..if it dont fuck u up too much...try some chronic. =)

Hehe, I've tried smoking, it usually confuses the hell outta me, and I'd rather go eat some chips.

Alcohol gets me into it, and I mix much better, because it loosens me up.

it's quite normal, I guess. I was so nervous the first couple of times I played, I was shaking so badly that I could hardly set the needle on the record! But it goes away. You will only get it on special occasions, like: first time in front of 1,000 people or first time in front of 10,000 people.
Even the biggest have problems like that. Gary D had to throw up just before his Mayday set...so don't worry, you'll get used to it. And YES, alcohol might help (but don't overdo it)

when people pay good $ to see you spin, YES there is such thing!

I hate spending 15 $ to get in and then see some f**ked up guy spinning worse than my mother cause he's had too many shots of Jagermeister

Smiley DJ

try meditating... when you're ready for mixing, close your eyes, take a deep breath, and just loosen up...... and then focus on your mix.

or, before the party starts (after you finished building up the set), close your eyes, relax, and let your mind drift away......
some of you guy probably think it's bullshit, but it's not. it works for me every time I'm nervous.....

oh yea...i've been spinning for around five months and just saturday i played at one of my friends' house parties...me, my friend who's had his decks for about a month, and a guy who was quite, quite good. needless to say, going on after him was a bit intimidating, and i was a little nervous...but after a few tracks i hit 'the zone' and just went off. it felt really good to see my friend who dances like theres no tomorrow at raves just go off with me behind the decks...an amazing feeling to drop a track everyone knows and loves and see everyone's faces...i don't really have any advice for ya, just to let you know your not alone =)

great thead.
only party ive spun so far was a bday party ,like 40 ppl but none dancing, how dumb... about half the ppl liked the music, but anyways i wasnt really nervous..
so i only trainwrecked briefly, like once, in about 4-5 hrs of spinning (all my records, haaha)
i cant remember how tight the mixes were, but they sounded ok..

i remember hearing about when fergie goot so fucked out of his face he couldn't even stand and jules had to take over his set. i don't think i'd have been happy if i was there.

ive had this a few times, spun at freinds parties and it is so much harder than when you mix in your bedroom. i actually agree with wot hypersonic said, if you just calm down, relax and concentrate, you'll do fine, even forget that the people are there for the first few mixes to encourage yourself (don't forget that they are there for the whole set though, crowd interaction is important in my opinion)

yea if u jus see the crowd standing there while your playing epic/progressive stuff thats a sign to put on hardddd shieeeet...just used common judgement and work up the crowd.

Posted by mute79 on Aug-15-2001 03:12:

try this
for the first couple of mixes, dont look at the crowd, just imagine youre spinning for yourself in your bedroom... i know for a fact this helps!!!

Hahaha, I have been so nervous spinning out that I have taken the needle off the reord that was playing! DOH!

Thankfully being nervous has escaped me when I play, but I still want to make sure that I play a kick ass set for all my friends and others that are out to hear me.

I always make sure to bring a little of the good ganja with me whenever I am playing out!

burns,

that's natural. The first time I spinned publically, I was nervous as a fu(k. But after about 5 mixes, I was feeling much more comfortable.

You'll feel much more comfortable the next time you spin, GUARENTEED.
The first is always the most tense. The rest is downhill.

I agree with you 100%... meditation can be a great relaxant, and it doesn't fuck up your reflexes like alcohol/drugs... reflexes that you'll need to get a good beatmatch going.

Also, make sure that you get to your gig a good bit ahead of time so you can set up your gear and check it all in a leisurely manner. 15 minutes just isn't enough to get your whole system up and running and your set prepared. If you have plenty of time you'll be more relaxed once the set starts, because you won't be wigging out over your gear or what tracks you're going to play. Once things get moving, it'll be a cakewalk.

Something strange happend to me when i spin...
The space disappear, the people who dont dance disappear, the people working with me disappear, AND MY GIRLFRIEND DISAPPEAR!!
Only people who really move their body can get my attention.
Because of this i work better when the crowd is bigger, and i feel REALLY happy.

wow! I remember that happening to me.... just that my girfriend wasn't there with me..... and the people who were dancing were so close to me, I couldn't see the ones who weren't dancing..... (there were about 200-300 people at that party, and almost all of them were dancing)
that really helps... and it's another piece of advice for not being nervous.... you gotta work on that.... just pay attention to that dancing crowd, and don't give a fuck about all the rest.....

That's why it's called TRANCE guys...

That happens a lot when I'm just listening to a track or a set or something, it feels like the sound just becomes one big pipe - I don't hear a beat or anything (I feel it) and it all swirls around me. Sometimes when I'm mixing I start to feel my heart beat in time to the music, too - which, at 140 bpm or so, probably isn't all that healthy, but it feels cool anyway

Posted by HyPeRSoNiC on Aug-18-2001 14:21:

Love

that happens to me too sometimes......
when that happens I'm alot more awake and alert and I can mix alot better that way, by just listen to my heartbeat . but after the mix I have to drink lots of cold water or some sweet drink.... like coke or just some kind of juice....... cause my metabolism is high, and I sweat like a pig...... and besides, I need something to cool me off......
but that only happens in some of my sets... never when I listen to stuff at home.... hehe......
