Bowling for Columbine: Locks

I recently saw Bowling for Columbine. In the movie (for those who haven't seen it) Michael Moore visits a Canadian neighborhood in some major city and checks the front door of homes (all of which are unlocked). His point was Canadians are more trusting and less paranoid about their safety.

My question are:
How many of you leave your doors unlocked?
Is this a common practice in Canada?
Are Canadians less paranoid about home security (compared to americans)?

I live in the USA and don�t but I'm in the country where there isn't any crime.

now that I moved to the ghetto two three weeks ago the door is always locked. It's a shared house and everyone has to lock it at all times.

Eh, I believe it has to do with population size of the town also. I know when I lived out in the country (low pop density) of the US, a lotta people never locked their doors, but now I am in a crime filled area with over a million people (high pop density) and you better believe people are locking their doors.

But you should check how many people leave their cars unlocked, it is insane.

i don't lock my door... but i'm sure lots of people do. i live in the suburbs, if i lived closer to the city i probably would. i'm not paranoid about safety. i, personally, have been a victim of crime only once: i was sitting at a bus stop late at night (when i was about 15-16) and someone ran up behind me and punched me in the face, and stole my skateboard. it sucked, but i got over it.

i usually lock my door. sometimes i cant be arsed or im in a rush i dont bother.

i lock it now as im precautious, i got so much crap in my house...my room for example is worth nicking.

I live in the nicest neighborhood in my city and I lock my doors unless I'm expecting someone or if I'm just running out of the house really quickly. What are a bunch of rich 80-yr-olds going to steal from my house??

i used to leave my door open all the time back in the eighties..shit has changed in toronto tho...so u cant do that no more...i dont see kids playing on the streets anymore either...(i blame comps and videogames for that) but when i was a kid it was pure strret hockey and causing shit outside...dont see that no more...i know however my bestfriends family keep their door open all the time...even when they go away lol...so many times theyve been out of town and i went over and watched tv and ate some food...but then again i got a spare key and im allowed :P im like family

we always lock the doors. Have dead bolts and security and alarms and stuff. It really depends which area you live in too. We never have our doors unlocked, dont want those jehova witnesses coming in

was his point that ppl leave their doors unlocked while home, or while they are out???

i never lock my door when im home... but i alwyas look it when im leaving the house

I live in a dorm right now, but I'm still anal about locking the door. My roomy knows better than to leave without locking it, because I have a $1600 computer, a 27-inch TV, a $400 home theater stereo and about 50 DVDs. Not to mention the fact that my ENTIRE collection of trance is in the CD binders in my drawer and on my hard drive. Basically, everything I own (other than my car) that is important to me is in this room.

My door is unlocked during the day when I'm at home. But before I go to bed at night I lock the door.

when i lived in medicine hat we didn't worry about locking our doors too much, the population is about 50 000 and it wasn't a massive problem, however now, i live in downtown calgary with another girl and so we do keep our doors locked at all times just incase. But it is more common to have doors unlocked in canada, at least that's what i think.

I keep my door locked and my gun loaded. I live in the suburbs, but there's always shit going down on my street. Last time someone tried breaking in I broke his nose & jaw. It took 3 hours to get the stains out of my carpet!

I don't lock my doors generally, but I live in a small house in a small town. At night I do just for peace of mind. Otherwise they answer to my 13-ball in a sock.

Low population density? I do believe Michael Moore was in Toronto when he went knocking on open doors. Toronto's population as of the 2001 census was 2 481 494. The population of the GTA was 4 682 897. That ain't no small town.

I lock my doors at night to keep out the riffraff, which includes my own kids who think they can roam in at any hour of the night with their buds and dick around while I'm sleeping. They generally get the message and avoid awakening the friggin' ogre (me), and move on to another house to screw around in.

Works for me. Guns no problem, got several loaded.

I dont lock my doors when I'm home, when I go out I always lock them though.

I usually leave the doors unlocked, but my parents are absolutly paranoid, so they end up getting locked anyway.

Locking doors is overrated. I live in a basement suite and the only reason I lock mine at night is because my housemate is a creeping psycho. All other times my doors are proudly unlocked

The movie lied, it's as simple as that. I'd like to see him try the locks in Parkdale. Or alternatively, in a rural American town.

its somewhat true. i guess if i lived in Parkdale in Toronto I would lock my door.

The thing is that even if you lock your door, if someone wants to get in they will anyways. At the moment I lock my doors but not when I'm inside, so pretty much you could walk in if I was home. Just like Moore showed in him movie.

I also lived up north in Canada and there, my lock didn't work half the time so it was never locked. My parents still don't lock the car door.

But I live in Toronto, and I wouldn't feel too upset leaving the door open a few times.
