Hello! what up from Toronto, Canada

Whats up everyone.....i'm from the home of Tranceaddict ( Toronto, Canada). I was think'n of com'n up to Australia and get my degree at the University of Western Sydney. I was wondering what the scene is like there..both trance/techno. And are there any opportunities available for techno dj's? It won't be for a year or so but i was just gathering some info on the scene. And i would be com'n their february to september or so, i was wondering what the weather is like during that duration.

Thanx

Sydney has a reasonable techno scene, probably even more happening there than there is in the trance scene

There are nights every 2-3 weeks though.

September is the best time of year for Sydney weather, we have sunshine and 25-28 degrees C for pretty much the whole month No coincidence that the Olympics were held in September

from Feb - till mid April the weather is pretty resonable. After that though we start getting into the colder months, nothing compared to Canada ofcourse, however still resonably cold.

Dont really follow the tech scene much, although there would definitely be a market in Sydney for you to exploit.

Cold? We think cold is 10 degrees C, whereas "cold" in Canada is like -5C or something like that.

Don't go to University of Western Sydney...too many westies!!!

Come to University of Sydney......

anything below 20c is cold for me under 15 and thats "chilly" after that..... well my brain doesnt know that cold really...

oh and one word: TAFE

Posted by Mr Rogers on Mar-18-2004 17:27:

haha....sorry, i ment down...
what's "TAFE"?
and for Canada....cold is -40 with a windchill.
go outside for 15secs and u can't feel ur face.

20 sounds warm to me.

TAFE = Technical and Further Education.

Basically it's like a trade college, where you go to learn to be a mechanic and stuff like that. Though they have computing courses too. It's more hands on than a university course, and there aren't any arts subjects like there are at university.

In September, a 20 degree day is cool, the average temp would be around 23-27 degrees. Nice and warm

I did TAFE for a couple of years, it's soooo cheap!

But you can only get a diploma not a degree.

dont go to tafe, is very sucky.

A couple of christmasses ago, a close friend of mine flew back from Canada to Australia.

When he got on the plane there it was -40 something..... got to Australia and got out of the plane to find it push 40 in Sydney. Then he flew to QLD.

I can say he was very much looking forward to aircon when he got in the car!

Too many westies?? What no one from Australia goes to UWS?

I was planning on doing a year of school there.. Have no idea where I should live though. Somewhere in Parramatta I guess. It does not look all that far from Sydney.

Posted by gilmista on Mar-21-2004 06:55:

judging by your avatar, you look like a pretty hardcore techno DJ

Posted by muli on Mar-21-2004 07:05:

UWS is alright, but the west sucks, dont live out here :P

i went to TAFE, didnt like it, u don't learn enough. Do a degree or Diploma though a private institute, more expensive but you get a lot more out of it

western sydney is properly more easier to pass subjects
but really you wouldn't be learning much at all!

either go to
UTS
UNSW
USYD

its much harder but you will learn alot more!

parramatta is a good place to live. cost of housing
what i have a problem with is pretentious wanks who generalise
most tas from sydney have met guys like me, sid, matt, joel etc etc and id be confident to say that we arent your typical singlet/stubbie/thong wearin wife bashers
come on do you really think you are better than the next person?
i dont care who you are but from my experience, the easiest people to get along with are those who arent concerned about their mohawk and how pink their shirt is
just cause it is the university of western sydney, doesnt mean that some people from a more "upper" class dont find their way there

ahem sorry....parra is a good place to live cause its pretty central and the cost of accomidation isnt too bad.

in my opinion it is only easier to pass subjects because the load is lighter than other uni's.
entrance uais are reflections of the demand of the course, or how popular the course is, direct correlation to the prestige. what uws doesnt have compared to the more prestigious unis is just that, prestige but when your learning, nursing or computer science at usyd would have the same content as their equivelant at uws

with this in mind it would be better to attempt to get into these unis because theyd have better networking opportunities than uws. you get more workplace experience and help from the faculties whereas with uws your on your own and you have to take the initiative

what do you plan on studying? from that it would be easier to choose a uni cause unis tend to better than another from one subject to another

I was planning on going to finish by business degree. I applied to UWS, the University of Sydney and Canberra. I should hear back from all of them in about a week.

The main reason UWS is at the top of my list is due to the fact it has the best transfer credit program... But it's possible the others will come back with attractive offers, we'll have to see...

Posted by OLi_A on Mar-22-2004 13:25:

places to go for business would have been macquarie and uts
sydney isnt as renowned for their business as they are for the health sciences

good luck mate
