Tracklists

Just was curious about everyones personal view about constructing a tracklist.

Do you select what songs you're going to play and what order you'll play them in prior to your mix or do you just pick songs at a whim?

Any other info you'd care to add about tracklists would be greatly appreciated.

well...you should have a general idea about what songs mix well with others, but just go and play what feels good...

well it totally depends for what.

if a mix is for a demo, i highly recommend that you construct a tracklist beforehand. that way you can really focus on your mixing and make it top notch for those clubs and promoters to hear.

when just messin around or practicing, i recommend just playing what you think will sound good.

when playing out, play a bit to the crowd, and feed off of their energy when going through your set. of course have some idea of what track to play (considering bpm, harmonies, beat structure etc..)

personaly im not very good at doing that. while playing a constructed set i find your emotions can change and make you want to do something off the plan. even small things can effect my emotions enough to want to play a differant song.



so thats how i do it....play a track that fits with how i feel emotionaly and let the music help decide my emotions as i play.

the very small amount of times i have played in front of more then 2 people (lol), i always had an idea of what i wanted to start and end with.. and in between just came along... as for a demo or something, i kind of make a playlist, but it usually changes.

I guess this called programming? knowing your records is a big help.

grab a whole bunch of records

when i spin i usually like to spin for about seventy minutes or less (unless i'm spinning a party or a club). seventy minutes usually translates to about eleven or twelve songs. so what i do is i pick out about twenty songs from my collection of vinyl and arrange them starting with the most low key intro songs, then adding harder and faster dance tunes further along in my set.

this way i have an idea of what songs i would like to spin and a general idea of what order they should come in, but am free to change my mind at any time. if i have a bad feeling about the next record to spin, i simply place it towards the back and if i feel like it, i spin it later in my set. if not, it's no big deal because i have lots of extra vinyl so i won't run out of music.

this method works fairly well for me, although there are times where i'll run back to my closet to pick out a particularly sick song that i forgot to add to my lineup. you can't exactly predict how you will feel during your set and where your emotions will take you..

Either I just play whatever I'm in the mood for, or I select a few tracks that I wanna play, think about the order they'll be in then construct the rest of the set around them. It's quite unusual for me to plan the whole set out, I'd rather just play what I'm feeling like at the time

I select a few tracks that i MUST play, some tracks which build up to or revolve around these MUSTPLAY tracks, and the rest are just fillers. If I was playing out (which I don't) then I would change the fillers to whatever I feel would work the crowd.
