Warehouse thread

Dont want to pollute the Rank 1 thread, so move it all in here.
all non rank 1 related posts will be removed from the other thread on Sunday...so copy/paste cuz I cant move individual posts.

Pros:
1. The size (you get really close to the DJ)
2. Cheap alcohol
3. Good location (can easily park for free nearby)
4. Sound is OK (keep in mind the room size)

Cons:
1. Alful entrance (takes you an hour to go in)
2. Poor ventilation (1 hour of dancing and the oxygen ratio in the air drops down to probably 30%, then you go out to catch a breath of fresh air and you have to wait another hour to go back in)
3. Poor hygene (pardon me, but the place is dirty)
4. Decoration (you all know what I am talking about)
5. Lighting and effects (it is really dark and the light effects are more suitable for a kareoke bar)
6. Architecture (I nearlly killed myself few times, tripping at the single step to the elevated floor infront of the DJ booth)

quoted this from rank 1 thread
1.agree
2.agree
3.agree
4.sound is as good if not better than any club in the city, plus they just added 2 more bassbins, whiskey is also very good for sound

1.entrance sucks ass
2.ventilation isnt good but any dj show ive been to at the whiskey has been the same thing at digweed a few years ago the ceiling was dripping with sweat
3.how exactly is it dirty? I know the bathrooms arent fancy but they're not that dirty
4.who cares?
5.where else in the city has an amazing light show? the lights at the warehouse are pretty standard not to mention they always bring in a lazer for big djs, which no other clubs do
6.thats your fault every bar in the city has steps watch where you are walking

some other positives I'd like to mention, when do you ever see a big dj for cheap on a friday in calgary other than at the warehouse? NEVER, dom and chris have done an amazing job bringing awesome djs in and have the warehouse booked all through july so people that are complaining are either gonna have to suck it up or miss a bunch of great shows and just go to the odd sunday or wednesday show at the whiskey(which are horrible for people that work or go to school)

Thats all I have to say, except that the warehouse is one of the only things keeping calgary scene strong so better learn to appreciate it or we'll end up like edmonton

just to refute you..Metro had a pretty good lighting rig. But thats about it.

had, being the keyword

Posted by j_spot on Mar-27-2004 18:20:

heres a question Ive wondered

What dont you like about the entrance?
Is it the pat downs for drugs and weapons?
The lining up inside, as opposed to outside?
The ID info taking?--This one baffles me as well, but hey Id rahter have it on paper, than that ID scanning thing.
or the lining up off the alley.

The rest of the arguments dont bug me and I think they are part of its charm. The warehouse atmoshpere is the minimal underground club. It does that very well. I think that is the clientel that they attract, and the client that they are going for as well. I mean you are complaining about decoration.
Tell me what club in calgary really has decorations. Sure, some places (ie palace) have decor that come with the building, but that hardly counts. The industrial fans (if only they didnt rattle) are the coolest looking thing around.

Bathrooms in clubs are always nasty. Not specific to the warehouse.
The step could go...I admit to that. Its an annoyance, but at the same time, I like dancing on it.

heres my list

Pros
Lineup(DJ)
sound
drink prices
refill your water
hours that its open
parking/location
general atmosphere of the room
friendly staff (to me at least, I <3 tamara)
re entry
tonnes of seating
admission is always cheap!!!

Cons
line to get in can be long, but having membership makes it go faster.
they have to stop serving booze @ 2.

Ive been reading through this thread for and have to agree with most of the comments.

Pros: Parking, Closeness to DJ's, Cheap beer. I like the step ( i spent the whole night there last time. Floor is nice.
Cons: Dirty, Entrance wait. Shitty lighting,

Overall its not too bad and i dont mind being there if they dj is putting on a wicked show.

Btw Jay. When are you coming back to calgary? I talked to Will at Joey tomatos and im excited to see him at an event one of these days. Hes still Joey Tomato proud!

If the Warehouse is what's keeping the scene alive then I must say that it has to be on life support.

See, the thing is that no matter how much we bitch about the Warehouse we are still stuck with it and the only thing we can do about it is hope that the owner knows how we feel. I see that many of you like the underground atmosphere of the place and I agree that it has its charm, but I certainly don't think that it is suitable for hosting big DJs. I always have fun when I go there, but I will have even more fun if the place was good.

And j_spot, regarding the entrance, hmm where do I start, its tiny, cramped, ugly, one bouncer only, gets alfully cold in the winter because there is no foyer and the lineup moves with the speed of a 80 year old snail.

Posted by TrancEuphoria on Mar-27-2004 23:18:

I do like the underground feeling of the warehouse, but other than that I don't much like it. Of course poeple there are going to be more into the music than at the whiskey because why would the warehouse attract for any other reason other than the music. I think that having events at bigger clubs ie the Whiskey helps to legitimize, hmmm maybe not the right word, but helps to bring it a little more main stream(hence the bar stars). I just like to see good DJ's at good clubs, I think it adds to the expereince. I went to the Whiskey last night for a bit and the renovation up stairs turning it into a lounge and creating an actual dj area(not so much booth), should be good next time a dj comes there. Despite all my bitching I appreciate the Warehouse, I had some of the best nights there, and where else would dj's play?

Posted by j_spot on Mar-27-2004 23:39:

heres one thing you may or may not know.
The warehouse is 20 years old. One of the oldest clubs in Canada(for real) Anyways...
In Calgary they are the only liquor service then shut it down bar. Thats because of the city. There was new code written a while back, and it was grandfathered into it. (The Taz was as well, but they shut down, and lost priveleges) So they are the only club that can serve and stay open past 3. If they close down, then we have no afterhours clubs at all. Well we could have some like Aux and Shadow(which started out afterhours only, serving juice and pop) but we all know how well those went.

I think the entrance is nicer than most clubs that you ahve to line up at...I mean, you are inside, not under the snow rain etc..but anyways...
They redid the back(downstairs) entrance in the fall.
the Front(alley) entrance was remade, but its still narrow. I think theres something in the plans, but not sure.
Would you rather that they force us to wait outside like all the other clubs?

I cant really speak about the line, because I rarely wait in it. I come early, and have a membership(which will be on sale @ Rank 1 I think) pay $15 for rank 1, get a membership good for a year, and it speeds up the door alot!!!

how the hell can you can say its on life support? Have you seen the events going through the warehouse the past year or so? For talent theres not many place better in Canada other than maybe aria and the guverment

Well, you said that the Warehouse is the only thing keeping the scene alive in Calgary, hence it must be on life support.

On the other hand, I believe that it's the promoters and the people like me and you and the so called Barstars who buy tickets and thus make it possible for good DJs to come here. So please do not try to glorify the club because it deffinitely is not reason for the recent invasion of good DJs.

Posted by j_spot on Mar-28-2004 17:51:

one off events for big djs only does not make a scene.
and it is the reason for the DJs
take the warehouse out of the equation, and there is tues, wed and sun nights left for us.

I think the warehouse is the lifeline of calgarys scene. without it, there is a big void, and nobody can fill it.
were lucky to have it. An afterhours club is key to all things in this life. every city that has a scene, has afterhours. No afterhours=no scene.
van doesnt really have afterhours, but they have extended hours, thats close enuf.

Im not gonna try to convert you guys, cuz as long as you hate it, theres still enuf room for me to dance, which is more than you can say about any venue in TO.

warehouse is hosting alot of crazy names in the next couple months... its gonna be rockin there reguardless if u like it there or not...

Posted by Dmatrox on Mar-28-2004 19:50:

eh BSD is there?

i guess they choose to put events there is cause its cheaper to rent out than other places, so you shouldnt have to pay very much to get in.

Posted by <tuss> on Mar-28-2004 21:32:

what i think of the warehouse, this is just my perspective here, i dont ever get excited to go to a party there, because really, parties there are'nt exciting, they're fun, but not exciting, scot project was exciting, but thats it. i think this because the place needs alot of work to make it feel right, to me it feels like somebodys garage, plus most of the people there are in their own little world, like at a house party.
they are doin it up nicely with their dj bookings though, there seems to be a constant flow of good music going through there now every month. this place could esily be the best club in town if it got some serious renovations, and i mean the type to make it look NICE kinda like the way the embassy got turned into MYNT, i know it's expensive and all, but the warehouse has the reputation of a 'dirty' club, and it is imo. they need to make it feel new and fresh, give it some vibe, new lights, layout, it feels old and boring. but they have that license where they can stay open all night, so fuckin use it i say. i'd go there alot more but i dont feel comfortable in there for very long unless im snapped, and even then it's hard.

Posted by dartrance on Mar-28-2004 22:12:

^ exactly my feelings of the club along with plenty of others

They got some good names coming in though!!!

honestly i couldnt agree with you more, but its hard to resist when they bring in good names. "dirty"
