...or woodchopping....holy shit...that was one tomahawk chop!!

They might even give him more than 5 games in the wake of the Bertuzzi incident. The NHL needs to set an example with all these idiots that think they are above the law just because it's on the ice.

Posted by infinity HiGH on Mar-21-2004 20:14:

WTF?

It was an accident; he lost his balance. You could tell the way he kicks up his left leg and spins around with barely any control. He didn't know the guy was right there.

More like Belfour WTF! He was a complete idiot for taking a penalty while his team is down a man for 5 minutes.

that's no execuse to swing a stick around. if you don't know how to control your stick, maybe hockey isn't the sport for u.

thats the stupidest thing I've heard.

did you actually how he swung around?

when you lose your balance it's hard to control your arms. He swung his arms with his body to regain balance, but unfortunately his stick came across and hit a guy on the helmet. Just like when you're falling forward, you naturally, without thinking put your arms in front of you. Ya it was unfortunate but he didn't even injure the guy so I dunno what the big deal is

pppft whatever Peter... all i know is accidental or not, he deserves what's coming cuz he's stupid. the league doesn't care about loosing ur balance. this is why u go through training camp. the league PA cares about the saftey of the players on the ice. If that means they have to suspend him till next season with fines, it's very understandable.

lets say i come over and "accidentally" pull a triger of a gun and i "accidentally" hit u, would the court look at it as "accidental" and not think of it as "big of a deal"? A stick could be used as a weapon and that's what makes hockey such a conterversial sport. Durring a physical game, u might get frustrated and so on. When u have a stick in ur hand, alotta bad things can happen. Due to the history of the game, i could understand why the league is strict when it comes to injuries envolving sticks. It's for the saftey of the players.

You're comparing apples to oranges.

so a bat breaks in baseball and it clubs somebody, do you suspend the guy?
if you were to have a gun, and it accidentally discharged and you shot somebody you would get penalized, but not like you would if you intentionally shot somebody.

Youre argument doesnt follow. Why not go after the ice maker, maybe he didnt make the ice properly(it could have been rutted)

Posted by torontotrance on Mar-21-2004 22:12:

that was no accident imo, that was purposely done. It was a vicious hit eitherway, the way i look at it, a suspension would benefit the leafs more because all he does is take penalties.

actually, the league does care whether it's accidental or not. Thats why there's a penalty called "intent to injure". I think Bertuzzi got that. And training camp isn't there to make you a perfect, superhuman hockey player. Anyone can lose their balance, and once that happens you have little control over how you swing your arms. Would it be Belaks fault if his feet flew up and his skate hit a player in the face too?

If the league really cared about the safety of the players then it would've already changed the rules on the icing calls; and it would've enforced face masks for players so accidents like what happend to Jeremy Roenick don't happen again.

And you "accidentally" shooting me is completely different from someone getting accidentally hit in the head with a stick, like the Belak incident. You could tell he was off-balance. His team was up 3-0. There was no reason for frustration. And yes, a stick is a potential weapon, but it becomes a weapon only when the player chooses to do so (see: Marty Mcsorley hit on Donald Brashier).

Posted by Rocco on Mar-22-2004 04:21:

good enough. ur suggesting that the league picks on the Leafs. That i agree on. We all know the officiating is usually biased against the leafs.

Posted by Spike on Mar-22-2004 05:16:

wheteher it was intentional or not belak is a piece of shit...totally useless, hes a moron and does more damage to leafs than help....

hope he does get suspeneded or smthn like that

Are you f* kidding!? He was battling with that Av in front of the net and the Av hooked him, and Belak turned around and swung to kill. Belak is not exactly a Lady Byng candidate. It couldnt be any more obvious

8 games. cool...he deserved it.

Maybe there was no specific intent to injure, but that was about as negligent as it gets for stick swinging.

Damn, Messier seems to have gotten off easy with 2...partially because it was him, I'm sure. Yeah, he didn't go for the head, but a stick to the groin isn't much better...and it was clearly no accident.
