Who's The Better Dj?

Sasha or Zabiela?

Posted by escee on Mar-18-2004 14:32:

zabiela, cant wait for him to pwn perth again.

Posted by Renegade on Mar-18-2004 17:13:

Zabiela wins hands down on both technique and track selection. Sasha's got an exceptional mixing talent and an ability to structure a set that puts most other djs to shame, but get fucked he (or anyone else for that matter) can compete with Zabs three deck mash-ups.

Posted by webmeister on Mar-18-2004 22:30:

Sasha = old guard
Zabiela = new guard

Posted by JulesPLees on Mar-18-2004 23:57:

Sasha is a legend no doubt. The first of the 'supastar DJ's'.

Technically Zabiela is better...

But Sasha is Sasha.

So Im going the third option.

When Sasha was here in adelaide about 18 months ago ( maybe more ) he played thos progressive krap ... it put me to sleep .... I don't actually know who this other person is but I'm going to vote for them because Sasha disappointed me

Dance magic dance
Jump magic jump

hahaha

so cute!

Yeerrrr tough call, Zabiela has maad skillz (we all already know that duh) and plays some sick breaks n house most of the time, but sometimes plays some whack shit. Sasha on the other hand has mad technical skills, solid melodious tunes n myea...would probably say Sasha. But I'll decide later as I'm gonna try n see Zabiela live when he's out here with Slinky

Posted by muli on Mar-19-2004 01:13:

i would go for sasha....

Reason being.

Zabeila is an awesome DJ and some wicked skills and really is amazing. But i feel he is more a DJ to "watch" and not dance to. His sets are not very danceable

Thats just my opinion. I think they are both great, but in a packed out club where i can't see the DJ i would rather sasha

Posted by Sid on Mar-19-2004 01:34:

very tuff! Zabiela's skills are second to none, however Sasha is Sasha! I would have to go Sasha though purely because I prefer his style

Posted by Stu on Mar-19-2004 01:46:

I don't think you can compare them at all

James Zabiela plays tech house & breaks with the skills that could have him compete in DMC competitions.
Sasha plays progressive & breaks which all have a trance edge to them and on his day can program a set better than anyone on the planet.

Personally I am getting sick of Zabiela's track selection. He has access to and plays some awesome tracks but he fills it out with some pretty plain tech house while he does his effect & tricks. He almost seems to be pushing more towards turntablism than a DJ these days and while the tricks are amazing its bordering on over the top IMO.

Sasha has probably been in a bit of a rut the last year or two but from all reports he is quickly approaching his best form again. Just stop listening to every set of his on the internet between now and when he comes out to tour his GU CD and you'll be just as blown away as those that talk about the good old days.

Listening to James Zabiela Live @ Lott 33 Canberra (6-6-03) right now so guess where my vote is going!

Oh and Muli i have to disagree about dance-ability factor - 6 hours without leaving the dancefloor (not even for a piss break) at rennaisance in june says to me hes extremely danceable!

Posted by gumble on Mar-19-2004 05:01:

meh, i dunno.

ill vote later....

Posted by Solstice on Mar-19-2004 07:29:

i dont understand why you post here teknoskaper, every post you make is something bashing trance? why not just stick to some more house/tech based sites?

Posted by Renegade on Mar-19-2004 07:35:

I guess you'll only like Zabiela if you do like the techy-breaky vibe he's got going, but so long as you can even vaguely appreciate it then you should find it pretty danceable. Like lethal, I couldn't leave the dance floor when he was last here on account of the rumbling, bouncing basslines he kept on throwing down. It's not going to be everyone's cup of tea because, yeah, a lot of the stuff he plays borders on druggy, minimal tech-house (Lee Burridge I love you ) but if you know how to "appreciate" that sort of music then you'll find that Zabiela is easily one of the best DJs in the world.

If you'd asked me 12-18 months ago then Sasha may have won on track selection, but a 2003 full of mid-road prog anthems kinda changed my perspective on that. When you've got access to the world's best, new tracks, you've got to do better than dropping Hazy Way, Hoochie Koochie and Cowpander every week.

is trance loving necessarily associated with wild compilation owning? lol

havnt read the replies, but ppl have probably already mentioned such points

sasha moulded the scene.
zabiela is stil relatively the new kid on the block.
sasha plays prog house with melodic tip to prog trance
from sets i've heard zabiela plays, progressy, breaky, techy, housey, bassliney stuff with lots of quirky and bleepy noises.
sasha = great tracklisting/tight mixing
zabiela = turntabilsm technique + effects!

tastes play a great factor but i cant decide.

ask the same question 5 years time when zabiela has matured more and made a greater mark on the scene.

sasha

zabiela's set in sydney was like 500 djs masturbating over the decks
sasha in Canberra was a 1000 people going nuts a dancing like animals!

agree with juggs on this one! Sasha is still the man... he knows the crowd and more importantly knows how a 'drugged' up crowd operates where as zabiela doesn't.

Sasha gets my vote

Sasha bores me to tears........and, he's an arrogant tool to boot (not that that makes a difference to dj skills tho).....Zabiela is just amazing to watch....the music he plays doesn't do that much for me - but he's somebody I admire for technical skills and his ability to just make me stand there open-mouthed for hours....plus, he's so modest about his talents, as opposed to Mr God Complex Sasha......so, Zabiela gets my vote

why does that make sasha a better dj tho?? for all we know, zabiela may not wanna attract a bunch of gurners - so why should he be concerned about learning how they operate??

and of course sasha knows how a drugged up crowd operates....anybody who was at the infamous sasha after-party in canberra knows why....hehehehe if zabiela doesn't wanna go down that path, more power to him i say!!!

Posted by Psygnosis on Mar-20-2004 05:11:

Sasha of course, just because he made Xpander <333

Dj wise, i've seen Sasha a while ago when he was down here.. blew me away, when he came i didn't really like prog much so i dunno why i went to see him but it was well worth it.

Though Zabiela seems wicked too i guess... i dunno.

LOL nice one

Zabiela, Sasha is oldddd. he plays the same shit over and over.

FFS hes still playin Breezer, Beauty Never Fades and At The End (Scumfrog Remix) every bloody set just about. I mean its this cruddy prog/trance that was good at the time but just doesnt hold the test of time.

Zabiela is where its at now!

But Sasha in the day (Anyone remember his set at Homelands 99?? That was brilliant!) was da bomb

My vote for Zabiela . . . . and its all locked up at 10 votes each!
