beatmatching

hi, i would like to know what is your preference when it comes to beatmatching, i mean how do u use your headphones, do u beatmatch using both ears and then monitor the mix using only one side or....
i ask this, since ive never played out or had a gig so i would like to practice in a way that it will help me if i have to

i beatmatch best with both ears in the phones and then mix the new tune in with 1 ear in the headphones and 1 on the monitors...


but alot of times its WAY too loud in clubs to use headphones that way.. so then i use 1 ear headphones and 1 ear monitors all the way... if you ever play out, be sure to go to the club hours before (like in the middle of the day during off hours) and familiarize yourself with the environment.. this really helps, knowing how the sound reflects off of the walls, and how the monitors work etc etc... it really helps, i guarantee it

I beatmatch with both ears in the phones too, allough like you say i think i'll have to learn to do it with one if I ever want to play out because many people tell me my method just isn't pratical in a club environment

yeah it really wasnt.. the first time i played out i went to the club around 2pm to test the setup etc etc.. and i tried beatmatching using my headphones (with the system up to normal club volumes) and i had trouble beatmatching as well as normal.

so i played there from about 2-6 just practicing beatmatching using monitor and my headphones. the night went off ok.. and i definitely recommend you do this at home if possible.

The only reason it may not be practical in a club is because the mixer may not support split headphone cue- there is no other reason for it being impractical.

As long as your headphones are decent and can support enough volume there should be no problem.
The club i am at on saturdays has been measured @123 dB by the dj console (ive seen peaks of 126 ocassionally)- and i have no problems matching etc purely in the phones- thats with my pioneer HDJ1000s, sony 700s and sennheiser hd 25s. That is also with Hearing protection worn under the headphones which will reduce their level further.

If the main club is any louder than that and you struggle to mix in the phones, then there will be a hell of a lot of deaf people in your town in a few years.....

i find it really hard to beatmatch perfectly using only one side... do u check that is on beat using both ears?
yeah, like freak said, i think if i ever play out i will get some musician earplugs
what i do is to press cue on chan 1 and 2, beatmatch and then when i mix it, i take off the headphones and every 15 secs or so i check it stays on beat, if not i have also cue/pgm on my mixer

I usually beatmatch with 1 ear and monitor with the other. Although when I think I got the beats as close as possible I switch to both ears through my headfones and make any minor adjustments. I found I can beat match great to a certain degree using the 1 ear method and fine tune with both. Thats just me though, heh...

i usualy have only 1 ear in the headphones...when its matched i put both ears in...when im done making the adjustments and know wat lvls im going to bring down...i take em off and get into the crowd...(not literally though)...the only time i put both channels mixing into the headphones at the same time is when both ears are in...when 1 ear is in...im only listening to one channel in the headphone...i know sum people who cant do that and need both channels in the ear to match...nothing against them though..its thier choice and ive seen amazing blends done that way...

I try to vary the methods I use just for practice, but even if I try using the one ear in/one out method, I find myself putting just a little bit of the other channel into the one side I have on, which probably isn't doable with many mixers anyways.

I use split cueing first to beat match, then press both channel buttons, so i hear both channels at once. finally I use single ear monitoring when i'm bringing the track in .

I used to use both sides of the headphones for beatmatching (split cueing). However, since there are several in-club mixers that don't allow that, I forced myself to rely only on one channel in one side of the headphones. After I got used to it, it's a lot easier. One trick I use is to turn up the headphone volume to the point that i don't have to press it against my ear to hear it. I can hear both playing at the same time (one from the left side of the headphone, the other over the speakers or monitor). It is a very effective way to beatmatch and also helps you learn to distinguish which is quicker or slower.... I hope that helps.

I only use one ear for monitoring, and only put on it one track at a time, the other ear on the air. I never take the headphones off of my head or change the position. I find it the most comfortable way, when I�m going to mix I just switch off the pfl button so I dont hear anything in the headphones, but I dont take em off, sometimes I switch on the pfl of one of the tracks to ensure they are beatmatched if I doubt which one is slower or quicker, specially at the end and begining of the mix when you can�t hear the in/outcoming track very well.
