video games --> movies

what game do you think would make an awesome movie? not an awesome movie based on a game, but just an awesome movie in general...

i say the obvious choice is Metal Gear Solid. i think if someone was to make a movie based solely on the original mgs, it would rock so hard

Posted by djSlain on Apr-04-2004 18:13:

Metal Gear, DEFINENTLY. Just as long as Kojima is in production.
Silent Hill is up there too.
the original Deus Ex had a really neat cinematic plot.
Square Pictures is dead meat, but it'd be neat to have a Final Fantasy with the RPG elements like magic and materia, etc etc etc

Max Payne, perfect Film Noir story.

D00m of course, think warner brothers have the rights actully

Movies of video games are a bad idea full stop. It completely spoils the whole feel of a game as it forces you to take away from it what the director wants you to, rather than enabling you to decide for yourself.

Oh, and they have been talking about having a Doom film since Doom II was released!

MGS movie? it exists, look up James Bond.

not even close. the only thing the two have in common is the 'spy' feel.

but i definitely agree on deus ex. perfect cyberpunk movie.

also, you're right again about final fantasy. after seeing lord of the rings, i was disappointed there wasnt much magic. i want to see a movie like that with massive amounts of magic. maybe king arthur will have some... merlin mofo's!

I'd like to see a movie based on the old Ninja Gaiden games... Metal Gear would be another good choice. Devil May Cry might be cool, too...

Posted by TeKnoHe@d2025 on Apr-06-2004 02:35:

They're making a movie based on the Dead or Alive series...I'll say no more.

Posted by Aldrian on Apr-06-2004 04:36:

actually

actually there is a silent hill movie in the works. it's going to be good i think cause the director is the same director as that awesome Brotherhood of the Wolf movie. don't know why people didn't really see that movie as being good. i think it is one of the bset. also i like luc besson directing but christopher gans is going to be the one to do the movie.

dmc is also going to be a movie. very similar to blade. i heard guillermo del toro the director of blade 2 which is still on of my fav movies of all time is going to do dmc.

metal gear movie is probably my number one movie i hope they make soon. but there is so few directors that i want to let them get a hold of. for one my first choice is Michael Bay and Jerry Bruckheimer, if not then it would be Ridley Scott. but i trust Bay and Bruckheimer to do metal gear. they are metal gear and their cineamtic style is Metal Gear.

i still think mr. Van Helsing himself Hugh Jackman should be snake.

max payne movie will be a good one as well. people want George Clooney do to it. maybe guy pearce but he looks like a monkey to me. i don't know who would make a goodmaxpayne.

Book? Tom Clancy has enough books and games, we're talking video games made into movies here.

It's incredibly difficult to squeeze in a whole game into a 2.5 hour movie without butchering it into something obscene. Just look at Tomb Raider.

I've come to appreciate good games as an unbeatable storytelling medium. Especially RPG's. Movies are nice because you can see and hear the characters, environments, and situations they face. It's usually much more powerful and effective to see a scene acted out in full detail in front of your own eyes than to imagine it from words in a book. However, movies are bound into that < 3 hour limit. Anything more requires multiple chapters taking years to make and usually many millions of dollars. Even then, anything longer than a trilogy is usually unheard of and you can still only tell so much.

Books don't have this problem. A book is free from time restraints and budgets, and can delve into lots of deep dialogue, character development, plot, etc. Their stories can often span many years and situations. But obviously they lack the visualization of the movie.

But great games, like Halo or a good RPG, aren't troubled by this. Not only do they have the visualization and sound, they are free to expand without having to worry about keeping things within the 3 hour mark. Plus, the fact that you're actually controlling the characters through their struggles really kicks the immersion and fun up a notch. I finally got around to buying Xenogears on tuesday, and already I've put like 13 hours of gametime into it, and I'm not even that far. By now it would probably have taken 2-4 full length movies to tell the story as effectively and throughly as the game has. So I've got all the long, complex stories and dialogues of a book, the sights and sounds of a good movie, plus the added bonus of being the one controlling the characters. As much as I love a good book or movie, I love a good RPG 10x more .

Posted by Shamez214 on Apr-08-2004 14:13:

yes, but if they can cut down books and still tell the story effectively, then they can do the same with a game like mgs which is really only a 6 hour story. a lot of that can be cut down. same thing with the res evil's and silent hill games. my one true wish is for someone to make a resident evil movie based DIRECTLY on the first one. chris, barry, jill, wesker... now THAT would effin' own!

Posted by StealthAssassin on Apr-08-2004 19:55:

Good point nrjizer, it is hard to make a decent movie with that 3 hr time limit. especially for an rpg which can be 70 - 100 hours of gameplay. btw xenogears kicks ass, your in for quite a ride.

About a MGS movie that would be awesome but someone mentioned a few directors to film it bay and bruckheimer would ruin it, they'd want too much action and not enough stealth. Another one that came to my mind was tim burton but theres a possibilty that hed put a giant spyder in it. as for who should direct it im not sure, but it has to be someone willing to put the time and effort in to it to make it great, someone like Kojima

I can't remember of any good movies made from video games, so I say none

wtf? are you kidding me? did you ever see super mario bros? or street fighter!?

Posted by StealthAssassin on Apr-09-2004 04:48:

BTW Scarlett Johannson would make a perfect Meryl...she already has experience walking around in her underwear and she looks hot doing it. as for snake either hugh jackman or viggo mortasen would be good.
