Shambala budget

So with the risk of being banned from this forum for posting too much here I am with my next thread. Well this winter I found out that there is a big event in Fernie BC in August and I started checking out info about it. It appears that it's a goa event just like the Motion Notion, but a bit bigger. Although I personally am not a big fan of goa, or at least of the type of goa event that the Motion Notion is (pardon me, but last year the DJ line up at the Motion Notion sucked), I am still very found of the energy level and type of ppl that go to these events, so I decided to go to it. Oh yea, the name of the Festival is Shambala( I bet you all know of it, but still).

But enough with the pointless blabbing, I wanted to ask you what kind of budget I should save for it. I know that the tickets are going to be around 100 bucks, but if you could share how much you have spent in previous years when you went there I will greatly appreciate it. Is there a city close by and how expensive is to buy essentials such as alcohol, food and others ? Is it hard to find the camp ground, this may sound funny to you, but last year, despite of all the maps about the Motion Notion event I still ended up driving in the middle of nowhere at 2 am trying to find where the fuck I had to go.
Well thats about it, any info is greatly appreciated.

Cheers

you wont get banned or suspended for posting too much

first off Shambhala is not in Fernie, its just outside of Nelson, and while Ive never been, I do understand that it is easy to find.
from what my friends tell me the cost of the tix are the only fixed cost. Driving out there, food for camping, booze, drugs etc all add up and in the end, the weekend can cost you up 350 or 400 dollars for 3 days

and you can already buy tix to save money if you want.

Its not all goa is it?? Motion Notion was all goa?????

Posted by exergo on Mar-14-2004 02:22:

all the "headliners" are breaks djs from th uk...its crazy
there is also goa, house, trance, and more breaks, some jungle, and more breaks....

i will be going this summer....

i say 100-150 for a ticket, 100 to get there and back, 50 for food etc, and depends how much fun you want to have, lol, $xxx for party favours

I've herd that shambala is a such a good time, out in the forest and everything. Enjoy.

like j spot its not even close to fernie its around an 8 hour drive which is quite a bit further than fernie, and the lineup for motion notion didn't suck, its well known what kind of music is played at motion notion and if you go expecting fluffy bitch trance than of course your going to be disappointed, and if you didnt like the dj's there you might wanna check the shambala lineup before you buy your ticket cause you might not like the djs that play there either, all that aside I have heard nothing but good things about this event and will hopefully be attending this year

I might have been a bit harsh about the Motion Notion event last year, but I was there for the first time and to tell you the truth I couldn't feel the music very much. I was expecting it to be goa trance event, but all I heard was breaks, dark ambient and maybe some goa. And pardon me, but the DJ's were totally unknown to me, not that this would have mattered if they had played the type of trance that I like. So that is one of the reasons I posted this post. As you can see I was a bit disappointed from the MN and I am trying to find out if Shambala is the same type of event???
Now , about the "fluffy bitch trance", hmm, I would like you to define this genre to me and to please tell me if there are any FLUFFY BITCH TRANCE music festivals in CANADA??? I would love to attend one of these to, maybe I will like them
NOW THAT IS ONE FLUFFY BITCH

Last year was my first year going. And it was the probably one of the funnest times I've ever had in my life. There was always something to do, someone to talk to. I can't wait to go back this year!!!

$300 for unknown djs... Oh God! For $60 you can just go to WEMF, which is a 3 day event! Plus, you'll get to see the world's top DJs. Unless you guys are planning to book Astral Projection, Astrix, Guy Salama, Infected Mushroom, 1200 Micrograms, Hallucinogen, Talamasca, and our local psy/goa/tribal/breaks/D&B/jungle DJs I'm not paying anything over $25 for this event...

Posted by Itso on Mar-17-2004 06:31:

WEMF???
Pardon my ignorance, but would you please explain what is this?

you're a complete moron, its $300 for all your expenses, the total to go toronto would be well over $500 probably close to $1000 by the time you were done with wemf, and who cares if the djs are "unknown" or are you one of those idiots that thinks you have to be on the top 100 to know how to dj? People like you are whats wrong with the scene, I've heard/read hundreds of reviews that shambala was the experience of a life time but hey you seem to know your stuff so whatever

Oh God! No more outburst from you! The key here is if you go to WEMF as a group you save big. Here is the expenses break down in case you want to look at the estimated cost of going to WEMF

Trip plan
=========
From: Vancouver, BC
Canada To: Toronto, ON
Canada
Estimated travel time: 38 hours and 6 minutes for 4386.67 km of travel.

Days driving
------------------
Assuming that you are doing 120km/h and you and your friends drive for 14h a day, switching drivers every 4 hours, then you can drive 1680km /day. So it will take you around 3 days to get to Toronto.

Gas
----
191.60*2= $383.21 both ways (assumption fuel consumption is at 5.2 L/100 km )
Now split that between 4 people and you get

$95/person on fuel

Hotel
-----
rent 1 room and bring sleeping bags for the other 3 friends that are going with you.

Renting a room at a cheap hotel is $40/night. Now, rent 1 room and split the cost between 4 people. Every night someone takes the bed and others sleep in sleeping bags. Total cost for a 6 days worth of hotel is

40*6/4 = 60/person on accommodations

WEMF Ticket
------------------
$60/person FOR 3 DAYS (early bird price)

Food
-------
$15/day * 9 days (3 days going there, 3 days partying, 3 days going back) = $135

Car + Tent + Sleeping bags
----
$0 (Assuming someone has a car, a tent and sleeping bag)

TOTAL COST
------------------
$95/person on fuel +60/person on accommodations+$60/person FOR 3 DAYS (early bird price) + $135 (food) = $350 for the entire trip for WEMF

$350 for WEMF (NON LOCAL EVENT) vs. $300 for shambala (LOCAL EVENT)

Thanks for ignoring what I said and twisting all my words against me. First off Astral Projection, Astrix, Guy Salama, Infected Mushroom, 1200 Micrograms, Hallucinogen, Talamasca are not in the top 100. While bringing our local psy/goa/tribal/breaks/D&B/jungle DJs you are supporting the local scene. Pay more attention to detail when you read. Don't just rush and post something incoherent without reading what the other person has said.

How so? Because I posted what I thought about paying $300 for a local party... You have to give me and other non believers more reasons to attend this rather than just cuss at me. $300 goes a long way, but I guess if you are promoter and you are trying to rip people off then charging anything over $100 for tix is ok, right?

If you are really there for the music and think that this is the experience of a life time and you want as many people to attend to this as possible and share your passion for the electronic scene then lower the prices and youll see more people in attendance. This kind of parties should be free IMHO. I mean I want to see the exact breakdown of your expenses, because Im a bit confused as to why I have to pay soo much for a ticket and all the other expenses.

Good to hear that Shambala is an experience of a lifetime. I dont claim to know my stuff, but posting that the cost of the party will be $300 doesnt really get my hopes up. I guess to you money is something you can throw around. Im a student and my tuition is $4500/term now thats $9000 for 2 university terms just on Tuition. I also have to pay for housing and food while Im studying. While in Van I have to pay for my accommodations and food as well. $300 bucks is one months rent in Waterloo, and if you think that poor folks on this board are willing to spend this kind of money in 3 days then you are mistaken. If to you money is something you use to wipe your ass with in the bathroom and its an unlimited resource to you then do as you please.

Posted by Mainerski on Mar-17-2004 21:56:

ROFL.. you're a geek.. way to waste your time calculating all that garbage.. .. Shambala is worth every penny.. now shut it

Posted by Dwunky on Mar-18-2004 04:06:

Also if you had got Early bird tickets for Shambhala you would be paying about $80/ticket.

Now I haven't been to WEMF. But from anyone I know that has gone to both have said that Shambahala was a way better time.

I found it was well worth the money I paid to go. Most DJ's that I heard there played way better sets then most International DJ's I've heard.

hehe, I wish. No, they will not be playing at Shambala.

Posted by Spaceman Spiff on Mar-18-2004 19:14:

I'm not sure how you guys can be squaring these two events off against each other. For me, at least, driving half way across the country is not an option I would consider. The event 3500km away could be astronomically better, I still wouldn't go.

I don't think the $350 vs. $300 is a realistic comparison either. A similar price breakdown for Shambhala using the same logic would have been:

$15 each for gas
8 hours drive
$0 motels
$80 early bird ticket
$45 food for 3 days

So it should be $350 vs. $140 making the same assumptions of no snacks/refreshments on the way, no extras at the event like beer and such, really good gas mileage, no monetary impact from taking 7 days off work as opposed to 1, etc.

I don't doubt that WEMF is a fantastic event and I would love to go, it's just not a viable alternative to Shambhala for someone out west.

Posted by NightCreature on Mar-19-2004 02:26:

This still doesn't explain why the early bird tickets are so expensive. Shouldn't they be $45 instead of 80? I'm just wondering what it is that I will be paying for here, if I were to go to this. Also how many people usually show up for this?

Posted by NightCreature on Mar-19-2004 02:49:

So much for early bird tix. The funny thing is that you need to get those 9 months in advance

3 days of camping + DJs for $100 + food
or you could go to a Vancouver massive and pay $60

6 stages, international DJs
not over crowded
or you could head 1/2 way across the country for a car camping like party where its so packed and indoors..your choice.

Posted by NightCreature on Mar-19-2004 03:52:

So how many people usually attend Shambhala?

Posted by FattyFats on Mar-19-2004 04:25:

They cap it at 5000 every year. Last year was slightly less, say 4000, I think because tickets were 150 across the board.

IMHO it is worth every penny. This will be my third year. Although they spin mostly breaks, there is a dedicated psy trance stage with a sand dance floor called 'Inna Sanctum' back in the trees.

The set up is absolutely mind-blowing. The People are awesome. It is far enough away from Van and Cal/Edm that you don't get the macho crap that other festivals have. Just go. It will be the best decision you will make this summer.

Cheers
