Smiley DJ need some help getting into the dj world

i've had my 1200's and my djm-600 for over 2 years now. I think i am finally ready to step out of my room and into the clubs. Need some advise on how to go about it tho. You guys just drop cd's everywhere? phone around? heh beg club managers? what does it take?

thanks!

in my opinion it is who you know, but having awsome skillz is pretty essential.

Come out to the clubs and meet other TAs. Go to parties and raves and chat it up with people. Get to know promoters. Make other friends in the DJ world and spread demo CDs everywhere. It's truly all about who you know. Viva fridays are a great place to start if you're just getting into this scene, a lotof TAs and very well-connected people hang out there (in fact, the night is run by two TAs here, dj-sean and 24K). Visit TA and FNK.ca a LOT. Basically, just get really, really involved in the scene. The more people you know, the easier it is to get your foot in the door.

Hope to see you around. Best of luck to you!

werd, tis all about who you know to get started, and having skills just elevates yo biznazz.

at least, thats what i think, in reality, i have no clue.

the only way to get gigs is to know promoters. thats pretty much the bottom line. thats reality.

'Tis true. That's what so great about Vancouver's scene...compared to some other cities, our scene is still relatively small and growing all the time, a lot of new promoters throwing parties and new DJs breaking into the biz. So it's probably a little easier to get into the scene here and meet promoters than it is in a bigger, more established club scene.

Yeah, and unless you're one of the lucky people out there that just happens to know a ton of promoters before getting started, you're going to have to get it done the hard way. I got my first gigs by going to clubnights, chatting with the promoters and giving them CDs, and hanging out there so they got to know my face. That's how I met Danny who eventually got us the hook up at Viva.

Honestly if someone gives me a CD it means nothing. It's so easy to do a good mix it's not even funny, and I have no idea how they play under pressure, or what their mentality in general is. If someone wants to get booked at Viva it's pretty much not going to happen unless they come out a few times and get to know us.

tis true, bout who you know out there. I've heard not only from the advice from the distinguish and established personnel in this thread alone, but from other sources, its best to get to know the people who would potentially be the ones giving you a job.

simply passing out demos left and right isn't enough, if they can put a face to a name and a face to a demo, and they like what they hear, you're more likely to get something.

as suggested, hang out around promoters and djs and clubs you'd like to play at or are potentially looking for someone like yourself, they can help.

definitely check out club viva in richmond, its the regular progressive, psych, hard, but mostly trance night every week. there's a few other gigs weekly (i have to give props to mirka and lidster who frequent the drink on thursdays even tho i have yet to check it out for myself) but this is one you'll want to hang out at if you can.

i will not repeat what everyone else has already said and i will say contact angelo (35 and hooked), and offer him to play on his radio show. he'll gladly let you go up to SFU for an hour or so mix and it will be your first gig, broadcasted to the whole city AND the world (there are people in other countries who listen to angelo's show on a regular basis)

Unfortunatelly people in this city as well as most cities don't give a rats ass about how good you are, it lies in who you know. I speak from experience.
Drop a demo down to boomtown and i'll have you on my radio show
(And if the R3 guys like your demo you are welcome to come and spin at the drink)
