This is for you dj_ilan_yosef, from Reuters, not from a biased Jerusalem newspaper.

TERRORIST ATTACK IN GAZA STRIP KILLS 14, WOUNDS 72

NUSSEIRAT REFUGEE CAMP, Gaza Strip (Reuters) - Armoured Israeli forces have raided two Gaza refugee camps, igniting gunbattles that killed 14 Palestinians after militants staged an audacious attack on Israeli soldiers at Gaza's border.

Ten of the dead were gunmen -- nine from the powerful Islamist faction Hamas, and the rest were civilians including three boys, a Hamas statement and hospital medics said.

Seventy-two Palestinians were hurt, many teenagers who threw stones and petrol bombs at the Israelis, who took no casualties in the fighting in the teeming Nusseirat and al-Bureij camps.

Violence has escalated in the Gaza Strip since Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon announced a unilateral plan last month to evacuate Jewish settlers from occupied areas of the territory if a U.S.-backed peace "road map" fails.

Analysts say militants are keen to bloody Israelis as much as possible beforehand to portray any pullout as a victory for their fight. Israel, they say, wants to avoid that impression by striving to cripple militant groups before it quits Gaza.

"Hamas confirms...that Sharon will pay a heavy price, God-willing, and will only leave the Gaza Strip vanquished and defeated," the group said in a statement.

In the raid, tanks and troops backed by helicopters fought militants armed with rifles and rocket launchers.

"Soldiers blasted their way into our housing block at 4 a.m.," said Mahmoud Abu Hujair, a father of three. "They turned our roof into a base to battle gunmen. Women and children were screaming. The building was heavily damaged."

Israeli forces withdrew from the central Gaza camps around five hours after sweeping in under cover of darkness.

MORE RECRIMINATIONS AS PEACE PLAN LANGUISHES

The Palestinian cabinet denounced the operation as "state terror against our people".

An Israeli army spokesman said the raids were "pinpoint" pre-emptive strikes against "terror groups" that had been escalating gun, mortar bomb and rocket attacks on Jewish settlements in Gaza and border areas for months.

The mother of nine-year-old Yousuf, one of the boys killed in the operation, told reporters she tried to stop him following his older brother into the street as fighting raged.

"He said, 'You won't keep me a prisoner' -- and then he went outside," she said.

Brigadier Ruth Yaron, the army's chief spokesperson, told Israeli television: "We should regret when a child is killed -- undoubtedly, it's a tragedy. But we must realise what we're up against. If we're not there to catch those launching (rockets)...children elsewhere will be killed."

On Saturday, six Palestinians were killed during an abortive assault by militants in fake Israeli army jeeps at the Erez crossing. Hamas, Islamic Jihad and al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades said they carried out a joint strike and pledged more attacks.

It followed an Israeli missile strike on Wednesday that killed three Hamas militants in central Gaza.

More than 50,000 Palestinians joined funeral marches on Sunday for the casualties in Israel's incursion and the Erez attack. Militants fired into the air and swore revenge.

"The reaction of this crime will be very soon and we say to the Zionists that any restaurant or bus or bus stop may be a target of our heroic explosions," said one masked militant.

Yes, the first sentence: "Armoured Israeli forces have raided two Gaza refugee camps...after militants staged an audacious attack on Israeli soldiers at Gaza's border."

I say that starting an Israeli - Palestinian thread should attract an automatic ban. That ought to fix the problem, and hopefully rid us of a few of the main perpetrators.

Israel has been evacuating residents from their homes and confiscating the land around the large settlement of Netzarim in Gaza. This is what's behind the recent violence there. Just thought I'de say this since the mainstream media won't.

What can I say your faced with: doing nothing, doing what your enemies what you to, and defending yourself. All these options generate violence, so you might as well fight back if thats what you face, no?

well put Yoepus....

but what disturbes me the most in this situation is that Sharon's goverment is stuck, and did actually nothing since it was elected (even twice).

I want a real goverment (finally i can vote) that will do something smart dammit. (actually today I want that man in my sig, Meir Shitrit, to lead Israel).

as i see it, all those 4 years Sharon's main strategy was :
"Our main goal is to fight Terror, and ALL dicisions should be coordinated with US", Thats a nice stategy, and it did work at first but in the long run in meant - a futile israeli govermnet that cant make simple disicions and design its near future policy, a policy that should be followed and not be changed after every suicide bombing\bush's speaches.

-so ok...he started to build the wall - but too late. (not to mention some ready parts of it which costed MILLIONS have been destroyed and moved closer to the green line, why not build it right from the start??)
-and ok , he said he will evacuate illigal outposts in west bank - ant did too little , too late.
-he talked about expeling Arafat - but nothing was made.
-he talked about a reform in the PLO - and now When no reform was actually made (its a fact that arafat still controls EVERYTHING in the PLO) - its like he forgot about how is it important. no pressure watsoever is put now on that issue neigther from israel or EU\US.

Sharon is making me crazy, he's lost and cant make logical decisions, a.k.a evacuation of Gaza witouht any political foundation to prevent gaza turning into Hamas Land... he doesnt even listen to the commander in chief of the IDF. damn....

dear Sharon, wake up - or go home.

(sorry for spelling mistakes, i'm kinda busy )
