disappointed....

being a huge fan of gabriel & dresdens music
when i saw them at Spundae @ chicago
i was very disappointed to see them playing 100% cds
also their mixing was not up to par....

I think one has to be cautious about having high expectations when going to see a set spun by people primarily known as producers.

I have a lot of respect for G&D's productions, but I wouldn't expect their DJing skills to be on par with the greats because they are, first and foremost, producers.

Great DJ/Producer combos are rare, which is why people like Sasha and Paul van Dyk are so high on my list, consistently good sets, consistently good productions.

So what if there whole set was on CD you'd be surprised that cds arent as easy as it looks to be mixing on, I use CD's and Its vry diffifcult I wouldnt say harder then Tables but it is hard to mix with Cds theres nothing wrong with usin Cd's

Yeah, i don't know why people keep complaining about DJs mixing with CDs. There's nothing wrong with it, dammit! PvD uses CDs and Finalscratch too, does this make him less of a DJ? No.

btw. I would say mixing with CDs is easier since you've got all those Cue-Points and stuff. The only disadvantage is, that every CD Player is different. With Vinyl it's everything almost the same. I myself mix with CDs

Because the fact if the tracks they played were on vinyl would make a blind bit of difference?

well, where i come from [ chicago ] djs that use mostly cds get virtually no respect. i only use cds if i cant find the track on vinyl...being an avid vinyl buyer i'm proud to be a dj that supports the music and the artists rather than just downloading it.
and yes, cds are much easier to mix than records. if you are using cds, your set should be better than flawless.

its better when the djs use all cds cos you know youre going to hear loads of upfront tunes that are only on cd. their mixing is alright its pretty standard mixing, its not sh*te but it doesnt really stand out.

If G&D didn't use CDs, they wouldn't be able to do all those cool live bootleg mixes and such, which is their trademark sound/style. Dissing a DJ these days for using CDs is both ignorant and pointless. Even most of the die-hard vinyl lovers out there are turning over to Final Scratch if not CDs. Would you seriously expect G&D to take every single brand new Edit, rework, bootleg, remix, promo, etc that they want to play and press it to vinyl? It would be a collosal waste of money and time. Dave spins strictly on cdj1000's as far as I know, and I don't blame him. They offer a ton of flexibility and allow you to be very creative with your mixing.

Generally speaking, people who have been spending most of their time producing aren't the best DJs; you shouldn't have super high expectations of their DJ skills when you see them live. G&D have been spending most of their time hard at work producing tons of great tracks, it's only very recently that they've gone out and started touring more. They will get better at DJing in time. Case in point: I saw James Holden a while back and his mixing was terrible. I saw him again in December and his mixing had improved a great deal.

An example from my personal life as well: I attempted to do some spinning the other day after not having done it for 2 months. My mixing used to be great, but sure enough I sounded like shit this time. It doesn't take a whole lot of time to get rusty if you aren't in constant practice. And I only produced 1 song in that amount of time. G&D have made like 10!

not really, most of G&D sets are composed of really new tracks that havent been released or won't ever be released. Just take a look at their tracklisting lately.

Perhaps you didn't notice his thousands of CDs? He DJs with the CDs he buys, just like you do with your records. Both are supporting the scene.

being dissappointed about the CDs thing is really lame, but how was their track selection? i used to see dave spin back in the day in CT and he could really rip shit up. i havent ever seen g&d dj as a team before.
