Is this a 90's thing?

Now...listen to the crowd in these short clips of a set from 1995. I have a few questions about that noise they're making. I can also hear people doing this in a Carl Cox set from '96.

Clips - Here & Here

1. Does it have a name?
2. Do people still do it?
3. Why does it make me laugh every time I hear it?

the crowd noise is the beat from the song

mmh i dunno if people are still doing it ....but here sometimes it can happen but just a few times to make some fun ....that's all

I cant be bothered to download the clips, but if it what I suspect a sort of ooooowa ooooowa chant, then they were doing that way before the 90s, thankfully it seems to have died...for now.

Posted by Tranc3 on Mar-29-2004 21:32:

Ahaha I remember that chant, it was so cheesy then and even more so now that it doesn't have mass appeal.

Posted by Radagast on Mar-29-2004 21:33:

They only did it but once or twice the whole set.

And I was just wondering, since I never started really even listening to music until 2000.

started with hip hop back in the early early 90's and late 80's..must have been transferred over...

tbh i think the hip hop variation was just a tad different.. yeah a lot of people did do the woop woop thang a few years back.. and itd just start with one dumbass guy proly smashed out his face [good lad] on a breakdown or some other noticably significant part of a set.. then the crowd would follow suit.. i guess its sorta a more musical friendly version of screaming your head off in awe or appreciation for what it is your hearing.. i mean wailing over the top of a breakdown although does sound untiting and completely atmospheric.. but it kinda cancels out the sound you should be hearing/enjoying.. the woop woop [as im sure you noticed] is to the beat so dosnt really ruin anything.. atmosphere is still without a doubt most definatly there, but overall i guess this is just a more in sync way of tell the DJ 'what im hearing right now is fucking safe, and i just wanted to let you know that without ruining this sound that your presenting me with.. even tho the fat guy at the front with his shirt off hugging random people did it first'.

It's a disco call, from the days of disco...way before the 90's.

yeah...i remember this to be used in cunjuction with a "raise the roof" hand jesture in order to show your level of coolness...

It's a sound produced by idiots who think they are enhancing the musical experience of others by making it. If course if they were doing it in time to the music it might help.

Posted by DannyO on Mar-30-2004 06:30:

hahahahahaaaaa, oh man thats classic, I used to be one of those assholes that used to do it when clubbing, but that was back then I was like 13 to 14, I've grown up abit since then.

Posted by Spin Doctor on Mar-31-2004 01:10:

It can get annoying, but not more so than someone going PEEP peep PEEP, PEEP peep PEEP, PE-Pe PE-Peep P-P P-PEEP on a whistle over and overand over and over all set long right next to your ear.

Posted by Spin Doctor on Mar-31-2004 01:12:

Side note: we used to do it at school when the teacher left the room. Once the teacher had gone for ages and wed worked up to quite a volume, when all of a sudden the head teacher walked in...eek!

It's called cheering...

Posted by MrSquirrel on Mar-31-2004 23:54:

It is not entirely dead....heard a bunch of idiots doing it at a show here not too long ago.
