Instead of buying hardware....

So I've been considering buying a module or rackmount synth, but what if I did this instead:

buy another computer and good soundcard and just have it midi'ed up to my master computer and use this second computer as a super powerfull synth. I could have reason always loaded up or gigasampler or something and use it in conjunction with my regular (sequencing/mixing) computer. Could I setup programs to respond to midi like a hardware device though? Is it a better idea to just upgrade my main computer and stick to one system?

Cubase has a new feature that allows you to sync vst between two computers. I believe its called system-link or something.

After reading some stuff here im thinking about getting hardware like a JP or something to complement my VSTi collection

whilst I agree with the theory behind the idea (having thought about this myself) I think seriously you cannot beat the sound of dedicated audio hardware (synths etc). A PC will always be personal computer first, audio instrument second regardless of the spec.

Hmm .. so does this mean you could have a Mac running Logic synced to a PC running VST

if your loving the softsynth sound then hey go for it...SX has some gnarly functions..like V-Stack that can rack up maybe 8(or more?) VSTi's on a host computer.

nearly all soft-synths but z3ta+ and sample based ones suck :P

yay for sampling.. but the FX take up SO MUCH CPU

Holy crap that's awesome, I mean I've read a lot about distributed computing, but I've never thought about it in this fashion.

curious... can you route VST processing to these or are they just for the (literally) hardware quality FX that come with them?

I'm fairly certain they only work with their proprietary FX.
