Shambala budget
So with the risk of being banned from this forum for posting too much
here I am with my next thread. Well this winter I found out that there is a big event in Fernie BC in August and I started checking out info about it. It appears that it's a goa event just like the Motion Notion, but a bit bigger. Although I personally am not a big fan of goa, or at least of the type of goa event that the Motion Notion is (pardon me, but last year the DJ line up at the Motion Notion sucked), I am still very found of the energy level and type of ppl that go to these events, so I decided to go to it. Oh yea, the name of the Festival is Shambala( I bet you all know of it, but still).
But enough with the pointless blabbing, I wanted to ask you what kind of budget I should save for it. I know that the tickets are going to be around 100 bucks, but if you could share how much you have spent in previous years when you went there I will greatly appreciate it. Is there a city close by and how expensive is to buy essentials such as alcohol, food and others
? Is it hard to find the camp ground, this may sound funny to you, but last year, despite of all the maps about the Motion Notion event I still ended up driving in the middle of nowhere at 2 am trying to find where the fuck I had to go.
Well thats about it, any info is greatly appreciated.
Cheers

first off Shambhala is not in Fernie, its just outside of Nelson, and while Ive never been, I do understand that it is easy to find.
from what my friends tell me the cost of the tix are the only fixed cost. Driving out there, food for camping, booze, drugs etc all add up and in the end, the weekend can cost you up 350 or 400 dollars for 3 days
and you can already buy tix to save money if you want.
Its not all goa is it?? Motion Notion was all goa?????
all the "headliners" are breaks djs from th uk...its crazy
there is also goa, house, trance, and more breaks, some jungle, and more breaks....
i will be going this summer....
i say 100-150 for a ticket, 100 to get there and back, 50 for food etc, and depends how much fun you want to have, lol, $xxx for party favours
I've herd that shambala is a such a good time, out in the forest and everything. Enjoy.
like j spot its not even close to fernie its around an 8 hour drive which is quite a bit further than fernie, and the lineup for motion notion didn't suck, its well known what kind of music is played at motion notion and if you go expecting fluffy bitch trance than of course your going to be disappointed, and if you didnt like the dj's there you might wanna check the shambala lineup before you buy your ticket cause you might not like the djs that play there either, all that aside I have heard nothing but good things about this event and will hopefully be attending this year
good time
last summer 2 of my buddies went .. they said it was unreal.. and totally worth the trip.. i might head there this summer.. good times..

that should help you decide, its their official website
Last year was my first year going. And it was the probably one of the funnest times I've ever had in my life. There was always something to do, someone to talk to. I can't wait to go back this year!!!
$300 for unknown djs... Oh God! For $60 you can just go to WEMF, which is a 3 day event!
Plus, you'll get to see the world's top DJs. Unless you guys are planning to book Astral Projection, Astrix, Guy Salama, Infected Mushroom, 1200 Micrograms, Hallucinogen, Talamasca, and our local psy/goa/tribal/breaks/D&B/jungle DJs I'm not paying anything over $25 for this event...
WEMF???
Pardon my ignorance, but would you please explain what is this?

| Originally posted by mmmyummybacardi you're a complete moron, its $300 for all your expenses, the total to go toronto would be well over $500 probably close to $1000 by the time you were done with wemf |
The key here is if you go to WEMF as a group you save big. Here is the expenses break down in case you want to look at the estimated cost of going to WEMF| quote: |

You have to give me and other non believers more reasons to attend this rather than just cuss at me. $300 goes a long way, but I guess if you are promoter and you are trying to rip people off then charging anything over $100 for tix is ok, right?| quote: |

ROFL.. you're a geek.. way to waste your time calculating all that garbage..
.. Shambala is worth every penny.. now shut it
Also if you had got Early bird tickets for Shambhala you would be paying about $80/ticket.
Now I haven't been to WEMF. But from anyone I know that has gone to both have said that Shambahala was a way better time.
I found it was well worth the money I paid to go. Most DJ's that I heard there played way better sets then most International DJ's I've heard.
what ????
i didnt bother reading all of ur post so ill cut to the chase, did u say Astral, IM, Talamasca, GMS, Astrix and more are gonna play Shambhala ? cus thats not what the website says

I'm not sure how you guys can be squaring these two events off against each other. For me, at least, driving half way across the country is not an option I would consider. The event 3500km away could be astronomically better, I still wouldn't go.
I don't think the $350 vs. $300 is a realistic comparison either. A similar price breakdown for Shambhala using the same logic would have been:
$15 each for gas
8 hours drive
$0 motels
$80 early bird ticket
$45 food for 3 days
So it should be $350 vs. $140 making the same assumptions of no snacks/refreshments on the way, no extras at the event like beer and such, really good gas mileage, no monetary impact from taking 7 days off work as opposed to 1, etc.
I don't doubt that WEMF is a fantastic event and I would love to go, it's just not a viable alternative to Shambhala for someone out west.
This still doesn't explain why the early bird tickets are so expensive. Shouldn't they be $45 instead of 80? I'm just wondering what it is that I will be paying for here, if I were to go to this. Also how many people usually show up for this?
So much for early bird tix. The funny thing is that you need to get those 9 months in advance

3 days of camping + DJs for $100 + food
or you could go to a Vancouver massive and pay $60
6 stages, international DJs
not over crowded
or you could head 1/2 way across the country for a car camping like party where its so packed and indoors..your choice.
So how many people usually attend Shambhala?
They cap it at 5000 every year. Last year was slightly less, say 4000, I think because tickets were 150 across the board.
IMHO it is worth every penny. This will be my third year. Although they spin mostly breaks, there is a dedicated psy trance stage with a sand dance floor called 'Inna Sanctum' back in the trees.
The set up is absolutely mind-blowing. The People are awesome. It is far enough away from Van and Cal/Edm that you don't get the macho crap that other festivals have. Just go. It will be the best decision you will make this summer.
Cheers
