Pope Says Sundays For God, Not Sports

Fri Mar 26, 8:37 AM ET

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope John Paul (news - web sites) on Friday said Sunday should be a day for God, not for secular diversions like entertainment and sports.

"When Sunday loses its fundamental meaning and becomes subordinate to a secular concept of 'weekend' dominated by such things as entertainment and sport, people stay locked within a horizon so narrow that they can no longer see the heavens," the pontiff said in a speech to Australian bishops.

John Paul criticized the "culture of the 'here and now,'" urging Church leaders to "lead men and women from the shadows of moral confusion and ambiguous thinking."

The 83-year-old pope also encouraged Christians, especially young people, to remain faithful to Sunday Mass, saying the secular culture was undermining family life.

I think the pope has the nerve, since sports predates Christianity

Well- Friday is for Sports so why your jibberish on Friday?
Save your rantings for Sunday Pope Boy.

So people can sin all week as long as they reserve Sunday for religious purposes.

2 questions I always mixed up get:

Does the pope shit in the woods?
Is the bear Catholic?

With that in mind, please stop watching sports on Sundays. If God says so, pay heed and listen, sinners.

fucking good answer..

i myself.. am not even the slightest bit religious, i dont believe in any form of religion.

forgive me if im talking absolute bollocks.. but.. if your wellinto your religion.. whats the point in sacrificing a 1 day.. sunday.. the true hardcore religious ppl will be constantly praying to and worshipping their god.. whoever he may be.

I don't really care, I'm not a religious person so I'm not bothered what the pope says...

Thumbs down

Hes done some good in helping the cause of peace in regards to some issues, but I lost respect for the man long ago after I learned how high up the scheme of protecting child molesting priests goes in the Vatican hierarchy.

Hey, it's not me who sayeth. It's been sayeth by God's right hand biyatch, da Pope, which pretty much means God hath sayeth it.

So be angry if you will, it is part of God's Will to turn off the NCAA Basketball tournament this Sunday.

And all those Olympic events this summer, well, they're just fine to watch.

Except on Sundays.

I think I'm going to start a nonprofit organization. And since I live here in the Bible Belt, it will probably take off quickly. I think I will title it:

"God Hates Sports on Sundays"

And I think I'll start a website called:

www.godhatessportsonsundays.com

And see how far it gets me.

Thanks Pope. You are inspiring.

Figures what?

That I'm in the middle of a beautiful Bible-thumpin God-fearin' land?

I'm sorry I choose NOT to be out there with all you California heathens, but feel the confines of my church-land oh so much more comforting.

And please, listen to our Pope. He and God have a very good relationship. They email each other all the time, so I know God tells us to stop watching and playing sports on Sundays if the Pope says so.

Stop fighting the Truth.

Well- Thanks for making my point-
Why would you fear God?

This heathen will probably be committing at least 3-4 sins tonight.

to each their own, but i guess Mr. Pope John Paul should probably understand that if he says things like this in such a manner many people may be offended...

on the other hand, before we blindly criticize something we don't understand maybe we should think a bit more before we post a flaming reply...

this is also the same man who said breakdancers (the good ones) have a "god-sent" ability hehe kinda cool imo...

Maybe he means his opinions are that of a slightly above intelligent pencil eraser and therefore more Intelligent?
