Time For A New Video Card......
Any suggestions & prices?
Runing under an athlon 1 gig.
JaY
of course everyone wants a 9800.
i'm settling for a ATI Raedeon 9600XT @ $179
radeon 9700 or above
Those cards are overkill if he's running a 1GHz Athlon imo. Personally I'm running a 1.2 GHz Athlon with a GeForce 4 Ti4200 and they are well matched for most games. I'm not sure if you can still get the Ti4200 or what price they're running at but you might want to look at the GeForce FX5200 or FX5600. For ATI you could try the 9200 or 9600 but make sure to check the benchmarks for the games you want to play. Tomshardware.com did a roundup of cards running on a 1 GHz machine not too long ago. Here's the link: http://www.tomshardware.com/graphic/20030120/index.html
hey zapo, thanx for that link. tomshardware looks like an awesome site, can't believe i never seen it before
tomshardware is usually very biased. go anandtech.com instead
Tom's has been a joke for well over a year, now. The reviews there are borderline comedy.
Anyway, go for a 9700 Pro. Period. They're cheap nowadays at around $200, and they get the job done like none other for the price. It's what I run, and it owns.
go w/ a 9700 or 9800pro. The only bad thing, your cpu and mobo will limit the performance gain that you may see. Try to upgrade mobo/cpu/ram as well.
I run a 9800 on a 2.6 ghz with 768mb ram and I can play most games at the highest video settings.
Werd. The radeon 9700 or 9800 sounds like a deal. Thanks guys.
I do plan to upgrade to a 2 + gig in the future, as well as ram..
Anymore suggestions let me know.
Btw how's the Geforce FX?
JaY
You might want to wait till after around April 26, when the ATI X800 comes out. It might (probably not, but might) bump down the price of the older Raddys down a bit further.
it very well may drop the price down. However it's a great time to buy a 9800pro b/c since the xt's release the price droped quite alot.
You should totally look to spend the $$$ on a new mobo and cpu first. you may not see a big improvement in a video upgrade if your cpu, ram, and mobo are whats killing performance.

A friend of mine has the Hercules Radeon 9800 Pro, awesome card.
Im probably going to buy a 9800 Pro in a couple months or so speaking of new cards..
You might be processor limited at many resolutions because of that... I'd suggest something midrange... GeForce 5900 XT would be a great value, you can get one for right about $200 I think? Radeon 9700 Pro if you can still find one or if you can find one for cheap a Radeon 9500 Pro. I'd stay away from the Radeon 9600 or GeForce FX 5700 series (unless you can find them for dirt cheap, even then a 9600 XT or 5700 Ultra only, the 9800 is better than the 5700).
Hold on for just a bit...
Get the R420 when it comes out, the 9800XT can generally hold its own against the NV40, albeit with either 1 notch down in resolution or less AA, but that's it.
