DVD-R vs. DVD+R? What's the differences in formats?

I recently got a DVD burner that burns both types of DVD formats and plan to burn DVD's for 2 things:

1. to back up all my data cd's so i can throw them away and have much less spots taken up in my cd case.
2. copy some of the dvd's i own to watch in my RCA DVD Player or X-Box.

I know that different brands support different types of DVD's but what are the technical differences between DVD-R and DVD+R?

and Memorex makes "DVD+R Video" discs that cost time and a half what regular DVD+R discs do, why are these so much more? And what are DVD-RAM discs?

which discs should i buy? i was thinking of getting DVD-R discs for data and video cuz i hear they're like 10% more compatible with most DVD Players than +R discs.

they were developed by different companies, one is from sony, other from ..blaa.. most dvd players support both now anyway

i beleave ps2 does not play's +r

and dvd ram is rarely used, its like a huge floppy drive thingy, square plastic cover with an 'regular' dvd inside, format never really worked out

DVD-R are the Discs used for dvd players, console systems etcc..the + discs are for PC data etc....i like using +..dont know why

The DVD-R format is the most compatible with consumer DVD players. I believe both DVD-R and DVD+R are equally recognized by DVD-ROM drives.

I am pretty sure that Tom's Hardware Guide will have an explanation tha tis more in depth.
